Thanks, Karla Mercyme37@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Oct 1999 11:08:13 EDT From: EveryLittleBit@aol.com Subject: MM: UGH, ignorant people (NPC) As some of you know, I'm an RA this year at school. I joined an RA mailing list because I thought it would be a good way to trade tips, ideas, ways to handle sitations, etc. The other day I had a situation and I wanted some advice, so I worte to them, and some of the responses I got scared the crap out of me. THESE people are looking out for the well-being of teenagers? The situation I had was that I was working the front desk when one of my residents came up and we started talking about the movie Cruel Intentions. Everything was fine until she said "Oh, they didn't have to put in that scene with the girls kissing, it was disgusting." She then went on to say that she "didn't believe in that kind of stuff" and that what they were doing was wrong and made her sick. I told her that I wouldn't tolerate gay bashing on my floor, the same way I won't tolerate people bashing Hispanic people (she's Hispanic and I thought it would ring a chord with her). She said that if the subject comes up she's going to say whatever she wants to say because she thinks it's wrong and disgusting and she doesn't care who hears it from her. I asked the other RAs what I should do about the situation, if it came up again. Most of them said to try to bring in gay speakers, talk to her quietly & privately, etc. But then one kid said << I was brought up in a Christian home. I have come to a personal reason that as a Christian, homosexuality should be condemned. To be crystal clear, I do not condemn the person, I condemn the action. I'm not going to go deeper into all my views on GLBs and what will happen to them unless you ask me to. This is something I believe strongly in. So if you want to, you can say I have a prejudice against GLB persons. Could it be possible that you are a little oversensitive on this issue? And I really don't think you should try to "teach her to love and respect everyone . . ." Forcing your views on someone is quite counterproductive. How do you know she's never questioned this? Isn't this the same close-mindedness you're trying to prevent? Shouldn't we try to avoid stereotypes, yet you are doing the same to her. >> Anyone know when it became close minded to love and respect everyone? So anyway, then I got this next letter (which I bet wouldn't have been written if the girl didn't see the first letter). << From what it sounds like to me, you were bashing her views when you went off on her about it, you could have avoided the whole situation and possibly not made an enemy if you would have simply said "well that is your opinion, please keep it to yourself" instead of ridiculing her by saying she was gay-bashing, or whatever the word is and calling her racist. The situation could have been handled a lot easier. And I agree with Ryan on this, don't push your views on someone either. She was simply stating her opinion, all you had to do was ask her to PLEASE keep her opinion to herself. >> Is it that my parents taught me to love others so well that I'm not seeing that my loving them is wrong ? I'm not going to just sit by and let people bash my family and friends, saying they hate them when they've never met them. What would these RAs do if a gay or lesbian student came to them, unsure of their sexuality? I can just think of the damage that could possibly be caused. They both thought I told her she was gay bashing, which I didn't- I just told her I wouldn't tolerate it on my floor. She said those things at the FRONT DESK of the building, not privately in her room. I still see and talk to her daily, I don't even think she really knew (or cared) I was bothered. We get along fine. Am I missing something here? Oh, please don't write back if you agree with the way all these people feel. I know that people can't help what their religion has taught them, but I'm Catholic and I learned to see past what I decided was men's take on God and learn that nobody can be doing something against God when they're loving someone else (unless they're an axe murderer). If anyone writes to me and tells me I shouldn't have said anything I think I'm going to take out my own axe. Thanks guys... I figured of all people, you would understand. That's sorta' like saying Kenny Vaughn is just a guitar player with Lucinda Williams. For those of you on the east coast who aren't going to sessions (or are you all going? me think's so) go and check out Sharyn w/ the Joe Rathbone band. take care all, ~m michael j. bauer michael.j.bauer@worldnet.att.net ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 01 Oct 1999 11:06:01 -0700 From: hilah@ix.netcom.com Subject: MM: oops! i hope, sorry, and thank you! wow i think i have made a big error and my return address was incorrect the many many times i sent this out so if anyone got this message (i never saw the post since it would reply to an incorrect address) please reply again to hilah@ix.netcom.com. thank you thank you thank you and sorry sorry sorry. i have a last minute request please does anyone have an unused plus one? i have managed at this zero hour to actually make it from the west to the east throwing all caution to the wind and tower air. i have tix for two, me and bestest, and yet there is another friend there who is making this possible for me in a way, a wonderful person who i gave lwg to way back when and now she knows etc and if there is anyway i can get her in as well we would o so much appreciate it. i promise she will be a fine addition to the audience of us extraordinarily happy ones who are still probably in a little disbelief that this is actually happening: seeing/hearing patty whilst no people are talking during songs no pushing and bumping no bellowing drunks however charming. dont know nothin about takes and tv and whatever and hope not to be standing and how i've dreamed of this opportunity. and so email me if you pretty please can help. i'll not be leaving here until 1am the day of the show. so i'll be the very thankful to be there sleepy person in line if you want to say hello. seth. just reaching out into cyberspace hoping someone can offer me a clue as to what i'm doing wrong re posting. thank you! seth. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Oct 1999 15:54:00 -0400 From: "Perlman, Judith" Subject: MM: NY Show Are we all doing the M&M thing?
