LOL - -----Original Message----- From: MistyBC@aol.com [mailto:MistyBC@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, June 07, 2001 10:15 AM To: mad-mission@smoe.org Subject: MM: 6 Degrees Review Hi all. After eating breakfast and getting ready, I realized that I woke up an hour early. Don't you hate that? But it means I have time to post a little review of last night's show. First, a description of this place in is order. It is a trendy, industrial style architecture, make-your-food-look-like-art-on-a-plate type of place. They weeded most of the city's Patty Griffin fans out by making it so expensive to get in. But I'll have to admit I was expecting snotty waitresses and people who came, not to see Patty, but to be at a see-and-be-seen event. Not the case... The staff was super super helpful and courteous and the crowd seemed to love Patty almost as much as I do. :) She came on stage around 9:45, starting off with "We Are Water." Wow. I won't post a setlist because I didn't write one down, I'll leave that to Don and anyone else who was there. But the highlights for me were: 1. My favorite trumpet playing chanteuse on stage with Patty Griffin... When Patty said that the song was about her dream of Marilyn Monroe being reincarnated as a trumpet player, I had this gut feeling that Kami Lyle would show up. Well, that's partly because Julie and I had seen her a few minutes beforehand by the bar holding her trumpet. But that didn't make it any less exciting for me. Two of my all-time favorites on stage together, even though, musically, they have very little in common. It was a bittersweet moment realizing that these two extremely talented women have the support of the music community but somehow lost their record deals. Not fair. But I have faith in both to bounce back and make something even greater out of their experiences. 2. To make number one not sound so depressing, Patty DID mention a new record. She said she was in Nashville recording last month and that the new album title is "A Thousand Kisses." She did not say what label would release it or when it would be released but the main thing is that she's not giving up. 3. A new song called "Rain" that she wrote about 3 months of raining in Austin, TX after a long dry period. Beautiful.... 4. Emmylou harmonizing with Patty on "Mary"... I've heard them sing it together before but it was better last night for some reason. 5. Watching Patty mess up the chords and tunings on a few songs. She was just so cute about it. She said "I'm too old to be this nervous." She seemed to be more comfortable when Doug "I'm going to change his name to Dougie" Lancio was accompanying her. 6. The encore: "Stolen Car", "Top of the World", and "Poor Man's House"... Awesome. All in all, a great night. Thanks to Don for making it interesting and helping two poor college girls out. See you at tonight's show! - -Misty ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Jun 2001 10:19:46 -0400 From: Gary Jacques Subject: MM: Philadelphia WXPN Singer Songwriter weekend. 2001 Lineup SATURDAY, July 21st Joan Baez w/ Dave Carter, Tracy Grammer, and Eliza Carthy Marc Cohn Jeb Loy Nichols Tim Easton The Amber deLaurentis Band Billy Jonas Girls from Mars SUNDAY, July 22nd Nanci Griffith Five For Fighting North Mississippi Allstars Erin McKeown Blackthorn Billy Jonas Ernie & Neal Made possible with support from: <<...>> <<...>> <<...>> <<...>> <<...>> E-mail to a friend Click here to send this page to a friend! http://ssw.xpn.org/ Link for Singer Songwriter weekend in Philly this year. I am not aware of any other times after that she has been here. Believe me, I wish she would come back to Chicago too! The only time I ever heard Patty play that was about 5 years ago when I didn't even know the song yet. I immediately fell in love with it, but since it wasn't on LWG it wasn't until getting a few bootleg recordings that I REALLY fell in love with the song. The past few years I've been waiting to hear her play it live, but no dice. I always request it and she usually give me an answer like "I'm a little rusty on that one.. " or something. Of course, when I'm not there she plays it! I hope since she has starting playing it again (much like One More girl on her last tour), that means it may be on the new CD. That would be OUTSTANDING!!! :-) Whew Hew!! ---(Dave using his imagination to make-believe something so cool would actually happen. I am no where near as obsessed as Don is and had the chance to briefly meet Misty last night. In my year or so of hunting down Patty tunes this has without a doubt become my favorite. I was in shock when she started with it. Safely back in Atlanta and hoping it stays dry for the outdoor show this evening. I think Kasey Chambers is opening for Lucinda this tour (at least I know she in Detroit). I don't know much about her specifically, but have heard nothing but very good things from my alt-country-loving cronies. I'd love a review of this show - I still haven't decided whether to go. I DID see her last time through town, and two things stood out: 1)Patty in fine form as the opener, with an ENCORE as the opener, and 2)Hands down, the rudest crowd at a concert ever. bummer. For Patty content, I think this latest Silver Bell debacle is a crying shame. I hope that someday the record sees the light of day, but more importantly I'm glad to hear she's recording still/again. It's hard to realize how many artists are out there with minimal financial support. As fans, this should spur us on to continue to seek them out, and then spread the word. word. - -Lisa Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! I'm not super-familiar with Jeb Loy Nichols, but I HIGHLY recommend catching Tim Easton. He writes great, great songs, and I love his vocals. "The Truth About Us," his latest, has been in steady rotation for months for me. All in all, this sounds like a great weekend, although I'd take a beer-tent break for Five For Fighting. Saw them open for David Gray - talk about Lowest Common Denominator. I don't know what bothers me more - that Patty gets dropped while bands like this get major studio backing bucks, or that the backing works and these clowns sell tons of records. again, Lisa - --- Gary Jacques wrote: > 2001 Lineup SATURDAY, July 21st Joan Baez w/ Dave > Carter, Tracy Grammer, > and Eliza Carthy Marc Cohn Jeb Loy Nichols Tim > Easton The Amber deLaurentis > Band Billy Jonas Girls from Mars SUNDAY, July 22nd > Nanci Griffith Five For > Fighting North Mississippi Allstars Erin McKeown > Blackthorn Billy Jonas > Ernie & Neal Made possible with support from: > <<...>> > > <<...>> > <<...>> > > <<...>> > > <<...>> > > E-mail to a friend > Click here to send this page to a friend! > > > http://ssw.xpn.org/ > > Link for Singer Songwriter weekend in Philly this > year.
