Sure, the stations that are into the "flashbacks of the 80s and 90s" will play "Cornflake Girl" from time to time, but i would not say tori 'got huge.' and like any "sub-culture," if you will, things do go sour. the remaining years the Dead toured the audiences were not like they used to be.... And i certainly can't let "her fans just got stupid" go.....back to what Cristina said, there are always the assholes in every bunch. More of them just came out when she had a few new singles on the radio and when she - dear god - toured with Alanis (and yes, i saw 3 of those 5.5 Week Tour shows and MOST of the jerks there were Alanis fans! oh no....i see the flames now....sorry to the die hard alanis fans....i dig her!) tori fans "getting stupid" isn't an issue....it's more that the 'stupid' people decided to go to the Tori concert and ruin it for the fans. i've met her too!!! ooh...and i met patty at a signing after she played at a local harmony house here in MI. Both of them are just absolutely lovely to the fans....of course, patty had a lot less to deal with in the record store! :) shutting up before you all decide to hate me..... i love you all! really!!!! :) sarah ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Feb 2000 23:42:00 -0600 From: "Jason and Jennifer Burton" Subject: MM: I deserve this Hello folks! I just finally finished reading all 130 + posts in my Patty Griffin folder and feel like I deserve to post now (I always feel I shouldn't post until I'm caught up, lest I repeat what's already been said). What an awesome hour of music was Sessions the other night...2 of my favorite artists in the whole world - Wilco and Patty. I'm curious to hear if there are any new Wilco converts as a result of Patty's appearance? I taped it off of WTTW in Chicago, onto a brand new high quality tape, and the sound was really poor. Anyone else who watched this broadcast have the same experience? I may try and get a better recording when the other PBS station airs it this week. I'm fairly new to this list and dying to get a hold of this rarities tape. Anyone out there up for a trade? I have a pretty good selection of bootlegs of Victoria Williams, Toad the Wet Sprocket, 10,000 Maniacs, Jayhawks, Midnight Oil, Michael McDermott, Vigilantes of Love, Harrod & Funck, and Indigo Girls. E-mail me privately if you're willing to trade. Also a quick advertisement...I run a small internet music collectables site at www.singlecollector.com. I'm kinda low on Patty stuff right now, but I do have a couple copies of a live Seattle radio compilation that has an acoustic version of "Wiggly Fingers". I had been listening to Tori since UTP and had seen her only once on her BFP tour and was SO looking forward to spending another incredible evening with other EWFs and sharing in the experience at an intimate venue before she ventured off to the stadiums. Without getting too much into it, the entire night was a constant barrage of rudeness and aggression which just crystallized with the ensuing fight during Icicle (I don't have the bootleg, but I think that was the song she was singing when this fight started). I was up in the balcony near these idiots and became momentarily frightened (as did Tori; why else would she have asked Joel to go up there and make sure everything was okay?) that the situation would escalate. Thankfully, it didn't, but I'm sure your bootleg doesn't have the various rude comments made to a smoking EWF which nearly resulted in another brawl. However, the sing-along during "Mother" was almost worth driving the 4 hours to Atlanta itself. THAT part of the show seemed to bring everyone back to the whole reason for being there: Tori and her music. I have several Tori boots and I must say the earlier they are, the more respectful the audience is. Actually, the further she is from America, the more respectful the audience is (but that's a whole 'nutha thing). As for Patty, she has a huge following here in Nashville, so every show I've seen her at has been PACKED. I have yet to see her play solo in a 50 seat club so I can't comment on the wondrous intimacy everyone else is gushing over. I will say this about her growing fan base: At an outdoor music festival last year, a few other MM'ers and I grabbed the very front area before Patty started playing. I'm so glad we did because about 3 songs into her set, Patty had a tremendously large audience and I was so glad to see it. Local radio promotes her heavily out here and I hope that other cities will start catching on. I think right now Patty's music is recognized more than her name. Just the other night I was watching some crappy show on WB and "Blue Sky" was used in a commercial. I can't remember what it was advertising, but I do remember being stunned at hearing a Patty song on something other than WRLT. -Cristina ********************************************** "I have never chased the curve. A lot of people will try to dilute you--give your music a nose job or a little bow tie: "Don't perspire now; shave under your arms." But I'm a small vineyard. You know what I mean?" -Tori Amos ********************************************** ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V4 #56 ********************************
