I've been reading all the emails about the patty tribute cd and actually got excited about doing a cover of "off you go" or "under these clouds" (my kareoke machine does'nt know what it's in for) But then I read Pauls edition of the NAY SAYER ;-) and it rings real, we might get in trouble for releasing a cd without written consent. Imagine the fingers of patty's management pointing down upon us!! But I seriously doubt they have the time or money to chase after and kill such small rats. My thought is that I'd like to hear the voices of all our MM talent, regardless of the copyright infringement problem. If we all decide singing Patty's songs is too risky, lets trade a tape with OUR OWN songs...(assuming you guys have written your own?) just a thought...there's no legal implications for singing our own material. I have been involved with these projects for both well established and up-and-coming musicians, and I just don't know how anyone could get mad about a for-entertainment-only tribute. I see the point but if we're not going to distribute then it just becomes a different thing...when you release a song, legally, anyone can cover it in their act, but can't record it to sell. It would be really lame for her management to get mad, though not a surprise in the legal climate of music today. I am not afraid to go forward with it anyway since I have no intention of attempting to profit from doing this cover. And who would pay money to hear someone ELSE do her songs when they could buy a CD of PATTY doin' em? ; ) I understand what's being said but the other artists on other lists for whom we have done this sort of thing have never been anything but duly flattered when handed their copy of the CD/tape in question. Hm. And on the Posies list, we did two - one with our original songs, and one covering Posies songs. Both are cool. (THey were seperate projects) A known lawbreaker anyway, *andie* - --- JessBartn@aol.com wrote: > Hi Guys! > > I've been reading all the emails about the patty tribute cd and > actually got > excited about doing a cover of "off you go" or "under these clouds" > (my > kareoke machine does'nt know what it's in for) > But then I read Pauls edition of the NAY SAYER ;-) and it rings > real, we > might get in trouble for releasing a cd without written consent. > Imagine the > fingers of patty's management pointing down upon us!! Hey, Mike, it's Regis Philbin! You're absolutely correct! This song hit number one on the Billboard chart in 1965! You still have all three lifelines remaining! (pause to inhale) For those who might be interested, the Good Morning Vietnam soundtrack is short but sweet, with my personal faves being Louis Armstrong's beautiful "What A Wonderful World" and The Vogues' "Five O'Clock World" (Drew Carey's first production number).
