If you can be a branch, that would be great of course! If you don't know Patty's work yet- you still absolutely should get her 2 CDs, but I am forwarding this offer to you since it is sort of an emergency with the concert coming up and all. I want you to really get into her so that you have a great time that day. Dana _____________ I've gotten tons of requests for the Ark show discs and I'm sorry I haven't responded to you all personally yet. I won't have the MD's onto cd's for a few more days as I left my computer with the good soundcard up at the lake house. So here's the deal... everyone interested in getting this show through a B&P (Blanks and postage), please email me with exactly: Ark show cd-r in the subject (so if you hit reply to this it will work... just make sure you send it to me jcaputo@umich.edu and not to the list). I'm gonna try not to do trades for this show cause I'm way behind on trading so B&Ping is preferred this time around. I don't know what kind of reply to expect so if you have a burner - maybe mention if you'd be willing to copy it for a few others. If you already emailed me then I will try to move your message to the right folder but you might wanna write again just to be sure I didn't miss it somehow - from now on, my filter will catch the emails with the correct subject. Many don't know Patty or Steve Earle and wish they knew the artists who will be playing that day since it is such a big effort to fly across the country to Arizona etc. Here is just one of my crazed posts to them, encouraging them to venture out to new waters and get into Patty. That is why I let them know about the CD tree- I hope they love Patty by Oct! Dana - ----------------------------- For those who are unsure of enjoying Patty Griffin in concert- here is a post from the Mad Mission list about Friday Eve's concert in Ann Arbor, Michigan. There are 5 new songs that I have not heard in concert before- altho I have them on Cds from concerts in Annapolis and Charlottesville 3 weeks ago! I found Patty due to Jackson, you know- someone had posted an interview in which he had been asked which new singers he liked and he said he was so impressed with Patty Griffin who I had never heard of. I saw her tape -Living With Ghosts- in a record store and remembered the name and decided to try it- I was mostly interested in seeing what kind of singer Jackson would be so interested in. I put the tape in the tape deck in my car and as I heard the first line of Moses- I said: "I am going to like this girl!" By the time I got thru the tape once and heard Not Alone, I was hooked- I sat in the dark in the car at midnite after work and listened to it over and over- could not go into the house. That was almost 5 yrs ago- Nov of 96. I have seen her about 20 times maybe since then, twice in Sedona, also Santa Rosa and San Francisco but mostly in New England. It is not easy background listening- her lyrics are very intense- she writes songs about aspects of people's lives that are not ususally expressed. She nails it- every word is essential to the song. I spent 18 years married to an alcoholic, trying to raise 5 kids and working all the time- Sweet Lorraine is so on target for what that life is like- I felt like she was singing about one of our girls in particular. {I would hope to except myself from the lines about the mother in that song please.} I first heard Mary solo acoustic in Boston. Then when I got the Flaming Red tape, June 26, '98- the day that tape was released- I listened to that tape for the first time that night on a night drive from New Haven to Charlotte with a car full of kids- after they finally fell asleep and I could put it in the tape deck and just concentrate on the new songs as I drove. I had to put Mary on repeat a dozen times. Tears. It brought back my grandmother's death years before and even the loss of my mother, who altho still alive, had a devastating stroke and is just not the same. My real mother is gone. It is like Patty can identify with someone 2 generations away on an even level- see her grandmother as a person- not just an old woman ready to die. Since those going will have the chance to hear her live, I hope you will get both her Cds and become familiar with her style and very unique and beautiful voice, and at least the recorded songs so that you can really appreciate her. She does not tour that much, especially on the west coast, so you have a rare chance to see her. Dana in Berkeley- still raving about Patty playing again in Sedona! _______________________________ << Hi everyone :), This is my first attempt at a post. I hope it works. I saw Patty for the first time at The Ark in Ann Arbor on Friday. She was amazing! Her voice seems to just flow from her. But I'm preaching to the choir here. Anyway... Patty had on a shimmery grey top and a black skirt. The skirt looked like maybe a fan handpainted it for her. It had a painted Mary near the bottom and I think there were roses surrounding her. Black boots topped (bottomed?) the outfit. Patty played two acoustics, a Gibson and I'm not sure of the other one. Doug played an electric Fender, a mandolin and I think a dobro too. Here's the set list: 1 Carry Me 2 Poor Man's House 3 Perfect White Girls 4 Mad Mission 5 Change 6 Florida 7 Rain - Patty said it will be on her next album, hopefully out next year entitled 1,000 Kisses 8 Chief 9 Falling Down (unsure of title here) 10 Flaming Red 11 Bend Me or Be Careful With Me (again, unsure of title) 12 Goodbye 13 Top of the World 14 Mary Encore 15 Sweet Lorraine 16 Tomorrow Night 17 10 Million Miles - Patty said this song was for all of us :). All the songs were great. The one that really stood out for me was the bluesy, sexy version of Flaming Red. Made me want to get my acoustic and just SANG (that's sing for all the stellar spellers out there)! I also cried during Goodbye. Having lost someone I loved dearly a few years ago, those lyrics really touch me. What struck me most about Patty is how sweet and shy she is onstage. She thanked us after every song. She thanked us for hanging in there even without any new music to be had. She broke a string and Doug took her guitar backstage to string it up. She joked that she had one of the best guitarists in Nashville and she had him doubling as a guitar tech. She also teased Doug a bit. Then she mentioned that she came from a family of 7 children and the girls were always torturing the brothers. She told us that's all men really want is to be tortured. Patty talked to some members of the audience. A man shouted out that he wanted to bear her children. She said something to the effect that thanks to George W. that just may be possible with cloning. Then she said, "But I never get involved with politics." After seeing Patty live, I'm left feeling even hungrier for more of her music. Here's hoping that 1,000 Kisses will be available soon! So that's my first ever review. I hope it was worth a read. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Aug 2001 22:33:02 +0100 (BST) From: "=?iso-8859-1?q?Ma'eee?=" Subject: MM: Silver bell/top40arseburgercrap etc The reason major label do not wan't to release albums like silver bell is that they are too good; they will show up all of the low cost/fast buck/quick return shite for what it really is. It would remind the general public what proper, original music is and therefore damage future sales of Britney/Nsync/Sisq/Mariah Carey. If peole are fed crap and repeatedly told: This very good, buy more and you will stay young, beautiful, trendy and popular and denied any other message then they will learn to accept crap as the pinnacle of musical endeavour. She's really an amazing talent...mother of 3 young boys, and she just had another child, hence the 'not travelling out of her home area.' She's supposed to venture into NY, and I'm told maybe to the DC area sometime in 2002...I hope so. Most of her songs are acoustic guitar and her fragile voice. There aren't too many sound bites on www.lorimckenna.com , but there are a few. Enough to get you even more hooked, I suspect. Sorry I wasn't too precise in describing her sound...=).
