Don't know how it got past me , but when I mentioned Patty's duet on "Let him Fly" , of course , it was Natalie Maines , not Emily , duh ! Thanks to Dave , & all others who reviewed the shows even though he em-bare-assed me with his praise. In my defense , I'm retired & have nothing better to do. The more points of view , the better , so that those who couldn't attend can get a better overall sense of the shows. There were 15-20 people already there when we arrived , including Becca (scubagrrl) & her friend Sheila. Gretchen was also there. Gretchen said that she may be writing a review for a music mag called Snap! Pop! (no crackle!). Hope to see it soon. Gretchen was with other friends this time , & was up closer , so we sat with Becca & Sheila about 15 feet from center stage. Set list; Carry Me Truth # 2 Poor Man's House Perfect White Girls Mad Mission Change Florida Be Careful Flaming Red Chief Rain Stolen Car Top of the World Mary Encore Sweet Lorraine Tomorrow Night Ten Million Miles I think we were right in front of Doug's main speaker , b/c the volume level of the guitar on "Carry Me" was eclipsing Patty's voice again. It didn't seem to be as much of a problem on the other songs.Throughout the 5 shows , "Carry Me" , & "Change" were the ones that I thought could benefit most from lower guitar volume , & less melody during Patty's vocals. Also , the end of "Top of the World". I recall saying that the accordion at her Austin show "destroyed" the ending. I hadn't mentioned it up to now , but I was very disappointed that she didn't go back to the "kiss their asses" line in "Perfect White Girls". I think it's the heart of the song , & assumed that it was taken out to appease the powers that be at Interscope , to make it more "radio friendly". Frankly , I think would be more radio friendly with the line in. It's a very mild epithet compared to what's in some music these days , & the song flows much better with it. Most of the rest of the notes I made have been covered by others , so I'm almost done. (did I hear a cheer ?). The "Flaming Red" opening may have been the best of the tour with both Patty's voice & Doug's guitar doing that slow , soulful thing that makes the bluesy opening version definitely superior to the album version. Another great version of "Rain" with Doug's guitar adding greatly to the song , but being just a tad intrusive during some of Patty's vocals. What a great song "Stolen Car" is! Thank you Bruce , Patty & Doug for that. There's no song that Doug's guitar is more welcome on. Those low , long notes with the plaintive sound takes the mood of that song even deeper. One of my favorites , & they did it every night. Which reminds me. (here we go again) I just got a cell phone last week , so I'm new at it. At Starr Hill , I didn't remember to turn it off until Patty was into her third song. Of course , I didn't remember to leave it in the car either. Later in the show someone's phone rang in the rear. Not very loud , but I heard the word "tacky" out of Patty. My ringer was on loud , I don't know how to adjust it , & I was 5 feet from Patty. All I could think of , is what if mine went off during "Stolen Car" ! I would have had to crawl under the seats & slither out on my belly , never to darken Patty's door again. If God ever wanted to put His fear in me , all He has to do is give me that nightmare. "Top of the World" is one of my favorites also. But , the less music the better. Even Patty's playing seems like more than necessary. I'd love to hear Patty sing it a cappella one time. One of our listers, Nancy Micciulla , does the classic "Smile" that way , & it's one of my favorites by her. It takes a great voice , & a lot of confidence to pull it off , & I'm sure that Patty would be up to it. Another great version of "Mary". I'm glad that Patty's got a voice that I never get tired of. It's a rare day when she doesn't do "Mary" I'm afraid that Patty got a few boos when she came out for the encore. She said , "we'll make this snappy so you guys can all go home". The reaction was predictable. It was after "Tomorrow Night" that she got the long applause that Dave mentioned. Even though it was obvious that she was playing another song , they kept going as though they were calling for an encore. I never see as delighted a look on Patty's face , as when she gets a bigger response than she expects. She again had trouble remembering the last phrases of "Ten Million Miles" b/c of losing her lyrics sheet. (It wasn't me Patty !) I'm still wondering why she didn't make a new one. The opening act was Julie Sanderson. Again , I liked her music initially , but a sameness set in after a while. After the show we volunteered to take Becca & Sheila back to their hotel , & managed to get lost. At one point we followed a sign for Fort Myers , & found ourselves at a guard shack , with two severe looking soldiers wearing berets. When I said we were lost , one said "yeah , we never heard that one before". In spite of their obvious displeasure , we got directions from them , & all was well. A Patty quote that reminds me of Dylan's "Not Dark Yet". Now where the hell are my notes for Rams Head ? The darkness is falling so fast Somehow I thought That the day would always last I'm afraid that I walk alone In life Following the sound of your voice By the light. She played MAIN Street in Carrboro AND in Charlottesville. She didn't make Main Street in Alexandria & Annapolis , but to paraphrase Meat Loaf , 2 out of 4 ain't bad. Hope y'all (picked that up in the South) have the stomach to keep putting up with me 'til I get it all out of my system. One thing I forgot to mention was that Patty also got nervous about saying the right city at Starr Hill. She mentioned Charlottesville , & then said , "it is Charlottesville isn't it ? , not Charlotte ? ". I've heard stories about acts that indulge in mind- altering substances to the degree that they have to be told what city they're in immediately before going on stage , & then still screw it up. Set list : (force of habit) I have to talk about Doug here. Any criticisms I may have of the music does not reflect on Doug I don't have the credentials to criticize musical ability. I'm just one of those non-sophisticates who knows what he likes & doesn't like. If he's Patty's favorite guitar player in the whole world , that's good enough for me. And , as I said , as they continue to play together , he complements Patty's voice more than he competes with it. His melodies and playing on "Chief" & "Truth # 2" are excellent , & I anticipate him contributing more & more as their chemistry grows. In general , Patty is still on top of her game. I get the impression that my criticisms outweighed my positive comments , and that's b/c , as I said earlier , I tend to take Patty's greatness for granted after hearing her & seeing her perform for so long. To revisit a phrase I used earlier , Patty's music is in full flower , yet amazingly , still blooming. From the earliest music I've heard to "Ten Million Miles" Patty's creativity & performance levels should make the current "big names" in music as green as a pine forest. If I didn't know Patty's music , & heard "Rain" , "Florida" , & "Ten Million Miles" , I would run to her next concert. Patty's music has long outrun my ability to describe it with mere words. Thanks to all that have graced me with their kind words.
