I think this is absolutely foolish since one would think that FR would win her a lot of new fans who want to then purchase her first album. I guess record companies don't track things like that... I guess they only look at sales. What ashame. - ------------------------- David Lewis Digital & Print Media Design dlewis@hfx.andara.com - ------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Sep 1998 15:02:16 -0400 From: "Perlman, Judith" Subject: MM: Tony Just wondering what people think: did you get the impression that Tony was harassed or teased at school? Or that he heard people talking disparagingly about homosexuals? Or that he just had a negative self-image, for whatever reason, the climate he grew up in and/or his personal problems? I'm interested in peoples' thoughts. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Sep 1998 13:08:52 -0600 From: Tim Blackburn Subject: MM: RE: Tony one other question I would also like to know is how could she of written a song so powerful. Did she live through it or did she write from reading it somewhere, or did this happen to one of her friends. Gay teens feel extremely isolated, and, therefore, are subject to extreme anxiety and depression about their identities. They feel as if they are alone alone and have no one or nowhere to turn to. For more information on gay-related teen suicide contact your local chapter of PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays). Thank you to Patty Griffin for bringing a much ignored subject to public forefront. Patty is the best. ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: MM: Tony Author: "Perlman Judith" at internet Date: 9/8/98 3:02 PM Just wondering what people think: did you get the impression that Tony was harassed or teased at school? According to Patty, the song is about self-absorbtion...not necessarily true events. I just started school ( after going away to school for the first time) and my new/old computer didn't have a modem. Luckily, I have one now, and I'm trying to get back in the fold of email things as well as handling all my school work and the evil hours I'm working the front desk at my dorm ( I have to work midnight to 4 AM tonight !). Hopefully I'll be updating the Patty lyrics page soon, though... I have one new song to put up, as well as a collaboratino with the Guitar Tabs Archive (all the songs that have tabs will have a link to the tabs at the beginning of the song). I'll also try to update the tour dates... at this point I'm so out of it I don't even know if she's still touring. I hope everyone's lives are going well, and thanks for not kicking my ass... Does anyone know it ? Thanks... Rachel :D ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Sep 1992 11:09:22 -0500 From: mike Subject: MM: MM- Tony To me it is at least partly about how we could touch others lives for the better if only yeah, we weren't so self absorbed. It may have a gay main character, but lonliness is universal- you don't have to be a gay teen to feel isolated. Patty felt the same way but recognized it after it was too late to make a difference in Tony's life- to take the lyrics literally. We can't reach everyone we meet, but we can touch some people at least- one by one. It sounds to me like she regretted not being able to do that for him. Maybe he wouldn't have done it. Maybe she needed to be reached herself- I think I'll do a little dying today. I don't think the song has a unsympathetic tone to it- she had a heart for him or she wouldn't have written this song. That is how I hear it anyway. In the World Cafe interview I heard, she said that it was a true event in her hometown and she really did read about it in the paper.
