A while back, the list posted many of their favorite female musicians and there were some names I never heard of. Since then, I've checked quite a few out and they are great! Anyway, I'm looking for songs by female singers (can have a male band, I'm not discriminating against males) :) but have a feel of empowerment to them. Some might call them "Angry chick songs" which calls to mind what a lot of people said about Alanis' You Oughtta Know. Call it what you like, but that's what I'm hoping for in the way of suggestions. I'm thinking One More Girl by Patty fits the bill nicely. Not for any particular reason other than she's prefaced it by saying she got really pissed off and then wrote it. This is for a mix tape for a friend, by the way. She needs a little Grrl Power. This is an AMAZING song, and is full of chick power. It's very much got an "F-you" quality to it that I always find pleasurable. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Dec 2000 14:56:26 -0800 From: aubrey9@u.washington.edu Subject: Re: MM: RE: Empowerment Chick Songs (little bit of Patty) I think I've mentioned this person on the list before but you should ALL check her out. This person is Carrie Akre. This year she put out her first solo album called Home which amazon.com named as album of the year. However, this is not her first album!! She was previously in a band called Goodness and one called Hammerbox. Both were signed to major record labels and then dropped. So Carrie Akre started her own record label, Good-Ink Records. She is also currently busy with a couple of side projects..one with Mike McCreedy from Pearl Jam called The Rockfords. If you are into more rockin music you should check out Carrie's work with Hammerbox, Goodness, and The Rockfords, and if you are into something a little more mellow check out her solo cd. Its good stuff..i'm telling you. If you are at all interested check out these sites. http://www.goodinkrecords.com http://www.goodness.com http://www.rockfords.com http://www.rockfords.net Thanks, Aubrey oh yeah A BIG THANK YOU to whoever sent the thing out on the list about the Patty Promo cd!!! Or ANY Liz Phair, for that matter? Actually, "Help Me Mary" might be my favorite here. Classic. (I've heard Robbie Fulks will knock this out live - at least I think it was Robbie I heard does it) "Joy" by Lucinda Williams my friend Monica is mentioning that Steve Earle does a great version of "I'm Looking Through You" - a great empowerment song, period. The classic "You're so Vain." This is where I wish I knew more Patty Smith.
