Bob, That song you speak of is Wayfaring Stranger. It's a cover song, not one of Patty's originals. I can't believe you brought this up right now.. because I just got in the house from listening to that very song while driving home in my car. I don't want to bitch and moan about a girl problem again, but I was out all night riding around and having a LONG conversation with a girl who I care deeply about.. Of course, god is continuing to torture me by having her tell me she feels more strongly about someone else other than me.. which is the norm for me. Anyway.. after dropping her off I put on Wayfaring Stranger & Patty brought tears to my eyes for the whole ride home. I can't necessarily say that I feel better right now, but it's amazing how the passion in her songs can just bring someone to tears like her voice has done to me on far more than 1 occasion. I need a little help identifying a song. It was the opening song Patty played at the Old Settler's BG Fest, Round Rock, TX 4/10/1999. Some of the lyrics are: Going there, to see my father....No dark clouds will gather round me...Going there, to see my mother... Thanks in advance for any help! Take care, Bob

It's like someone covering "Stairway to Heaven." It's like doing a remake of "Star Wars." Why? That said, I COULD see "Moses" done in a real straight-forward, hard-edged, all-guitars-blazing rock manner. That might be worth covering. She speeds up the tempo and takes more of a rock approach, and I found it very powerful. In fact, I may even like it better than Patty's version, but that may be just because it's fresh in my mind and Ferrick is such a phenomenal live performer. When playing it, Ferrick added a verse where she explained how she called Patty Griffin and asked to put the song on her new album, and how everyone should listen to her because she's great... and a redhead. It was very funny. I haven't heard the album version yet; we'll see how that is. mark dissident@mindspring.com wrote: > << Melissa Ferrick has a new album out called Valentine Heartache > which includes > a cover of "Moses" :)>>> > > No offense to Melissa Ferrick (I've never heard her), but "Moses" is > so perfect on LWG that I can't imagine anyone wanting to cover it, > unless they drastically rework it ala Bette Midler (sorry - I really > hate that version). > > It's like someone covering "Stairway to Heaven." A great version. I would've loved to have heard some harder guitars, but the tempo and nasty attitude was great. This is exactly what I meant when I said: > > That said, I COULD see "Moses" done in a real straight-forward, > > hard-edged, all-guitars-blazing rock manner. That might be worth > > covering. Hmmmm....... She definitely did it in a way that made the song her own, which is what I look for when I listen to cover tunes. Melissa gives Patty credit for the song, and then gives it justice. It rocks! The hallmark of a great song......arranged differently, sung by different artists, and it's always great! Thanks for posting this information. Melissa is playing in LA in June, and I'll be there! Victoria tune and it won me over. A great version. I bought Patty's LWG after (barf) a People Magazine review (hey - I worked in a Dr's office). I had just gone through a divorce (the usual messy difficult kind). Anyway - that album got me through - I played that CD over and over. It was very therapeutic to crank loudly after drinking and sing my heart out. The cd now has a skip or two in it, but I won't buy another one - too sentimental. I still put LWG on whenever I've got a case of the mean reds or a simple case of the blues. I'm curious to know how everyone else got turned on to Patty - and is everyone else as fustrated that her songs are good enough for nearly everyone to cover - but Interscope doesn't find her music worthy to release? Her music can just reach right out and shake your core. Hope to see a few of you in Nashville - Evil Gary perhaps?
