Take Care, Jen :) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2000 14:26:35 -0400 From: "Donald Henn" Subject: MM: Tix MMers , First off , I only found one Dixie Chicks review in the Texas papers , (No review of the Chicks or Patty in the Austin paper!) & it only mentioned Patty being there. Tickets for the Dixie Chicks with Patty opening in Jacksonville 10-1 , & Fort Lauderdale 9-28 , go on sale through Ticketmaster on August 19 at 10AM. I saw Natalie Merchant a week or two ago , & in a folk-rich set , she opened up with "Wayfaring Stranger". Natalie has one of the richest & most distinctive voices around , & is a great singer. Her band is also top-notch. Yet , I definitely like Patty's version with just her guitar so much more. I keep trying to define what it is about Patty's music that makes me respond to it far more than anyone else's , & I hope I occasionally succeed. Lately I've been thinking that it would be so much easier to just define it as "soul'. I never did consider Aretha to be "Queen of Soul" , preferring Janis Joplin , Etta James , & many others in that area. I am , at this moment , re-thinking my definition of soul , as expressed in music. Soul in music , as I perceive it , comes from letting out long-suppressed thoughts & emotions. I think that it is also very subjective , so I have no argument with those who would disagree with me. While the music in the '50s through the '70s was dominated by such music , since then , I see most popular music as whiny , bubble-gum , destructively aggressive , or just "pleasant". Patty avoids all these things in her music , & in my opinion , is currently the "Queen". An oasis in a desert of mediocrity. Patty's soul shows , not only in the songs she writes , & the way she sings them , but also in her choice of cover songs. Thanks for listening. I know dark clouds will gather 'round me I know my way is rough and steep Yet beauteous fields lie just before me Where God's redeemed , their vigils keep "Wayfaring Stranger" (Traditional Hymn) Don ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2000 13:30:47 -0500 From: "Ronda Blacksher" Subject: MM: Patty in Austin w/the Chicks Hi all! Just wanted to post a quick review of Saturday night's show -- We arrived a bit after P. started, so I'm not sure what she came out with. I do have to say that it did my heart good to walk into the auditorium at the beginning of Flaming Red. I'm sure some of the more countrified fans checked their tickets to verify the stadium! Patty was great. She was more extroverted than I have ever seen -- did several songs w/o a guitar in front of her, talked to the crowd, walked around, waved her arms and just generally acted cool and collected. The home crowd was responsive to her and almost wouldn't stop applauding at the end of her set. She did several new tunes - one of which sounded downright country (the lips tune??). Seems like her choices were more pop-oriented (term used loosely), which I guess makes sense in light of the crowd. Her last number of the night was 'Mary,' which she dedicated to all the women (chicks) in the audience. It was fantastic to hear the crowd noise dim and then fade while she sang. Her voice was strong and I got chills more than once hearing her hit the notes. She reappeared in the middle of the Chicks set to sing the first part of 'Fly.' The girls remarked they thought Patty about the best songwriter around. All in all, one of the most sure Patty performances yet. It's nice to see her gaining momentum. My girlfriend Wendy and I saw her come out of a movie we were watching a couple of weekends back. I think it might not be long before those days are over. Hope all are well! After that, people can ask around to find someone to make it for them, but the tree will be over. E-mail me privately if interested. You will be notified early next week, maybe Sunday, about branch assignments and you can make your own arrangements then to send your branch person 2 blank CDs and a SASE- or trades if preferred.
