We just got into LA from Temecula. We played a show with Jimmy Vaughn and Johnny Lang on an Indian Reservation out in the desert. Anyway, we're pretty tired so we just wanted to say hi for now. Hopefully in the future we can occasionally correspond with all you Mad Missioners out there about...well whatever. Okay, cool. For those of you not familiar with the cruise, Delbert McClinton does a cruise boat every winter and lines up a bunch of acts for a week long trip. I've never been but hear its lots of fun. It sails out of the Port of Houston first week of January, with Cancun, Cozumel, Isla Mujures as ports of call. We went online at www.delbert.com for info, and looks like the cheap cabins are already sold out, but middle class cabin are still available. Radio Patty just finished a brief appearance on Channel 103.1 FM here in Los Angeles (the same station I scored tickets from for tonight's "private" show). She played "Blue Sky," "OBL" and that Ann Peebles (sp?) song that goes "feel like breaking up somebody's home." I thought "Blue Sky" was spectacular unplugged. I enjoyed it MUCH more than either the FR version or the Conan O'Brien performance. She seemed to struggle just a little with "One Big Love" and admitted that she and the band hadn't played it in awhile. Also, in a strange twist, she admitted to being intimidated whenever she sees Emmylou Harris, even though they've now known each other for three years! Consolation for those on the list who babbled when they met PG! Larry I in LA ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jun 1999 15:38:00 -0400 From: Amy Subject: MM: Patty on the radio Hello! I haven't written in a while (yeah, yeah, so I'm a lurker), but today I feel compelled. First of all thanks to Pamela for the heads up about PG on 103.1 in Los Angeles. I was able to listen to it on the Real Audio while I was at work -- a nice lift to a rather run-of-the-mill afternoon. The program was short but sweet. Patty was gracious and full of laughter - -- seemed to be in a great mood. She and the band played three songs (Blue Sky, One Big Love and Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody's Home) and made small talk w/ the dj. 'Breaking' was awesome, Patty absolutely wailed. I know this sounds weird, but I felt so proud of her when she sang that song -- like, "You go girl! Show those people how to really sing the blues!" She kinda reminded me of Bonnie Raitt. Anyway, when the dj introduced OBL, I almost wished they'd play something from LWG. After all, they've played the hell out of OBL on the radio where I live (not that that's a bad thing). Also, it's not my favorite song on Flaming Red. Boy was I surprised! I got goosebumps! Her voice was ON IT and the band backed her perfectly. The only odd thing was the dj. Now, I know it's not easy to interview someone. I'm trying to get my masters in journalism right now, so believe me, I know interviews can be terrifying (I personally hate them, but that's a whole other headache). BUT -- the dj asked a really downer question followed by a really dumb question. First he asked about "Sweet Lorraine" and whether Patty had a tough childhood. This question is not a bad one for a longer, more in-depth interview, but for a short, in-studio radio show? Hmmm -- methinks it's a bit too deep. Patty kinda skirted the question, said that her childhood was no worse than anyone else's. . . Then, the dj follows up with a question about some guy's dog being recorded on one of the tracks on FR. Whoa! Talk about shifting gears! Anyway, that's just my take on the show. I strongly suggest anyone who missed it to try to catch the rebroadcast later tonight. You might want to start tapping in early -- I had some trouble with 103.1's server. I guess lots of people were trying to get a "stream." BTW -- they said Patty's drummer is named Billy Beard. Is that right? Might he be related to the ZZ Top guy -- I think Frank Beard is his name? Anyone? Anyone? Maybe someone from Patty's Band can answer if you're out there. Also, I just got my tix to see Patty @ Lilith Fair in Cincinnati in August. Will anyone else be there? That's all I have to say about that. (I think some people might kind of know who I am from other lists where I use a different address - locisima@hotmail.com) I will be at the Cincinnati show. I actually have front row tickets and backstage passes! So hopefully I'll get to talk to Patty or something. I'm also going to the Columbus show the day before, so I'll get to see her 2 days in a row. I've only seen her perform once before, at the Lucinda Williams show in Cincy. He used to work for alterna-schlock station Y-107 here in L.A. and he was actually somehow worse there. Very condescending to his audience, bordering on arrogant, and basically just annoying. I think he brought up Sweet Lorraine because he fancies himself a "lyrics guy" who can shed light on them for the rest of us dullards. And I'm with you on the "so how was you childhood?" question. WAY out of line. I think Patty has done enough interviews in the last few years to know how to handle even the worst of them with grace and aplomb, which she did.
