I just wanted to tell everyone that I just got through hearing Patty on that t.v movie "Trapped in a Purple Haze" just now. I was writing a paper for school and wasn't really paying attention to what was on when I heard "One Big Love" being played. I was like "OMG, THAT'S PATTY". Needless to say, mom is still recovering from my yelling. LOL Just thought you guys would want to hear about it if you didn't already know :) C-YA Caroline ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2000 21:02:14 -0400 From: "Donald Henn" Subject: MM: Patty's recent shows MMers , Well , Patty's shows in New Hampshire & Michigan seems to have been pretty well reviewed by Dave & others , but I have to put my 2 cents worth in. As usual , her performance in New Hampshire was at that consistently high level that I've come to expect from Patty , but in Michigan , she completely blew past that & set a new standard. While the Michigan shows were definitely better , performance -wise , she deserves a gazillion points for creative boldness at her New Hampshire show. First was using the reverb effect on 5 or 6 of her songs. Although her vocal performances were excellent throughout , I didn't like the reverb on any of the songs where she hadn't used it before , except for "Little God". On "Poor Man's House" , I thought it was intrusive & competed with her voice for attention. Although the reverb sounds great on songs like "Top of the World" & "Tomorrow Night" where the notes are widely separated & the echo effect is pronounced , on songs where the notes aren't widely separated , the echoes overlap & sound like so much noise. This might work on a hard-driving rock song with a full band , but I don't think it works when it's the only instrument being used. Another problem I had with it was that , I had the impression she completely lost her rhythm once during "Perfect White Girls" , & came close a few other times. My guess is that it happened because she didn't have the benefit of crisp notes to use as cues. On a more positive note , I loved the Casio keyboard. When she played it on "Mother of God" it had a calliope-like sound which I thought fit perfectly with the song , & I liked it a lot more than the subsequent piano version that she did in Michigan. As for the Michigan shows , her performance level would have stretched my credibility if I hadn't seen & heard it with my own eyes & ears. I remember telling a few fans at the 2nd show & Calvin College that they were in for a treat because Patty was on top of her game. I initially considered the 1st Ark show to be the best of the 3 , but as my subconscious sorts things out & my strongest memories are of her focus & intensity at Calvin College , I have to go with that one. I think I liked the Ark show more initially because I was so pleased to see her exceed her NH performance , & she seemed so relaxed & comfortable. At Calvin her guitar playing was much more focused & flowing , with very few mistakes or hesitation , & that powerful voice seemed to have no upper limit. While the Ark fans were very enthusiastic , the larger crowd at Calvin was even more so. We managed to bring her back for 2 encores. Three songs for the 1st one , & 1 for the second. I recently noticed another resurgence of interest in Billie Holiday's music. There was an article about her in my local paper yesterday , & I got to listen to her while I was in a book store , shopping for my daughter's birthday gift. There were many artists more popular than Billie during her era , but her music is standing the test of time because she has that ultimate artistic gift of expressive human emotion that she communicates through her music. In my opinion , Patty Griffin takes a back seat to no one in that department. So , while it may be of little solace to Patty & her fans , if she never becomes a big star , people in the year 2050 are going to be wondering why. Taking into account both her creativity & performance abilities , Patty Griffin has no peers. I guess that was more than 2 cents , but you can keep the change. My name's Robert and I got into Patty last year when I heard Living With Ghosts. I was totally blown away. This chick has really got some pipes. When I first heard Cain off the Lilith Fair CD, I went into spasms because it was so good. Anyway, I've never seen her in concert, but I found out she's coming to Charlotte on Sep. 8 and I was wondering if there's any way I can get advance tickets through Patty. I'm not all that interested in seeing the Dixie Chicks and I'm afraid I'll get bad seats. Any info would be appreciated. Also, I'm dying to here more stuff by her other than what's on the CD's so if any of you want to send me some stuff through email(MP3 or WAV) that would be outstanding. I'll try to repay you in some way. Sorry to bother y'all. Have a good day. Knowing the $ induced narrow vision of management teams , my guess is that Patty is going to be limited to songs from her new CD , so that they can promote it. Hello ? The best way to promote Patty Griffin's new CD is to promote Patty Griffin's incredible talent in the form that her audience will most appeciate it , consistent of course , with what Patty wants to perform. If they hear Patty's substantial talents showcased in their preferred style , they will do as many of Patty's current fans have done , & try to get their hands on anything that's available. So , as a favor to myopic management teams everywhere , I'm going to list the songs that should be presented to Dixie Chick fans: (Pretty arrogant , huh?) You Decided Goodbye Long Ride Home Change Crazy!!! Let Him Fly????!!!! Off You Go I'm stuck at the moment because I think they should get to hear everything , but I'll collect myself & go on. (I hope no one thinks I'm under the influence) Time Will do the Talking (15 minutes later , after careful study) Perfect White Girls ( Including the "kiss their asses" line , I hope Patty didn't put a bow-tie on her music , or have someone else do it , by discontinuing that line , so that she can get into Safeway. It was eliminated in her NH & Michigan performances) One More Girl Swing Me (Truth #2) Little God Flaming Red Let Your Freedom Ring I could go on & on , but I guess that she will be limited to 6-8 songs , so I hope any management team in shouting distance gets the gist of what I'm saying.
