At the risk of sounding completely crazed and ridiculous, I'm gonna tell you my tale. I'm still smiling and sort of mentally buzzing from the whole thing ... so hopefully you all will enjoy too. Yesterday afternoon I went to see the Loose Diamonds here in Austin. For those of you unfamiliar, this is Patty's beau's old band. (They were great!!) At any rate, there I am in the crowd when I notice this very small redhead standing next to me. She has these outrageous black shoes on, so I sort of start to pay attention to her presence generally. Very thin she was and very tiny - lots of red hair that she kept fidgeting with while looking around nervously. At some point, she turns toward me and I get a good look at her face. It's none other than our own Ms. Griffin herself!!! I trust I'm telling this to a group of people who can understand the following feeling. I'm usually not big on the star/fan syndrome in any sense, but I was FREAKED! Without getting into a lot of detail, my life is substantially different because of this person (I actually met my significant other via this very listserv about a year ago - but more on that later) ... and it was truly odd to be standing next to her in the crowd watching someone else play. Long story short, she ended up moving across the room to a secluded area and disappeared for awhile. Luckily enough, my girlfriend and I actually got to talk with her a bit after the show (her more than me as I was afraid I wouldn't be able to say much at all!). Patty seemed very, very shy - but was friendly enough and signed a cd cover for us. Nothing huge or fabulous happened and I feel a bit ridiculous at being so pleased over the whole thing ... but it was truly nice to stand there next to someone whose talent I admire so much - to talk normally with her and sort of see the way she interacted with folks. I'm sure my partner in crime is going to post her perception and tell you about some info. she got from Patty - so I'll leave it to her. I will say that Patty's in-person presence is about as compelling as her music. She's not overly extroverted, but you definitely get the feeling there's something nice happening behind those eyes.
