Hi guys, I'm not sure if this is my first post to the list, and I sure hope it's not because the content of it will give you a very skewed picture of me! I saw Patty on both Conan and Letterman and because of my geographically isolated location (i.e. I live in Australia), these are the only opportunities I've had to see Patty perform "live". I think I'll stay out of the whole quality of the performance debate and just skip right to the really shallow and superficial statement: Who is Patty's guitarist! The one wearing the bandana around his forehead! Hubba hubba! I know the band is on the list, so will the aforementioned be upstanding and identify himself!!! A name would be good! Jess Inglis - -- You don't need a weather man To know which way the wind blows - - Bob Dylan, "Subterranean Homesick Blues" I'm in love with the world Through the eyes of a girl Who's still around the morning after - - Elliott Smith, "Say Yes" There are plenty of people who pray for peace But if praying were enough it would have come to be - - Jewel, "Life Uncommon" While Eeyore frets and Piglet hesitates and Owl pontificates ...Pooh just is - - The Tao of Pooh ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Jul 1999 22:52:32 EDT From: UMCaner74@aol.com Subject: MM: Re: Letterman performance Hi guys, First off, in agreement with Rachel.... I've NEVER seen Patty look as wonderful as she did last night wearing that outfit! Her performance of the song was as she said, at least 10 times better than on the other talk shows. The mix was great, and it was the 1st time (on the talk shows) that they captured the magic of the song as it is performed at her shows! It sounded JUST like it does at one of her concerts, instead of sounding like most songs do on talk shows. Most bands DO in fact sound not so good on talk shows, and Patty's band kind of sounded like all the other bands that play these shows on Conan. Last night was CERTAINLY a different story. I've been over my feelings of favoring a song like Change, Wiggley Fingers, Tony, or Mary instead of playing Blue Sky on these talk shows, so I'm not even going to get into that again... Anyway, I hope most of you enjoyed the performance! It IS so incredibly beautiful to see Patty in front of a national Televison audience, when just over 3 years ago I was seeing her in clubs and absolutely NOONE but myself even ackknowledged that she was there. Keep Rockin' Patty Jean! They don't do the mix that you hear...they just play the instruments. Myself, I thought the mix last night was great. The bass could have been down just a bit, and the guitar up just a little, but it was alot better than what I've heard at actual live shows before, so I'm NOT complaining. Dave ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Jul 1999 23:19:04 EDT From: UMCaner74@aol.com Subject: Re: MM: Guitarless? ...guitarist question One more post..sorry! Patty never plays guitar on Blue Sky. The only songs on FR that she plays guitar on live are FR, Change, Goodbye, and Go Now. She of course, plays piano on Peter Pan. She may play guitar on One Big Love as well, but I've only seen her play that one live once, and I really can't remember. She DID play guitar on Mary before the band joined her. (when she was still a solo artist) Sorry for another post, but I just wanted to let everyone know that it wasn't really anyone's decision for her to NOT play guitar on the talk shows. She never plays guitar on Blue Sky. To Jess from Australia, Patty's guitarist's name is Doug Lancio. I THINK he's from Nashville, Tennessee... but I don't think he's one of the band members that is on the list..just letting you know. I could be wrong, but I think the bass player and the keyboard player are the 2 on the list. :-) Take care everyone..sorry again for the multiple posts! I have problems having more than one thought occupy my brain at the same time! Patty's on in 10 minutes and we're on Interstate 75! No phone, nowhere to stop, and still 45 minutes outside of Toledo. I felt powerless. And it doesn't have a happy ending. I missed Blair Witch (sold out days in advance and only in 6 cities nationwide) AND I missed Patty. So I had a wooooooonderful day yesterday!!! Ugh. ~>:-I John ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Jul 1999 01:21:41 -0400 (EDT) From: "Patty's Band" Subject: MM: Re: mad-mission-digest V3 #211 Hey all you MMer's, Frank the Bass player here. Very interesting reading all your different opinions of our Letterman performance...I just wanted to let you know that we had a blast playing Blue Sky and although it would not have been any of ours pick (song-wise)we feel really good about our performance of it. The imperfections, are the beauty (or not, all depending on your view point)of a live show. If you want perfect, you'd probably be a Celine Dion fan not a Patty Griffin fan. Anyway, I'm glad you were watching and I look forward to many more opportunities helping Patty please and and anger and entertain all of you. Thanks!
