I know, I know, what's taken DAVE so long?? I could care less if someone takes drugs casually, or is a total crackhead, or gets high smoking pot every night. What someone else does is their own business, and if it makes them happy, so be it. If that person happens to be an artist, and this substance helps them (in their opinion) be more creative.... more power to them. If I like a person's music, I'm going to listen to it whether they're a drug addict, or an axe murderer. It's their music I'm listening to. Just because I don't do what they do in their everyday life, doesn't mean I'm not going to enjoy their music. These people however, whether it be musicians, athletes, actors, etc...have to realize that whether they like it or not, they ARE role models. Like it or not, the fact is that a teen-age boy or girl somewhere (to varying degrees) is very impressionable, and imitates how they dress, how they talk, how they walk, what they eat...etc.. Why else is Michael Jordan on the Wheaties Box, have his own shoes, and drink Sprite in commercials?? McDonald's and other companies wouldn't pay celebrities millions of dollars every year to eat/drink/or wear their product on television if it didn't influence people to do the same thing their favorite celebrity is doing. (liquid Coke and powder coke is quite a different thing though.. ) :-) I don't want to single out Tori Amos as being BAD for saying in a magazine that she does drugs. There are athletes and other celebrities every day that get caught for DUI, beating up their wives, beating up fans, carrying a concealed weapon, etc...and that is hurting or potentially hurting others, whereas the actual taking of drugs is only hurting yourself. We have to realize that these people that we look up to are real people, and they make mistakes just like the rest of us. Try putting yourself in some of their shoes..some of them have been filthy rich, and constantly in the public eye ever since they were really still children. I actually had the opportunity to talk to an incredibly good guitarist named Frank Hannon (from the band Tesla) about this very subject about 4 years ago...instant fame at such a young age, and the pressures it puts on you, drug addiction..etc.. He was only 19 when their 1st CD went platinum, and they were headlining arena shows in front of 20,000 people nightly, as well as being on MTV constantly when he was 20. I don't know how well I could handle that now at the age of 25, or how well I could EVER handle it, so I don't want to even pretend or imagine the person I'd be in his position. Who knows if I would have turned to drugs just as he did? Anyway, I'm also beating this dead horse (thanks Kate) :-) My main point is that I don't care what these people do with their lives. If they do so much heroin that they keel over dead, that's their business. I don't want to sound like I don't have a heart, because the people on this list that know me know that that's not true. If I cared about a person who was killing themselves from taking drugs I would do everything in my power to keep them from hurthing themselves. I just believe that celebrities should keep drug use to themselves. It's one thing to do it, and have adults that can look at you and say, Hey! she's on heroin, because she's acting like EVERYONE that takes heroin acts. Or, man..look at his eyes, I wonder how many joints he smoked before he came out on stage? Kids are not likely to pick up on these things...but when they are told, that is a different story. Like it or not, these people are role models. Everyone has their own choices, but if you are a impressionable youngster, and your IDOL uses drugs, and openly admits that he/she does... you can not tell me that you are not going to think that particular drug is a little cooler than you did before they said that. You are at the VERY least going to be much more interested in, and much more likely to experiment with that particular drug to feel what that other person feels. Just my opinion... Greg, I'm THERE man! I'm considering the 1st show at The Fez the night after, if it's not sold out that is. I just don't know if I'm going to be able to swing it or not... it IS Patty solo though, so I'm doing my best to re-arrange my plans. Then there is the issue of parking in NYC. I'm going to need to be at work (in PA) the next day, so I'm going to have to drive from Philly to NYC on Saturday, find a place to park where I can still get my car at 1am, or whenever Patty is done playing. The parking garages that I know of make you pick up your car before then, is there any other option if I need to leave the city that night? Thanks in advance for your help! Once you get to the entry page, enter, click on articles archive in the top left corner menu and scroll down to November 1999. The cosmo article is there among the others. It's fairly brief and the drug comments don't come until the very end. Personally, I think her comments hardly merit this discussion, but judge for yourself... -Cristina http://tori.by.net/ - ------=_NextPart_000_0005_01BF2BD3.42D4CF40 Content-Type: application/octet-stream; name="Tori.by.net.url" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="Tori.by.net.url" [DEFAULT] BASEURL=http://tori.by.net/ [DOC#3#4] BASEURL=http://members.aye.net/~mikewhy/articles.html [DOC#3#4#3#4] BASEURL=http://members.aye.net/~mikewhy/artindex.html [DOC#3#4#3#5] BASEURL=http://members.aye.net/~mikewhy/cosmo1199.html [InternetShortcut] URL=http://tori.by.net/ Modified=C06C0A09052CBF0130 - ------=_NextPart_000_0005_01BF2BD3.42D4CF40-- ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V3 #320 *********************************
