Subject: MM: A"Knee To The Band Paul "bees knees" Kim graciously retractively approved of my prior forwarding of his Patty review to the mishers, and adds: << i was gonna write somewhere in that review that anyone could forward it to Mad-Mission if they pleased, but i forgot...thanks, larry :) oh, an addendum that you could add is this : Patty introduced her band members (although i forget all their names), and later, when someone in the audience shouted "your band is hot", patty said "yeah, and they all look like movie stars" which was odd because not 10 seconds before that exchange, i was thinking about how they reminded me of movie stars...weird. Anyways, here's Patty's interp of who the band members look like, and my interp in parenthesis... clockwise starting on patty's right is the Second Guitarist who is from NYC who looks like Rudolph Valentino (slimmed down version of Chris Penn); Bassist from CA who looks like Raul Julia (Dean Martin with Sideshow Bob's [of the Simpsons] springy, curly hair); Drummer from LA who looks like Antonio Banderas (no comment); Keyboardist from Nashville who looks like James Dean (only a LOT taller); and Lead Guitarist also from Nashville who looks like Bill Paxton (bill paxton all the way, baby *Grin*) So that's that. Hearing about the great Patty Griffin concert got me reminiscing about the show I saw a coupla years ago... She, along with Billy Mann(who is also really good, I think), opened for Jann Arden at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre(cool place...about the size of an average movie theater). I got there 2 hours before show time because the ticket was GA, and I not only got a front row seat(WOOHOO!!!), but I also got a cassingle sampler of the three artists and a free Jann Arden hat from the Star 98.7 FM van. Anyways, Patty came out, had some difficulties with the sound system(she said "Welcome to my soundcheck..."). After that I was just blown away!!! How could such a strong and powerful voice come from such a petite frame? And her guitar playing(it was just her and her guitar...very cool...) was incredible. Other highlights...Her and Billy Mann singing an acoustic guitar duet of a Smokey Robinson song(I think it was either "Tears of a Clown" or "Tracks of my Tears")...Jann Arden singing a Pat Benetar song...Jann Arden singing a medly of songs while the band maintained a solid groove(including "Car Wash"...I think Shawn Colvin does a similar thing)...and Jann Arden tripping backwards over a stage monitor(she recovered...uninjured). She also cracked many, many jokes, too numerous to mention here. Ahhh...such fond memories of days gone by... Man, I'm starting to feel old... Oh well, time marches on...
