The only song that wasn't up on the lyrics archive was One More Girl, and as I typed out the lyrics, I realized how much I love it :). I have a question, though.... when I saw Patty at the Bull Run in Shirley, MA I wrote down the first line of the song because it really struck me. From what I can remember ( and my notes ) it was "I took off my iron frown because I found it weighed me down". However... listening to this tape the first line sounds completely different.... something like " I took off my --- s--- because I found it weighed me down". Anyone have any ideas ? Was I right the first time ? Am I completely off base ? I put up what I thought it was on the site, but if anyone can verify for me or let me know what it really is, I'll be incredibly greatful :). They met backstage at a show they were playing in Worcester, MA, sometime in the early 90's. I caught a show they did together at the Somerville Theatre in February. It was the first time I'd seen his show, and I enjoyed it though I don't think Patty was in the same form as when I saw her at the Met Cafe in Providence a week earlier. Now that was amazing! I have "Stories" by Ellis Paul. I've grown to like it very much. Its time for me to get another of his CDs. I was extrememy excited to see the show. I go to school in RI, last year, I returned home a few days before her show, called the Turning Point, the man said "That Patty Griffin girl has been sold out for two weeks, sorry." That's when I realized she was that talented- and she was catching on that fast! Hey Rachel, since I couldn't be there the first time around, do you think I can arrange some way to love vicariously through the tape? Melissa ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 01 May 1998 07:54:39 -0400 From: Elaine Bean Subject: MM: Lilith Fair CD/Cain Hi MMs, Just bought the Lilith CD - so far I've only listened to Patty and "Cain". Superb, superb. I think it's worth buying the CD for this one song, but since I love most of the other performers on this CD, I feel I'm really getting my moneys worth. Anyway, what I want to ask the list is, was anyone who has heard this song reminded of Bonnie Raitt? Not so much the voice (although some intonations and slurring of the notes definitely remind me of Bonnie's voice and style), but mostly the rocking guitar riffs. They are both distinctive singers with their own style, but I noticed these similarities in this version of Cain. Did this jump out at anyone else? Anyone else have an idea ? :) > > Rachel :D I think I remember reading somewhere or hearing Patty saying that it was taken from an event in the news in Boston at the time. She took the bare circumstances of a tragic murder and read into them the human part to create the song and bring it home. This song is the first one that I fell in love with- I couldn't believe it as it unfolded. I think it is a rare song- the kind that captured me first time around!
