A review and thoughts from a bong resin free head! Well you guys, I just got back from the Patty show in San Francisco. She was GREAT! Great to see a woman, quite comfortable with her body in tight black dress, body as is, voice like an angel, and stage presence that commanded attention! The band that surrounded her looked like they were hired from a local fraternitiy, but they were ok too! The bass player cracked me up, wiggling his head like a chicken on ecstasy. She took the stage, unassumingly, and and opened with Wiggley Fingers. It rocked! Not one of my favs on the cd, but GREAT live! The set list comprised all Flaming Red material. After Wiggley, she went into One Big Love. My friend that accompanied me had never seen OR heard her before. During OBL she called into my ear that I MUST make a tape for her. The rest of the set included Flaming Red (LOUD!), Tony (almost punk-like dives back into the chorus that got people moving. No moshing though! LOL), Change (heard it played on KFOG on the way over), Goodbye (semi-acoustic....I liked it), Christina (a show stopper, VERY cool), Blue Sky (so much animation in her body on this one...even some lighting tech! Sister Hazel must have felt generous)...and finally.....she closed with Mary. VERY moving.... She said goodbye and left the stage. The applause went on....THE CROWD WANTED AN ENCORE FROM AN OPENING ACT!! It was great.....but alas, no such luck.....despite stomping of feet and clapping and cheering...... Sister Hazel came on and bored the crowd with endlessly wanking guitars, lead vocalist's references to San Francisco.. (YEAH DUDE!! Wake me when it's over), and mutated-Counting Crow-Blues Traveller-post hippie-pot smoking-watching paint peel-FOG MACHINE....(I kid you not about the fog machine). Anyway, I guess I am a bit biased, for I went to see the opening act...but...THEY SUCKED!! Anyway..I left after four songs to retreat to my car and Living With Ghosts in my tape deck. Didn't stick for an autograph, but had the pleasure of seeing the petite and enigmatic Patty Griffin. First time and hopefully not the last.......you know, I wanted to hear Peter Pan. Do you think I'm nuts? Not me! Love to hear anybody elses impression of the evening! Gotta get back to my cd player and turn up Not Alone....it gets deceptively quiet at time....I love it when she hits the lowest note I have ever heard her sing. You know...."and stay with me.....TONIGHT". :) Peace ya'll! This may be a little vague but bear with me....(oh boy what have I gotten myself into-haha) :) Okay, there is one person with the master copy, that would be me if I get all these songs that I'm hoping to get. Then I have branches, say I would have ten people that would volunteer to be a branch. So they would send me a blank and I would copy it for those ten people. Then everyone else is a leaf. They send a tape to their branch and the branches copy for the leaves, and so on..... There will be no monetary exchange involved except for the blanks and the cost of return postage. Cool? I'll keep everyone updated on the progress.... (But read on, please; it gets better.) I thought Patty and the band did a great job; the band really rocked, and Patty's presence was electric. I think she definitely won some new fans last night. It was thrilling to hear a mainly non-Patty crowd yelling for an encore from the opening act. :-) On the other hand, she *was* the opening act, and that was pretty clear. Regardless of her investment in the performance, this wasn't *her* show, so she didn't really have the latitude to, say, play a couple of acoustic tunes or otherwise stretch out. It was more or less orthodox Flaming Red all the way, and that's great as far as it goes, but it left me hungry for more. The sound was pretty bad, at least where I was standing. Hardly any vocals at all. But! The best part came after Patty's set, when I got to meet and shake the hand of the great woman herself!!!!! After her set I went outside to where the bus was parked and started milling around with some fans out there. First I asked one group if they were mad-mishers, and they gave me an exceedingly strange look, so I took that as a "no." (They were friendly, though, and were interested to learn that this list exists! :-) ) Ultimately I met up with Marc and Chris (Kris? sp?) from the list, and we and the other group and some other folks (10 or so altogether) waited around in the blustery San Francisco night until the equipment, the band, and, finally, Patty appeared. She had her hands full and she hustled right onto the bus at first, which worried everyone; but then she came back out and signed autographs and chatted for a long while. As mentioned elsewhere, she's completely gracious and generous, and charming, and shy, and tiny, and, of course, terrrrribly cute. :-) My sense of her as she stood next to the bus was of the introspective singer of "Let Him Fly" and "You Are Not Alone." I think it's just totally cool that she's got "Wiggley Fingers" in her, too. - --Allan, worshipful fan :-) ~~~~~~~~ Allan M. I'm almost back from a 10 day vacation spree. I've had quite a week and a half... last thursday to sunday I joined my EDA buddies in Bearsville. Then I left monday morning to join my mom & aunt up in Hampton Beach until today/friday. Tomorrow morning I'm leaving again until sunday- I'm going out to Boston to see The Amazing Jonathan. I don't know much about this Jonathan guy, but he's apparently an illusionist/comic/magician that my boyfriend loves, so.... it'll be an adventure. Here's the news on the Lyrics Archive... I've noticed when visiting the site myself that GeoCities had put TONS of pop-ups on the site. It drove me crazy. I even started getting replies on the site survey saying the pop-ups were driving people crazy. Soo... starting this month, I'm paying an extra $5 to make Geocities NOT put the pop-ups on my site. Odd, but necessary. There's another good perk, however- they gave me a new URL . You can now reach the PGLA at the old address ( http://www.geocities.com/wellesley/3079/patty.html) or at the brand spanking new, much easier to remember address... http://www.geocities.com/~cornflake_girl/patty.html Both will work, and since one is an alias for another, both addresses will always have the same exact thing :). There will be four or five new songs going up in the next day or two, thanks to Jen ( Mystchif1@aol.com ), who sent me a tape AND worked her little fingers to the bone typing out lyrics for me. "Daddy, she's a Goddess, can we keep her tonight ?"-- Jewel I'll post when the new songs are up ;) Rachel :D ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V2 #210 *********************************
