A few thoughts on this... 1. If copies are being made from one CD to another, there is of course no degradation of quality from source to copy... it's all ones and zeros! 2. I like the MP3 idea, although I'm not sure it would be kosher to let this site be wide open. The tree idea is a more controlled 'distribution' among fans who we know will not use the material for profit. That said, we could put the material online for a limited time period, only share the URL with those on the list and bring the site down once everyone has their copies. It would certainly be far easier that all that burning, packaging, addressing, mailing etc. Unless of course you have a really slow internet connection, in which case it could be painful for you! Also, many people may not have the tools to burn the files to a CD. 3. I don't have a copy of LFML so I don't know what the quality is like, but I do know that any kind of MP3 compression, even at the highest possible quality settings (320kbps), will degrade the sound quality somewhat. That said, the source material may be poor to start with so the extra degradation may not be a significant factor. For those on very fast connections, we could also make an uncompressed version available... but even then the download would probably be too massive... like 10MB per minute of music. 4. If people think the server idea would be a good idea, I could probably host the files. I have a UNIX box, tons of disk space and cable connection which should be fairly speedy... although not lightning fast. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 May 2001 22:36:50 -0400 From: "Steve Capes" Subject: Re: MM: Re: LFML site - idea Dancin' in the District: Patty Griffin, Atticus Fault Where: Riverfront Park 100 First Ave N Nashville, TN When: 6:00 pm-10:00 pm Thursday, Jun. 7 Price: Free I am new to the list, down in Atlanta and can't wait to see her in Nashville. However y'all decide to distribute will be great. I have a burner and a few bucks so I would volunteer a stack of CDR's and the time to the cause.
