I can't hear Patty!!!" The band may rock, and I love loud music, but the deal here is a singer. It's not the Wallflowers, it's not Limp Bizcuit, it's Patty who wowed people with a CD recorded in a hotel room with just her and her acoustic guitar. I remember seeing Eric Johnson many years ago, and a drunk in the crowd was screaming, "TURN IT UP!!!" And finally Eric said, "Turn it up? We're just now learning how to turn it down!" (And if you EVER get the chance to see this guy, go.) Ok, all I'm going to say. The band drowns her out. Period. It may be cool in a 300 seat club with beer and nachos, but for exposure, you got to put your best foot forward, which in this case is Patty's voice. Maybe the song choice wasn't the best. I like it, but then I already like Patty. I think it's a good song, but maybe others here are right. Oh, just a quick comment, someone said we shouldn't post bad reviews and pick things apart just because we can. All this negativity. I have to disagree. If this list is to have serious conversations about Patty, you have to have differing opinions. If it's to be a gushing, "Patty is my goddess" kind of place, well, that gets real boring, real fast. No one has said she sucks, but some thought the national exposure shows could have come off better, and I feel badly for her that both shows I saw were pretty forgettable. I've had a few private emails, and they were good to read. Some agreed, some didn't. That's cool. That's conversation. I know at least a couple of the band guys read this list, and hope they don't take anything as a slam against them, (ok, virtuoso comment, but I don't think it was meant in a "they suck" vein). There's nothing wrong with actuallly backing a singer. She's the reason for the band. Ok, that's it. Carry on. john in sumner wa ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. Dont attack me just because they arent virtuosos... that is not *my* fault. And as for false credibilty, for someone who decides to address me with animosity, then there will be no impressing them no matter WHO i am. I could be a fast-food worker, but it doesnt take away from the fact that I am right. One more thing Joe, Reread my original post--i COMPLIMENTED them, not insulted them. And as for Mike Baker... i was told he was "out all week" and by the time i got a hold of him he told me he had already gotten the players he needed... (i was late). Plus he wanted them to be based in Nashville for rehearsal purposes. And I can almost guarantee that I was one of many people who wanted to suggest some players. And for the record, I happened to love both performances on the tv shows in spite of Patty being to far back in the mix, and if you were to read the digests, you will find that I was one of the original people who suggested Blue Sky as a single release, so get off my case. Mimi, You shouldn't be so upset when someone opines that your reasoning is less than "virtuoso" caliber. I mean, some of your comments are good, even adequate. Don't get pissed at me, either. I'm actually defending you. Even paying you a complement. She also sent me 3 live shows and 2 mixed tapes (What a sweet woman eh!). I'm wondering if anyone else is interested in trading with me? I have lots to trade. Please email me directly. If this has upset anyone...Sorry. Vanessa :-) and anyone else interested. This list is certainly also a "trade list". It was set up for fans of Patty to talk, trade her music...whatever. Within reason, taste, respect of the artist and fellow list members, legalities, yadda, yadda, yadda, it's a "do what you want list" Mike - list "owner" - - * The Patty Griffin/Mad-Mission@smoe List Homepage is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/pattyg/pattyg.htm * * Rachel Martin's Patty Griffin Lyrics Archive is at * http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3079/patty.html * * Jerry Zigmont's Flaming Red - A Patty Griffin Website is at * http://members.tripod.com/PattyGriffin * * Katie Peterson's Patty Griffin Guitar Tabs Archive is at * http://members.tripod.com/~Lifey/patty.html * * DuckOfPrey or WhyADuck55 on AOL and/or AOL Instant Messenger ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Jul 1999 19:25:53 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: Re: MM: I know this isn't a trade list but...more live Patty PLEASE! >Well, since trading is a go-ahead, i would *love* to trade with people for >some of those rarities....or a 2:1... i have both "Living with Ghosts" >and "Flaming Red" but I would really like to get my hands on some good >quality unreleased and rare Patty... > >I have A LOT of Tori Amos, some Jewel and some others....and I'm always >good for a 2:1. > >Let me know if anyone is interested! 2 for 1 trading is considered profiteering and is one form of trading that is not condoned on the list. If anyone must do two for ones or other forms of profiteering, please conduct that offlist and not onlist. It is preferred that onlist trading involve Patty's music in at least part and that it be open trading or a "I'll make a copy for you even though you have nothing to trade" kind of thing.
