I work for a division of Time Warner, plus I spent three years working in the music industry, so I'm pretty familiar with a lot of performers and their labels. As much as I would like to hear more Patty on TV, I somehow doubt they were playing her on a Warner show... Although, maybe they did play her but did not credit her at the end precisely because she is not a Warner artist... If anyone can refute this, please do! Not true, actually. Some of the shows, like Dawson's Creek, are making a serious point of buying independent/new/trendy music to supply that cutting-edge feel (sorely lacking in the writing and the acting, from the one episode I saw a few weeks ago). Our band Pawnshop's music has been cleared for possible use in Dawson's Creek; a few weeks back Trina Hamlin had an extensive tune on there, as did Moxie, another local independent artist here in New York. It's my understanding in turn that there is essentially no meaningful connection between the record company arm and anything else that Warner does. The WB shows are produced independently, in any case, and there is no savings in using Warner artists; the musicians who record on Warner must be paid just like other musicians for television use... As to the snippet at the end of Dawson's Creek showing album covers of the musicians who've had cuts on the show: I believe that those are paid advertisements. None too cheap, either! I just know that the bulk of artists at the end are in fact Warner artists... And you'd be surprised what kind of distribution deals are out there for the smaller labels. It all ends up as money in Warner's pocket eventually... Don't get me wrong I'm a Time Warner employee, so it's gonna help me support OTHER artists!
