She only did 5 songs, "Mary" was one of them and she told the story about her Grandmother and that it was actually written for her. But she was much more scared than on the Late Late Show (which by the way, kicked butt although it was way too short). I got to meet her here in Memphis and she is the sweetest thing! As a fellow musician, we discussed writing techniques and she was very sweet - and quite shy. Anyway, I've been on this list forever, and never posted until now. I'm just glad Blue Sky was the release - it's the most radio-favorable (except "Goodbye" which would do great on country radio) and hopefully she'll get the attention she deserves then we can all say "I HEARD HER FIRST!" He's fantastic and has this whole unique sound with his music without it being "out there". Give him a listen. It shouldn't be too difficult to find him in stores - he's only got one album out. take care all, V ps the album is self-titled ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Jun 1999 14:44:28 -0700 (PDT) From: ruby maroon Subject: MM: Maybe Patty doesnt wanna be famous?? You know I had a thought, do you think it's possible that Patty doesnt really want fame? I mean the kind of fame that say someone like Jewel has? I mean we all know how shy she is, maybe she's happy with the way things are now and not really into being a big star? I dont know it was just a thought. Her Management sure doesnt seem to be doing such a great job of it all. Hell, we're the ones that should be her manager. Sorry no flames, just looking at reality. Well, funny thing, but, I originally got into Patty with Living with Ghosts. Well time slipped by and Patty slipped into the back of the CD pile. Flaming Red came out and I didn't blink an eye. Never bought it. Then, one night I was flipping around the TV in the wee hours and came across Patty on Conan singing Blue Sky. Both the SONG and the SINGER immediately caught my attention. I had no ideas who it was, but I was hooked. After the song was over and Conan said Patty Griffin, I thought, wow-why didn't I get Flaming Red? Ran to the record store the very next afternoon and snatched up my copy of Flaming Red, and LOVED the whole CD. Made me a major fan. Got back into Living with Ghosts, too. So, Blue Sky wasn't such a bad choice after all! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Jun 1999 18:12:49 -0500 From: "James P / Cristina M" Subject: MM: Patty on that weird Kilborn show I just got through watching my recording of Patty's performance. I enjoyed it even though Patty did look extremely nervous and uncomfortable (especially when Kilborn asked her about the song and Austin). Why does Patty not show off her guitar chops on TV? I don't understand why she's not playing her instrument on these performances. Maybe she's afraid she'll break a string on national television and doesn't want to deal with the pressure? Anyway, I did notice that once Kilborn said goodbye, Patty shook his hand and started to get up. You could tell that he quickly told her to sit back down and wait till they get off camera cause she immediately sat back down to wait out the applause. I thought it was kinda cute. I guess she couldn't wait to get the hell out of there! Patty sounded great, but I agree with (almost) everyone else about the choice of "Blue Sky." I think that Patty, acoustic, singing "Change" would have just rocked the house and put Kilborn in his place. -Cristina ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Jun 1999 20:51:37 EDT From: Farfromnow@aol.com Subject: Re: MM: Craig Kilborn Appearance, some thoughts... I agree totally!!! I like Blue Sky also, but it doesn't capture her strong vocal ability in my opinion. I would love to hear Change or Wiggly fingers because she REALLY gets in to them, and you can't help to be captivated by that. I think if she had to do the Kilborn show acoustic she should have done Tony, but I guess I shouldn't complain. She was still awesome...Of Course! Anyway, I just thought I'd add my 2 cents worth. Later! Man "Change" rocks the house! She sings it w/conviction and soul and it's just such an awesome song whenever she sings it, I get chills! I would love whatever Patty does, but I hope she sings it on Letterman!! Oh boy, cant wait for that!!! Ruby _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? To the casual listener, you think, OK, she has a great voice, but it's just an upbeat, good vibe type rock song. Nothing really uniquely Patty, that will set her apart from all the other late night talk show performers. >> I totally agree with Dave on this point. I am a relatively new Patty fan, and if "Blue Sky" had been the first song I heard, I would not have given her a second listen. It is not by any means my favorite. I think "Tony" or "Mary" would be a good choice and are real attention grabbers. "Change" is another one I would love to see her sing. I was really pretty disappointed in her choice of songs for the Kilborn show and wasn't even too upset when my VCR stopped recording in the middle of the song. Oh well, I am still a Patty fan, and I don't suppose I have to love everything she does. Last Friday night I was in the car with a friend, on our way to the movies, and I put in Flaming Red, and the tape happened to be on Blue Sky. The friend I was with instantly loved the song, and bought FR that night at the Best Buy next to the movie theater. I LOVE Blue Sky, and I would rather have Patty sing the worst version of Blue Sky on the planet as opposed to Tony. I hate Tony. I'm sure I'll get flamed, but I can't stand it. I liked it at first, it was one of my favorites on the album, in fact, but I skip past it every single time I listen to the album. That's really funny! I had no idea she was interviewed at all! For viewers in Austin, i swear to god there was 20 minutes of commercials before patty came on... and when she came on and sang it cut back to commercials again, and then they started showing the tv show Inside Edition. No closing credits or departure goodbyes or anything. That's really screwed up. Did anyone else experience this? Suck.
