Got a question: One of my all-time favorite singer/songwriter/musician is Tom Waits. I remember speaking to one of The Badlees' guys about him, and they mentioned how they used to talk about him with Patty - and how she really liked him too. Does anyone know of which of his stuff (and there is alot!) does she think is a masterpiece? I'm just wondering......the "Rain Dogs" album strikes me the most. But I've been/seen some bios on Patty, and she lists some of her faves, and Tom Waits isn't one of them. I'm just interested to know what her opinion on him is. I think he's brilliant.......just my opinion.....but what's hers? ((*.*))darcie. Hey everyone, Just wanted to let you all know that the Extraordinary Darcie Miner is not only featured, but on the front page of Unsung Hero Magazine this month! You can check out the article at: Unsung Hero Magazine or at: www.uhero.com If you live in PA, MD, NY, or DC area, you can pick up this magazine at many, many music stores! If you live elsewhere, .. the online article is going to have to do. This little development has brought me to the idea that maybe we could come up with a magazine that exclusively features all the amazingly talented members of this list... huh?? How does that sound? :-) Have a great weekend... We Are Water, We flow and flow ~~ The Almighty Patty G ~~ ******************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2000 17:05:08 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: MM: News from Pattys' management Hi everyone :-) Just got an email from Patty's management with a small amount of new news in it. (maybe some old news too...not sure) First of all, you know how Patty's "Blue Sky" is being featured on Moxie Girl commercials? Well, their website ( www.mxgonline.com ) is going to have a contest to give away a guitar with the same promotion that is using "Blue Sky". I checked out the web site, and while there is a clickable near the top about Patty, I can't find any mention of the give away, so I guess it has not started yet. Hopefully someone will post when it does start. (the text about Patty from that site is below, after all the news) Next, it seems Patty is just about done recording the new CD in New Orleans. "it sounds amazing" says her management. Well duh! This is Patty we are talking about! Like they would ever say "it sounds like hell" or "it sounds so-so". Know what I mean? But I'm sure it DOES sound amazing and cannot wait. However....we'll have to wait. They are shooting for a release sometime in the fall. (Drats! I wanted it this summer!) Also, they may have some shows where Patty will be opening for a major tour that will run from June into August. They might be able to confirm this in a couple of weeks. I was not told who the act is Patty would be opening for, nor if she'd be solo or with the band, nor when dates might be announced. I do believe this is next bit of info is old news to some degree, but since I have not been able to keep up with the list recently, plus the fact that I can't remember squat lately, I don't know if this has been posted or not, or even if I myself may have posted it or not. (I'll get better, just working too hard). Anyway, the last bit is that Patty taped Austin City Limits with EmmyLou Harris, Buddy and Julie Miller and Dave Mathews. No air date has been set yet as far as they know. (was this old news????? :-) Well, that's it. Hopefully we'll get news about this tour and dates soon. Mike :-) Text about Patty from www.mxgonline.com : When the MXG crew informed me that I needed to select the song for our national ad campaign, I thought "sure, no pressure." In all honesty, I was flipping out. I started to go through hundreds of CDs. Wait, make that thousands of CDs. I wanted to make sure we had the perfect song and the perfect artist for our commercial. I was starting to get frustrated as my relentless search continued. Then I found Patty Griffin's album Flaming Red and I knew my search was over. The only problem was every song was phat and I just couldn't decide on one, at first. After repeated listening, I just couldn't resist Patty's song "Blue Sky." The mix of edgy rock and light vocals is the perfect fit for MXG. I hope you dig the song and love the commercial. The process wasn't the easiest, but when we found Patty, I knew we were on to something special. - - * The Patty Griffin/Mad-Mission@smoe List Homepage is at: * http://www.quackquack.net/pattyg * * Rachel Martin's Patty Griffin Lyrics Archive is at * http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3079/patty.html * * Jerry Zigmont's Flaming Red - A Patty Griffin Website is at * http://members.tripod.com/PattyGriffin * * Katie Peterson's Patty Griffin Guitar Tabs Archive is at * http://members.tripod.com/~Lifey/patty.html * * DuckOfPrey or WhyADuck55 on AOL and/or AOL Instant Messenger ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Mar 2000 18:52:44 EST From: JessBartn@aol.com Subject: MM: More on MXG ONline Thanks for the MXG online info Mike! Subject: MM: Rarities? hi all, my name's rich and i'm new to the list. i've been digging patty since 1995, when my friend (and at-the-time-manager) joel playing "living with ghosts" almost daily at our record store until it seeped into my subconscious. and then, of course, "flaming red" floored me in a totally different way. and now i'm turning my girlfriend on to patty's music as well. and so the cycle repeats. anyway, if anyone has a copy of this first "rarities" on CD (or any other rare/live stuff) and would like to burn me a copy for trade, please email me at: rchallen@mindspring.com i have no unreleased patty--just her two albums--but i have plenty of other bands... dunno what folks on the list like, my tastes tend to run towards counting crows, radiohead, wilco, whiskeytown, tom waits, duncan sheik... so i have plenty of rarities from those acts and others. just contact me and maybe we can work something out. and oh yeah, the reason we don't get so upset when someone does a straight patty griffin cover (i.e. the dixie chicks and martina mcbride)? because then the credit reads "written by patty griffin" and some of those dollars that the dixie chicks bring in go to patty and maybe some of those dixie chicks fans are turned on to "living with ghosts" and the cycle repeats AGAIN. worked for tom waits and lucinda williams and richard thompson and so on and so on... - --rICH Listen to Rich: Visit THE RICH HOMEPAGE to hear tracks from LIFE/DEATH... 15 songs of romance and retribution for those who know all too well... Getting paid to write emails. Again. *********the "not patty griffin related" part******** Tom Waits rocks total tits! I was in my "80s rocks" phase (I guess I am come to think of it) in 1993 when my college friend (a true deadhead who painted her P.O.S. truck with dancing bears and stars) was trying to get me into the Dead. She was doing a good job of it, and then said, "hey, I know someone you're either gonna love or totally hate." She popped in a Tom Waits CD and that was it. He kicks ass. I have to admit though, every once in a while I just have to say "what the hell...?" But that's because I usually listen to Mr. Waits while I'm cleaning out the pad. And if I get frustrated at something I take it out on the music. But he just bleeds with originality, and that's all I'm going to say about that. Actually, that makes a good segue.. but first! *******the "way to go Darcie Miner" part************** hey, way to go there, Darcie Miner!! I've only heard you sing through my PC, but that's pretty cool making a cover of a music mag. Don't just shrug that off, that's good shiite. *****the "ripping off" part********** speaking of originality, I'm going to have to stick my huge ass into the discussion of ripping off music. Well, I actually don't see it as a bad thing relatively. I mean, aren't we having to deal with world hunger and terrorism and the nuclear war threat? Who really cares (besides the ones involved of course) if Vanilla Ice takes the bass part to "Under Pressure" and uses it for "To the Extreme?" I mean, I felt for Queen, and was glad they got some sort of settlement deal but....come on. Maybe I'm just one of those non-artistic dudes that loves the mass media fodder dished out every day, but it doesn't ruin my whole day when I hear the beginning to Whitesnake's "Is this Love" and then it turns into Jon Bon Blow Me's "You Give love a Bad Name." (those two beginnings are almost identical...I like the Whitesnake song better). I'm not gagging when "Superfreak" is turned into STOP!....Hammertime! either. And....and and and and...I thought it was MAX FREAKIN-AY COOL of Sting to sing "I want my MTV" for that Dire Straits song using the chorus of "Don't stand so close to me." Whilst I shant go on with this drivel, I would finally embellish my opinion by mentioning that Hard-Core techno dance music is da bomb, and where would they be without sampling? I surely wouldn't like it as much. Before I get bombarded with posts about what a shallow, idiotic pig I am, I would just like to point out something: This opinion is coming from someone who thought "hey! That's Allison Moyet's laugh on "Macarena" from Yaz's album entitled Upstairs at Eric's. I sure hope she gets credit for that. I'm going to tell everyone I know about that." Then like two seconds later I'm like, "hey, Paul, who really cares? You got better things to do like drink Guinness." Then I was like, "yeah Paul. You tell yourself. Way to go buddy. Don't take none of that shit from him." Then I got into a fight with myself and I lost. But I'm just waiting for the next time when I'm not looking, then it will be POW. okay, so I got totally off the subject. So, I'll just go ahead and sign off. I've gotta be on TV in ten minutes anyway. As always the opinions expressed by me are in no way concrete, but instead they are plaid and subject to change without legal notice. Any questions should be referred to the troubleshooting guide of your user's manual. buh bye. paul ********************************** * Wheel's on Fire, * * Rolling down the road. * * Best notify my next of kin, * * this wheel shall explode! * * --Theme from * * Absolutely Fabulous * ********************************** ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V4 #68 ********************************
