My name is Eric, I'm an 18 year old freshman in college...living in Clarksville,TN. So...I love Patty's music, especially "Living With GHosts"! I was introduced to her by a singer named Kathleen Lague (check her out!) who does a GREAT cover of "Every Little Bit" in her show...she told me to pick up "Living with ghosts". I couldn't find it here so I got "Flaming Red" instead, which I LOVE when I'm in the mood to rock! Lately I've been in a very "acoustic" mood (haha) so "LWG" has been permanently in my car and cd player at home. Yea! Favorite songs "Forgiveness" and "You NEver Get What you want". Okay I'm done rambling...glad I found this list! Rock on ~eric "I love harder than most do I've made my heart painfully too true I take my lessons well and so when They lie to me, I can tell " ~Happy Rhodes ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2000 03:17:05 EDT From: Everyman7@aol.com Subject: MM: No Subject Last Call and Conversation With a Ghost are really beautiful songs and Patty does beautiful backup on them too. Ellis Paul opened for Patty at the Somerville Theatre show in Mass. a couple of years ago and she came out for these songs- first time I ever heard them. Go get the new Julie Miller Cd also with Patty doing backup on I Still Cry. They did it on Austin City Limits also. We had to play that song on repeat all day when we first got it. Until last week I didn't know who Beth Nielsen Chapman was until I heard Sand and Water on another tv show (I think it was ER). It's wild how you stumble upon something then it starts turning up in other places. I saw/heard the Bette and Dolly rendition of Moses and while it was sung nicely I surely didn't expect to hear it with such an upbeat tempo. I felt it changed the true emotion of the song. wrote Date: Thu, 26 Oct 2000 18:02:36 EDT From: SteveM712@aol.com Subject: Re: MM: RE: Patty G's "Moses" hits primetime TV! OK, this is WAY off topic, but my 2 cents on the Bette Midler thread: I went to the taping of her sitcom last week, and was really impressed with how she seemed: hard working, kind, generous (chatting with the crew, giving backrubs to the extras, thanking the audience profusely for staying for the length of the taping [5 or 6 hrs]). Also, extra points because the song she sang a number of times during the episode was Beth Nielsen Chapman's "Sand and Water." So between that and Patty's tunes, she knows a good songwriter when she sees one. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2000 16:57:48 GMT From: "Greg Alexander" Subject: Re: MM: RE: RE: Patty G's "Moses" hits primetime TV! I think it's an honor to have someone cover your song, especially someone with as much notoriety as Bette Midler. Plus, I think the rendition puts the song in a new perspective that I had never heard before, which is cool. > I saw/heard the Bette and Dolly rendition of Moses and while it was sung > nicely I surely didn't expect to hear it with such an upbeat tempo. I felt > it changed the true emotion of the song. Well, of course it did. Would you want it to be performed the same way with the same emotion if it's covered? To me, the Bette Midler cover of "Moses" is much more effective than the Dixie Chicks' cover of "Let Him Fly." While the latter is basically a re-hashing (yes, a beautiful re-hashing, but a re-hashing nonetheless) of Patty's song, Midler's rendition lets us look at "Moses" in a different way. A great song is like a prism - it changes dramatically with the angle at which you look at it. That Midler could take "Moses" and do something that stayed with the spirit of the original but dramatically changed the emotion derived from it is just a demonstration of the versatality of Patty's songwriting. I think Midler's rendition is quite effective. Oh, and to comment on the earlier Tom Waits connection - Midler also regularly covers Waits' "Shiver Me Timbers." She's got great taste in songwriters, that's for sure. - -- Mark Miazga miazgama@msu.edu http://go.to/MarkMiazga 157 Phillips Hall East Lansing, MI 48825 (517) 355-4991 http://www.msu.edu/~miazgama Masters of Arts in Curriculum and Teaching Student Teacher, Eastern High School Assistant Hall Director, Snyder-Phillips Hall ********************************** I Support Al Gore for US President & Debbie Stabenow for US Senate! http://www.algore2000.com http://www.stabenow2000.net/ ********************************** ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2000 19:58:37 GMT From: "Greg Alexander" Subject: Re: MM: RE: RE: Patty G's "Moses" hits primetime TV!
