Virgin post as I just recently was exposed to Patty. Last night I saw Mary Arden Collins perform at a venue much too small for her talent. Anyway, as my subject states, Ms. Collins played a cover of a Patty Griffin song, the title of which I am unfamiliar. It was truly great. Mary Arden Collins is an extremely talented singer/songwriter/guitarist (with band) who deserves global exposure. If one person from this list gives Ms. Collins a listen and becomes a fan, it's not enough! Well, what did you expect me to say? One person won't make a difference. Oh, sorry, did that come out. Anywho, I've taken the recommendations recently from several lists and have discovered and enjoyed some great new music from Patty, Heather Nova, Chantal Kreviazuk, Emm Gryner, Bic Runga, and now Mary Arden Collins. Music continues to surprise, fascinate, thrill, and just move me. That's why I seek the good stuff. > ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1999 19:24:55 EST From: Rudgetty@aol.com Subject: MM: I made it in..one small step for me, one large leap for womankind Well, here was the sitch. As I told you, I was going to go and listen through the walls, but when I got there, a gaurdian angel was sitting outside with me, smoking a ciggarette and waiting for Miss williams to finish. I began to talk to her, telling her how I had no tickets and was planning on putting a glass to the door to hear my fiery Patty. She was this way too cute old lady (well, she wasn't really that old, just aged...primed...i dont know, she was older than me), and she told me that she had bought an extra ticket and was not going to use it. After hearing this, the heavens opened and swallowed me whole. (burp) I got to go see Patty and cute old lady didn't make me pay, though I tried many a-time to slip the money in her purse. I missed most of Lucinda's set, and as Patty was an "afterthought" (as it was put in the paper) she played at 8:30 after the all mighty and powerful Lucinda Williams. I didn't get Williams' groove for some reason, it may have just been the whole resentment thing I had going on. Or, oh yeah, the fact that my dad is a big fan...two major turn offs for me. So, I didn't dig Lucinda, and waited (not so) patiently for Patty to come out and rock. And she did, surely. With the stage lined in (flaming) red candles, and her bopping head, strumming crazily, while her beaver-like band mates tried to keep up....I loved every second. It was, however, shorter which dissapointed myself, and cute old lady. But, I felt ungrateful, as I was in the same building, breathing Patty's air, hearing her wail...that was enough for me. But, it would have been lots cooler if it was longer. Hey there is always next time. Thanks guys...thats my story..enjoy! - -Kate ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 08:13:19 +1000 From: "Tara Magdalinski" Subject: MM: One Big Love Hi people, This may be old news, but I just got back from overseas and the first part of my trip (in November last year) was to the US. As I settled back into my compfy (?!) seat on a United Airlines flight, I popped my headphones on and started to dooze, only to be ripped back into consciousness when ONE BIG LOVE came on over the headphones. I recognised the familiar opening strains and couldn't believe it!!! I ripped open the flight magazine and sure enough - there was Patty's name!!! Well, maybe making it to an aeroplan's play list is akin to "making it" to elevator music, but generally they only lay well-known things, so the future bodes well for Patty! By the way, in case any of you remember my rather harsh comments on Flaming Red last year - I TAKE IT ALL BACK - it took a while but the album certainly grew on me, to the extent I think I even play it more than LWG (is that possible???). Have a great day!! Tara ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1999 19:10:58 -0800 (PST) From: Heather Webster Subject: MM: party o' 5 Hey, did anyone watch Party of Five tonight. Well, I am only seen it maybe one or two other nights, but tonight, I happened to catch the last bit. Well, they played an amazing version of Peter Pan with only piano, I think, and our lovely Patty. Wow, I can't believe I didn't record it. It was so great, but I had no Patty fans around so I had to say, "That is Patty Griffin, the one I am always raving about who happened to sign a poster/flat for Flaming Red to me!!!" Okay, enough of that. If anyone recorded it and wants to trade for a live show or something else, I have many Patty boots thanks to Lamia, Steve, Jessica and a few others. Have a nice evening!!
