I don't think Patty is a Rickie Lee wanna be by any stretch of the imagination. And I didn't catch it in every song. But I did catch some subtle nuances and phrasings that are reminicsent of Ms. Jones-particularly on the song "Foregivness" and "Mad Mission." I would actually look at it as a compliment. I think Rickie Lee is pretty damn good, myself. Well, this is all just my very humble opinion... :-) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 May 2000 07:46:38 -0400 From: "Greg Pendleton" Subject: MM: Re: Misty/Rickie Lee Now that you mention it, there is a bit of Rickie Lee in "Mad Mission". I don't really hear it in "Forgiveness", but that's just my opinion. I agree that a Rickie Lee comparison is not necessarily a bad thing. Of course, had Patty been compared with Britney Spears, I would have had a major beef!! :-) Greg - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pamela Pollock" To: Sent: Thursday, May 25, 2000 1:56 AM Subject: MM: Misty/Rickie Lee > I do have to agree a tad bit about the Rickie Lee thing. About Misty's post about the EW review: You're right... they're off their rocker. The main reason I bought LWG way back when was because our local station (then 101.9, now 103.1... it moved in a kinda roundabout way... but that's another tale) gave airplay to 'Every Little Bit,' and it struck a nerve emotionally. It's also why I continue to support her, and why I think most list-members are on this list. I have a bigger problem with the first line. "If earnestness is the bane of unplugged artists ,this 31 year-old Bostonian shows promise simply in dodging that first obstacle." Patty's music , & most great music , is earnest if it is anything. Perhaps he was referring to those who try to make their music more earnest than it is , trying to inject more passion into it than what flows naturally. In my experience , that is one of the major differences between seasoned artists & wannabe artists or beginners. The allusion to Ricki Lee Jones , is the part that I take the least exception with. Rachel's bio site mentions Ricki Lee & "The Boss" as two of Patty's early favorites. Although the writer suggests that Patty is similar to Ricki Lee in overall style , I see only a smattering of the influence. One of Patty's greatest strengths is that she has no overall style. I've heard her style touch on Billie Holiday , Patsy Cline , Joan Baez , & many others. Having those names jump into my mind as I listened to her ,was one of the first indications that she is truly something special. His second line that includes the phrases , "heartbroken (naturally) lyrics" , & "vocals only slightly tweak the familiar girl-with-guitar scenario" shows a kind of contempt that second-rate critics seem to think they must have to be taken seriously. If Nisid thinks that Patty's music is more pleasant than powerful , my assessment is that his ears do not connect directly to his soul.
