I know you aren't supposed to release decent music anymore but you know, its just an idea. Sarah > Wow. There's a yahoo club of Patty Griffin? > > Cool! I had no idea. Sorry Gary, I have all this useless knowledge and I feel the need to share every once in a while. Either way, it would be great if someone were to do this for Patty. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gary Jacques" To: Sent: Sunday, March 18, 2001 8:21 PM Subject: Re: MM: Silver Bell > Just do it yourself Patty. Anyone with > knowledge of this industry stuff, I'd be curious to > know how that would have to work out. i believe aimee mann's situation has been discussed on this forum. she ran into the same problem... her label wouldn't release her album ("bachelor #2"), but they wouldn't release her from her contract either. then, they agreed to release her from her contract but NOT her album. (remember that the budget for any major-label album is in the many thousands... and the label has already footed the bill, so it will not just 'give' the album away... nevermind that it's the artist's work and all... that's the evil of the record company contract.) finally, aimee got her master tapes back from the label for a "mere" $100,000. only then could she release the album herself. the situation with david gray is completely different... he HAD no label and recorded "white ladder" on his own time and money. when the labels came to him, wanting to release the album, it was more a distribution deal and on his terms... so i suspect he still owns the rights to the master tapes. (unlike aimee, whose older works have just been released without her consent as an "aimee mann ultimate collection" in the ultimate record-biz slap-in-the-face...) so here's how "silver bell" gets released, basically: 1) interscope/A&M/universal/seagrams/etc. gets off its corporate butt and releases the album like it should've done last sept. 2) another label (steve earle's E-Squared, dave's ATO, or maybe a different major) buys out patty's contract as well as the rights to the master tapes of "silver bell" and then releases it. 3) patty gets out of her contract, comes up with enough money to buy her masters from interscope, and then releases it herself. no other way, unfortunately... even if patty gets dropped from the label, she can't even RE-RECORD the "silver bell" tracks for a different company... that's another standard (evil) record company clause. my friends had universal pull the same thing on them in 1996 and their album STILL hasn't been released and they STILL can't sell any albums with any of those 13 songs (that they wrote) on 'em. the good news, kinda... two of my favorite bands, whiskeytown and red house painters, are both about to see albums they recorded in 1998 get official release. (whiskeytown on the brand-new "Lost Highway" singer-songwriter label, RHP on sub pop) both great albums that would've sounded just as great 3 years ago. so it does happen. eventually. [sigh] patty... if you ever read this... and it looks like there's no hope... do what the greats before you did (springsteen and prince, among others)... BOOTLEG YOURSELF. at least the music finds its way to the fans somehow. i can't speak for everyone, but i'll still buy the official "silver bell" no matter how many bootleg copies i have... see ya, rICH Listen to Rich: Check out the official website of Backyard Green, featuring tour dates, lyrics, pictures, and updates on the soon-to-be-released new album: http://www.backyardgreen.com And be sure to check out Rich's solo website at: http://listen.to/rich.com http://www.geocities.com/richardchallen ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Mar 2000 21:06:20 -0800 From: Mike Acerbo Subject: MM: Silver Bell Has anyone stopped for a moment to consider that maybe the album is being delayed because It simply isn't that good? Judging from her last record, and from the continued boring arrangement/ playing on the Silver Bell promo, I'm not surprised that they've sent it back to her. It may end up making the record a better one in the long run. I'd rather wait for a higher quality album, then suffer through another badly produced and arranged one. Patty's talent and songwriting are so incredible they deserve only the best musicians/producers ect. the record company can help her find. I think the delay can only help her in the long run... ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V5 #69 ********************************
