(tank, cut-off khakis and FLAMING RED platform shoes) Although she also looked great at the Sessions taping courtesy some professional help---not that she needed it! On a different note, I was wondering if anyone might know where I might get my hands on a copy of "We Are Water"? I know she never released it, but a live bootleg would be great! If anyone can direct me I'd appreciate it! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 09 Oct 1999 10:12:41 -0400 From: Darren Sweeney Subject: MM: mad mission MISSION!!! MAD MISSIONERS, THIS BALTIMORE MISSIONER IS LOOKING TO FIND SOME PATTI BOOTS. CAN ANYONE OUT THERE HELP ME COMPLETE MY MISSION? DJS ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Oct 1999 11:18:15 EDT From: Sjpielocik@aol.com Subject: MM: Patty-G News: BETTE MIDLER covers Patty! I've already written to Patty and her band informing her of the amazing news, but I wanted to pass this information along to all of the fans. One of Patty's tunes is going to be performed for tens of thousands of people night after night for the next few weeks/months. Last night was the opening night of Bette Midler's "Divine Miss Millenium Tour." In the middle of the second half of an incredible show, Bette began telling a story about how she's been reading the Bible ("the first book, and the sequel"). She related her current life and how she's raising a teenager to how "Jesus and his mom" must have gotten along and how she could just imagine how Mary would leave Jesus' room just the way he'd left it when he went off for a while. She was more emotional than at any other point during the show. Slowly her story finished (the band had been playing the opening chords all along). Then, slowly, she began performing Patty Griffin's "Mary." Needless to say it was incredible. (I think the people I was at the show with were the only people in the sold-out audience who had any idea what the song was or how important it was that Bette was performing it.) Rich backing harmonies on the choruses. Bette almost exactly imitating Patty's "na-na-na's" towards the end of the song. It was a wonderful homage to one of the greatest songwriters of our time...needless to say, the crowd went WILD! She ended by saying that that was the first time EVER that she'd performed that song in public. "Should I sing it again?" she timidly asked (sarcastically after the crowd's amazing response to the song.) Again, the crowd went wild. [For public performance of covers, no permission has to be granted, so I'm not sure if Patty is/was aware that Bette would be performing the song. So here I am passing the information along.] Ta ta for now (and it was good to see everyone at "Sessions" last weekend!). Take care, all of you. I am sure I have worn a couple "what the hell" outfits. I commented on Patty's makeup when she was on the Letterman show and after posting felt really bad about it. I think she's adorable. I think if we were all performers on the list, we'd probably all need a little help in the wardrobe category. Maybe not. I felt bad about my posting after Letterman because I didn't preface it with...and isn't it a shame that someone with Patty's talent even has to think about such things, but a large portion of this industry is about first impressions. Sad but true. That being said, I'm glad she looked nice. - -Sharyn the not-so-flakey bird ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V3 #289 *********************************
