["Jennifer Lynn Caputo"] Re: MM: Detroit radio rant and Recommendation (off-topic) [Lisa C Subject: MM: New mp3 - Detroit mishers - I need your help! Hey everyone, First off I added Patty's performance of "Top of the World" from Austin City Limits to the mp3 page. It's an incredible version and if you haven't heard it yet you need to check it out! Secondly and entirely off topic. I have been out of the Detroit area for the summer because I was living up at the lake house. I get back and am very eager to listen to my favorite radio station: 93.9 The River - the only metro-detroit station to ever play Patty Griffin! Well I flip to the station and to my horror, guess what I hear? "Upside inside out, Livin' la vida loca!" Oh yeah....Ricky Martin - screaming over my airwaves... turns out my radio station is now "light FM" or something like that. Can anyone tell me what happened?!?!? When did The River change formats? Why? Where do we turn for good music now? I'm so depressed I honestly feel the tears coming on every time I get in my car. Alright... everyone sing with me to Dar Williams' "Are You Out There" Are You Out There? Can You Here This? Jimmy Olsen? Johnny Memphis? I WAS OUT HERE LISTENTING ALL THIS TIME!!!! This is so upsetting.... I got out of work and flipped to 93.9, only to hear Britney Spears. I could only laugh because we have sunk so far. I wish Ann Delisi could come and save us; it seems she fought a losing battle. Even 96.3 is sliding more and more the middle. I wonder if she's still program director there. ****for non-detroiters***** The worst tragedy of all is (I'm assuming) NO MORE ACOUSTIC CAFE!!! The great radio show based out of Ann Arbor will probably now NOT AIR in detroit at all!! What the f**k! Anyway, everyone check out www.acafe.com for a great acoustic radio show. Very good stuff. Speaking of Dar (first time I heard her was on 93.9, too), who's checking her out this tour? How are the shows? I'll be at the Michigan Theatre, I think i'm in row F. :) Apologies if this is tooo off-topic; it's been so quiet around here, I thought I'd throw it out there. Then again, he was on campus all summer and was there right when tix went on sale. YAY! I'm so excited to see Dar...I've never seen her live!!!! sigh. Also for Detroit-mishers (sorry to the rest of you!), have you checked out the awesome shows coming up this fall at the Ark???? Even the people NOT from Detroit (if you're even reading this far) should check out some of the shows and possible make it to Ann Arbor for some of them. Lucy Kaplansky, Victoria Williams, Ellis Paul....the list goes on and on. Check out the calendar at: http://www.a2ark.org/ >Apologies if this is tooo off-topic; it's been so >quiet around here, I thought I'd throw it out there. >Feel free to delete. Yes, Jen. I'm afraid it's true. My friends and I have already had our bitch sessions about this as well...haha. I was driving sometime last week or the week before and I heard them say Lite FM as I was turning the radio off and I thought I heard wrong. But then I got an email from another mailing list I'm on from someone in Detroit complaining about the same thing! I thought, "oh no! It's true!!! SHIT!" The only station that would play Patty, Tori, Tara, Chantal, really cool acoustic cafe shows, etc. is now GONE. and we're left with ANOTHER channel, lite or not, that plays Ricky Martin and Backstreet Boys along with Gordon Lightfoot and Kim Carnes - hahahaha. I seriously don't know how these great stations get cut and the crappy ones stay. Remember 105.1 The Edge? That station is what 89X should be - a great mix of eclectic/alterna rock that really mixed it up and played a variety of stuff....then one day ..CUT and turned into a mowtown station! I have no problem with Mowtown, but now there are NO true "alternative" radio stations out there! I was in Norman, OK in March and THEY had better radio stations than in Detroit! HI - isn't this the Motor City!?! Shouldn't we have a broad variety of music on our airwaves.....suck ass. >:0 Okay....enough bitching....especially when there is no patty content...sorry all! Glad to see you're back Jen! :) Thanks for the new mp3!!! :) :) :) Sarah >From: "Jennifer Lynn Caputo" >To: "Mad-mission@smoe. org" >CC: "Jeff" >Subject: MM: New mp3 - Detroit mishers - I need your help! >Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 00:12:19 -0400 > >Hey everyone, > >First off I added Patty's performance of "Top of the World" from Austin >City >Limits to the mp3 page. Yes we're hearing canned muzak for two weeks and then we can expect DJ's. You can change your pre-select on your radio anytime now. The River management has decided that there is no competition for WNIC. I talked to an insider (actually Zak - and she's pissed) and she said they there is no competition for WNIC in the Detroit area and they are gearing their progamming for women?! - Who figured this one out - some guy?? Anyway - in my humble opinion - the Golden Day's of Detroit radio (hey - I'm from Canada) is when Ann Delisi ruled the waves. Apparently, those of us the enjoyed the River when Ann was in charge are not very good at filling out the neccesary demographic questionaires (I don't know what that is - but I was told that the number of listeners does not reflect what the demographics are telling them). Also, speaking of shows coming to the Ark - check out Susan Werner. Thanks e. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 11:54:47 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: MM: List administration - do NOT use the word "help" in the subject Hi Mishers :-) Just wanted to let you all in on something again. (I last posted this over a year ago) It's in your best interests to never send a post onto the Mad Mission list with the word "help" in the subject, as the software that runs this list will automatically reject the post and bounce it to me for approval. (and there's nothing I can do about it, I cannot "turn it off") The software recognizes the word "help" (and others like "test") as commands and has the rejection built-in as a tool to prevent command posts from making it to the list. It's why you never see posts like subscribe end make it on to the list. (and believe you me, MANY of those come in and get bounced too) Posts with "help" in the subject WILL eventually make it to the list after I check email and see the bounce and then approve it (I've had three already today) but if you do not want them delayed, it's best not to use "help". (You could misspell it as "hellp" but then you'd look like a do-do or you could add a space and spell it "he lp". It's what I do sometimes when approving posts with "help" in the subject to avoid future replies bouncing) Mike - Mad Mission list Grand Poobah P.S. I haven't had time to read the list in well over a month, almost two. Seriously, if enough people voice their complaints (and if the stations's ratings drop), the station might get a clue and change back. I work at a talk radio station, and we take listener suggestions very seriously. It sounds like enough of you certainly have adament enough feelings. Top 40 radio today is an absolute disgrace. I suppose there is some merit to it, in that so many people do enjoy it, but I know a large number of people who find the music of MTV/radio nightmarish. When I was living at home, I absolutely couldn't listen to the radio. Now that I'm at school, I can listen to WRLT, thank goodness. Might I suggest some people listen to it on the web at www.wrlt.com ? They also play Patty, Tori, some "mainstream alternative" (how's that for an oxymoron), and some really off the wall bands. It might atleast get you by while someone in Detroit gets their act together. Do complain to the station. As implausible as it might seem, listeners can run a station from the outside by their influence. Like take where I live for instance. There isn't a single rap station. Well, there's 93.3 (the beat of the bay) if you STRETCH it, but it's mostly slow jams or the same top 40 rap all the freakin time. Boring. It drives me insane. 104.1 was this bad country/athletic sport of the month station, then changed to a total kick ass rap station, and BAM...it's another freakin top 40 mainstream. Yawn. Plus, we had Island 105 for a while with Club La Villa in Panama City. They rocked tits. My drive home at night was always filled with some steady beat techno mix. That is, until the Club La Villa owners got busted and their nightclub shut down. Even top 40 isn't incredibly bad or anything, but there are very few songs I want to hear over and over and over....especially with those "hi-I'm-a Deejay-talking-constantly-because-I-don't-have-anything-really-cool-to-talk-about-so-we're-going-to-play-this-next-song-that-you-heard-ten-minutes-ago-and-I'll-talk-over-the-beginning-only-right-here-on-all-new-hot-blah-blah-blah-blah." Slam. But I don't mind listening to Brit or Rick. They have good voices and good songs....hell, I don't mind drinking Budweiser beer either, but too much of both will make me hurl. Just don't expect me to go to one of those teeny-screaming concerts. I'll just jab my eyes out with knitting needles first and get myself used to the pain. Never-the-less, it still is sad that the COOL stations are dwindling. Of course I wouldn't know it since there aren't any cool stations here. One new station in my area has potential. They've been playing great metal...better than the other ones that use the metal facade. Hello, there ARE other metal bands than Metallica (God Bless Lars). Whatever happened to cool college stations that played whatever? I miss Bo Bear (a deejay that would play "puff the magic dragon" because he felt like it) and Rugratt (taking all the metal requests from the 80s and 90s). There's certainly none of that here on the bible belt buckle. The college radio station around here is NPR affiliated. And while I'm glad there's classical (you know the violin music) and an occasional "accoustical interlude" show, there's really no alternative time. "Thistle and Shamrock," "Hearts of Space," "Echos," "Performance Today," are fantastic programs. But I haven't heard Velvet Cactus Society in years....and THAT sucks pronto. I wish there was another college radio station. Yes. I want some cheese with my whine, please. A bit of Norwegian Beaver Cheese, perhaps. Back to work, school, and all that other real world crap. hit me baby one more time. paul ************************************** * If my wife's watching, I'll be * * home after the meeting and I hope * * the furniture is put back where * * I like it..........behind the * * store window! * * --Red Green * * * ************************************** _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
