I'm a huge fan, and I was pretty disappointed with the performance. Maybe it's because I think "Blue Sky" is a middling song ("Tony" would have been the much better choice for a single), or that I'm disappointed that Patty didn't play guitar, or that she seemed nervous and held back on her voice. But I was not very impressed. One thing I've got to say: Dave Letterman is a class act. I was really moved by his statement about the sadness of the weekend, and how they're still going to do the show. He seemed very sincere. - -- Mark - -- Mark Miazga e-mail: miazgama@pilot.msu.edu 302 Mason Hall, MSU East Lansing, MI 48825 (517) 355-2106 http://www.msu.edu/~miazgama Voicemail: (517) 355-9380 Program Coordinator of The Common Grounds Coffeehouse. She seems to slowly but surely be getting comfortable with national TV! It wasn't perfect- a lot of the time I felt like the guy singing backup with her was louder than she was, and he was having trouble harmonizing, which put her in an odd spot- but overall it was 10 times better than it's been on other shows. I personally hate that song anyway. Well, hate's maybe too strong- but I STILL feel that if they let her release a song like Change she'd be doing a lot better. I'm still torn betweeen wanting her to remin in obscurity so I can see her at little concert halls, or having her hit the big time like she deserves. One thing I do know- the outfit she wore last night ROCKED. it was very odd and rock-star-y. I loved it! Now you've got me curious. Far as I'm concerned, please do go on and on about what you thought! I've never been to Lilith Fair but it's coming my way. I'm very new to this list, so I haven't gotten a sense of how strictly the topics are defined, but since Patty Griffin plays at them sometimes, and some of the artists there are certainly in a similar genre, it's not that far afield, is it? By the way, while I'm new to the list, I've been a fan of Patty Griffin for over 2 years, when I first heard "Let Him Fly" on the radio and went out and bought the CD. I've been to two shows, one acoustic pre-"Flaming Red" and one this past fall with the band. She's in my pop pantheon these days--I respond to the music, the intelligent lyrics and her intensity. - --Helen ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Jul 1999 10:07:11 -0700 From: "Stephen J. I saw Patty at The Bayou in D.C. about 8 months ago, and it's the absolute best show I have ever seen. Unfortunately The Bayou is gone, for a shopping mall (like Georgetown needs more of these), and she hasn't been anywhere near where I live (Raleigh, NC) again. I did manage to meet her after the show, and she was very nice and signed my "Flaming Red" cd. I've been obsessed with her music ever since. If Patty doesn't make the big time, she will always be big time to me. I thought the first half of the song, she was completely out of tune, not to mention the ever-present balance situation. WHEN is someone going to learn how to turn down the freakin' guitars? This is so frustrating, because Patty is so incredibly talented and wonderful. To see this opportunity squandered is infuriating! I don't know who's making the decisions about choice of song, choice of instrumentation (i.e. Patty not playing guitar), balance, etc. But the final product was so much less than it could and should have been. I'm glad I forgot to remind my friends to watch her on Letterman, because that performance would not have impressed anyone I can think of. Please don't mistake my frustration here as a lack of support for Ms. Griffin. I really want her to succeed! I love her music and want her to continue doing what she loves for a long time to come. But she's had three chances now to reach fairly large audiences, and in my opinion, those opportunities have been wasted. I don't think this is the right song, I don't think this is the right band (or maybe it's the sound engineer?), and I don't think it was the right decision to not have Patty play. I really hope record sales skyrocket and I'm proven wrong here... Sorry for the negativity, but I just had to put that out there. :) Dave On Tue, 20 Jul 1999 EveryLittleBit@aol.com wrote: > Compared to the other TV appearances, last night was GREAT. I just finished reading all the comments on the Letterman show performance. I have to say that I was very disappointed. I think Patty is the best singer /songwriter in the world, but if I had never heard her before, and last night was the first time, I would have never thought about her again. I feel horrible to say that because she is my absolute idol, but something has got to change! I totally agree that it should be a different song! And, not to be rude, but I think she is going to have to spiff herself up a little more. I thought she looked best on the Kilborn show, and sounded best on Conan. I think she is so adorable, but maybe should wear her make-up different or something. Does anyone know how old she is? Well, I'm sorry if this was too much criticism. Who I am I to judge? I really hope that was the decision of some pencil pusher, and not Patty's choice! Let's just hope that doesn't become a habit. I agree with Dave and others that the vocals were out of tune. I don't necessarily blame that on her though. A lot of bands that do those shows have out of tune vocals, and I think it must be the mix in the monitors. They simply cannot hear themselves. Let's face it, they have one song to get the sound right, and usually that is one song too little. I thought the band did a nice job. Everything was real tight, and I thought they did their best to stay out of the way of her vocals. A second take would be nice in a perfect world. Hmmm. I trust Patty on this one, but I think the guitar is an integral part of her musical persona, and to lose it makes her look naked. Oh well. She still rocks. We know that, and that counts for something. Oh bother. - - Scott _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web.
