It's not JUST the lyrics that get me but the emotion that Patty puts into them. I'm just hoping and praying that one day I will find love like the one described in this song. I'm going to just cut and paste the lyrics from Rachel's Patty Lyrics archive page to make it easier...I'm hoping she doesn't mind since she's SO COOL... We Are Water My friend, my friend, you are traveling So many secrets are unraveling Some other picture's coming into view I seen the water washing over you And the water's speaking now, it speaks your name I hear it talking to me Sometimes when it rains Telling me a story of joy or pain But I've got no regrets baby, I've got no shame 'Cause we are water We flow and flow I feel you pouring through Every inch of my soul and I really must tell you this Baby, before you go We are water We flow and flow I am a river baby, I've got plenty of time I don't know where I'm going I'm just following the lines There's just no telling where this river will flow I got no choice in the matter, baby, I just go where it goes I'm making my bed tonight Right under this cloud Sometimes the lightening's so frightening Sometimes the thunder's so loud Still, I know this tide is always kissing my heels Someimes I think I'm drowning in all these things that I feel And we are water We flow and flow I feel you pouring through Every inch of my soul and I really must tell you this Baby, before you go We are water We are water We are water We flow and flow Out on the beach today, I did not find One single footstep that we left behind So I went swimming in the deep blue sea And I could feel that water all around me 'Cause we are water We flow and flow I feel you pouring through Every inch of my soul and I really must tell you this Baby, before you go We are water, we are water We are water, we are water We are water, we are water We are water We flow and flow We flow and flow Ok, I'm off to work now..hope you all had a nice day! ALTHOUGH, i'm surprised that every response to this quesiotn (that i read) said PM'sH!! i mean, i *LOVE* those first 4 lines, and the way she sings them is soooo plaintive and melancholy, but hte rest of the song (i must admit.. ) kind of bugs me... i mean, it's a good song, but not a fav.. but those opener lines.. wow... gets me every time. also is the quiet verse of mad mission... this isn't exactly hte right words, but... "sometimes you find yourself, flying low at night flying blind and looking for, any kind of light.." *i* find that the Way patty sings the words often very much affects how i feel about them... like the actual words might not stand on their own as amazing poetry all hte time, but w/ her emotion and feeling and whatever came before and after in the song that creates the moment? THAT leads me to fall in love w/ a lyric... just MHO, chris ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1999 06:42:29 -0800 (PST) From: Wendy J Subject: Re: MM: fav lyrics ...Loving this question! the line that kills me everytime and sometimes gives me the shivers is in "tony," when she belts out, "I knew that story, I was sitting right behind you." to me, it's a great reminder that no matter what, we are not alone, and that no matter how "unique" we think our pain or suffering is, someone else feels or has felt it enough to understand. all we gotta do is reach out. - --- Jaime Jones wrote: > > Since everyone was so responsive to the "lights > out" question, I thought > > I'd throw a question out there: > > > > What is your favorite Patty Griffin lyric(s) and > why? This was a really hard one... Much harder than I thought it would be. I started out trying to pick a few lines from my favorite songs, and ended up with way too many... I guess I like almost ALL of them:-) I did narrow it down to a favorite theme for Patty lyrics... She has lots of empathetic, "tragic" type lyrics that have helped me through. I love You Never Get What You Want, because I think it is very true, and very funny. I like Sweet Lorraine, because even thought Lorraine meets with lots of adversity, she manages to make a life for herself... I will have to say though that Patty's theme of hopefulness, and enthusiasm for life is very uplifting for me. So, picking a single verse, I had to choose the following from Mad Mission: It's a mad mission But I got the ambition Mad, mad mission sign me up The lesson I have been reminded of from this exercise is that Patty has some really awesome lyrics! I can't wait for her to write some more for us:-))) Thanks for bringing this one up, Cristina! Lee in Atlanta What is your favorite Patty Griffin lyric(s) and why? I think this is brilliant. It's maybe not the most touching thing she's written, but it paints a huge, clear picture in just a few words, which is what I like about good poetry. - -john ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Apr 1999 07:55:02 PST From: "Shelley Miller" Subject: Re: MM: patty question >What is your favorite Patty Griffin lyric(s) and why? This thread has me way too interested to lurk so I'll come forth for the second time in two days!! One of the reasons that I dig Patty so much is cuz' of her ability to express herself so well lyrically, so I don't know that I can pick just one. Top five for anyone who's interested: 1. Every Little Bit (seems to be a general consensus, huh?) 2. Nobody's Crying (Wishing Well---gives me the chills everytime) 3. Goodbye 4. Boxes (there are layers here) 5. We Are Water Seems to me that Patty can write well about just about anything..... For anyone who wants to check out Patty's lyrics they can do so at Rachel's amazing lyrics archive. I think it's because Patty writes these amazing lines that are not only beautiful by themselves, but also manage to relate to your life, so when you hear them you think of a past relationship, or your parents, or a fishing trip when you were little. Since I do the lyrics archive, I'm continually amazed with how great Patty is as a songwriter. My favorites : "Mamma says God tends to every little skinny sheep so count your ribs and say your prayers and get to sleep" --Poor Man's House "Got a stellar reputation As the star that never fell As the train that left the station As the secret that no one could ever tell" --Go Now "Today my heart is big and sore it's tryin' to push right through my skin I won't see you anymore I guess that's finally sinkin' in 'Cause you can't make somebody see By the simple words you say All their beauty from within Sometimes they just look away " --Goodbye "One day we'll be a pile of ashes For the best of time, it passes So take your hand off my knee Do you know what it means to be One more girl on the stage Just one more ass that got stuffed in some jeans Just one more day that you don't find true love No, you don't know what it means" --One More Girl "Oh I once thought to ask for God's mercy I can't stand aching anymore They were only making angels In the snow in the middle of a war The blood of these lambs speaks of the darkness And the blood of these lambs speaks of the rage Yes the blood of these lambs is rolling to the sea It's writing your history on every single page" --Shells "In an envelope, inside his coat Is a chain I wore, around my throat Along with, a note I wrote Said "I love you but, I don't even know why" - -and- "May you dream you are dreaming, in a warm soft bed And may the voices inside you that fill you with dread Make the sound of thousands of angels instead Tonight where you might be laying your head" Wishing Well/Nobody Crying I went overboard, and kinda listed my favorite verses instead of my favorite line... but hell, who can blame me ?
