You can hear "Tony" in "Everything You Want"? Where? Sorry, I don't get that at all..... As far as Melissa vs Joan, I heard the likeness right away, even in the subject matter. No so much the songs were about the same thing of course, but had relgious themes. Also, just have to put my two cents in, I finally watched Sessions, and I was very disappointed in the song selections. I wasn't there, I don't know what songs they played, but while Flaming Red rocks, she was once again completely overpowered, just like on the new song she did. Might as well have been Joan Jett up there. I felt only two songs showcased Patty. I know the band is happy with the selection of songs, but they must be for Band reasons. Whiplash bassing or something cool on the guitar. A friend of mine was watching with me and said, "What's she SAYING?!?!?!" He liked the songs that showcased Patty though. I don't think too many will be buying CD's based on that show's performance.....but then, that's me. john in sumner wa ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Hey all, My email was shot for most of last week so I didn't get to see if anyone on the list noticed that Patty's song "Let Him Fly" (covered by the Dixie Chicks) was played during the intro to the Grammys last week. They played a decent portion of it and it sounds pretty close to Patty's original. Forgive me if someone already pointed this out. -Cristina ********************************************** "I have never chased the curve. Whoever owned the rights to the Creedence songs sued him for using similar riffs in his solo music. He actually had to bring his guitar into court and play parts of songs. Now if that isn't ridiculous. Yeah...as a guitarist and a sometimes songwriter I can definitely attest that there are only so many progressions and melodies to choose from. You just do your best to be as original as possible, but you'll still end up sounding like someone. If you want to hear my favorite rip off, try the guitar riff from Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" with John Mellencamp's "Jack and Diane". I'm not sure which songs actually made it onto the show, but at least this gives you an idea of what they picked from. ************************************************** * There's no getting out of your own way...* * -Patty Griffin * * The Patty Griffin Lyrics Archive * ************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Feb 2000 19:52:43 -0500 From: "Greg Pendleton" Subject: MM: Re: Re:Ripping Off Patty > If you want to hear my favorite rip off, try the guitar riff from Tracy > Chapman's "Fast Car" with John Mellencamp's "Jack and Diane". > > Jason ...or how about Steve Miller's "Jet Airliner" stealing the guitar riff from Free's "All Right Now?" Actually, he "stole" it with the band's permission, so I've heard. He actually asked...
