I'm sorry for posting that list of addresses. Someone wrote to me and said that they didn't want to have their name made public, and a lot of people would likely leave the list of change their email addreses because of what I did. I guess I didn't realize the implications of what I was doing- I thought I was fostering the sense of friendship and community that I've found on other lists, and that I hope to develop here. Just two quick comments... 1) ANYONE can find out who's on the list, search for certain names or email addresses, and find out which lists you are subscribed to. These are all available by writing to majordomo@smoe.org with a simple command like "who". I didn't break into any top secret name bank to get everyone's addresses :). 2) If you don't want people to know your name on a list, don't set it on your mail application. For example, if you have your Netscape browser set to send out your mail from Gerblicky@geocities.com, you are giving out your name. Set your browsers, third party mail applications, etc not to send your name out with your mail. Smoe does not ask for your real name, so you can join any list and have your identity unknown. AOL doesn't send out your real name, and ALL mail servers that do send out names have preferences that you can set so your name isn't attached to your email address. Again, I'm sorry, and I hope nobody leaves the list over my good-intentioned email. Only people subscribed to this particular list can get that information and only by sending that command from the subscribed address. It's an option with majordomo mail servers. The options are "open", "closed" and "list", which are all self explanatory. This list and its' digest version are restricted to "list" for 'who' and 'which' commands sent to majordomo@smoe.org For more info on what you can do using majordomo, either send the word help to majordomo@smoe.org, or you can go to Majordomo School which is a part of my web page for the Jewel mailing list at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/majordomo.htm Mike :-) P.S. Ya done good Rachel :-) (you just didn't know about the "who" restrictions) * If you are new to the Jewel list and need a helping hand * The Jewel EveryDay Angels List Homepage & Guide is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup * * If you have list related questions, feel free to email me * at Ducksoup@spectra.net * * DuckofPrey@aol.com WhyADuck55 on AOL Instant Messenger ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 02 Apr 1998 21:51:21 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: Re: MM: Apology (Son of Minor Correction ;-) I wrote: >That's partially correct. The "which" command is *mighty helpful* in finding someone's email address you have either forgotten, lost or know a part of......as sending which duck would get you back a list of all email addresses subscibed to a smoe list which had "duck" somewhere in it (All my subscriptions would be shown, plus anyone else who has the word "duck" in their addy) example: I sent which duck to majordomo and got this: please note there is a maximum of 40 "hits" >>>> which duck The string 'duck' appears in the following entries in lists served by Majordomo@smoe.org: List Address ==== ======= afb Mike Connell afb Mike Connell afb-digest Mike Connell ecto Mike Connell ecto-digest Mike Connell eda-council Mike Connell eda-council-digest ducksoup@spectra.net eda-project Mike Connell eda-project-digest ducksoup@spectra.net edaf "Mike Connell" edaf "Mike Connell" edaf-board "Mike Connell" edaf-board-digest ducksoup@spectra.net edaf-digest ducksoup@spectra.net ferrick JDuck22@aol.com harbinger-news Mike Connell jewel Msducky13@aol.com jewel "Mike Connell" jewel Claiborne Culley jewel MRDucks2 jewel Shawn Duckett jewel-announce ducksoup@spectra.net jewel-digest duckofprey@aol.com jewel-digest supduck@rocketmail.com jewel-digest "Mike Connell" jewel-news supduck@rocketmail.com jewel-news duckofprey@aol.com jewel-news "Mike Connell" jewel-news "M.R.DUCKS" jewel-news Shawn Duckett mad-mission Mike Connell mad-mission Mike Connell mad-mission-digest Mike Connell mad-mission-digest Mike Connell nonsub ducksoup@spectra.net precious-things irieduck@ptd.net precious-things MRDucks2@aol.com test ducksoup@spectra.net test duckofprey@aol.com test-digest ducksoup@spectra.net torinews irieduck@ptd.net Maximum number of hits (40) exceeded Maximum number of hits (40) exceeded Maximum number of hits (40) exceeded Maximum number of hits (40) exceeded Maximum number of hits (40) exceeded Maximum number of hits (40) exceeded Maximum number of hits (40) exceeded Maximum number of hits (40) exceeded Mike :-) * The Patty Griffin/Mad-Mission@smoe List Homepage is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/pattyg/pattyg.htm * * The Jewel EveryDay Angels List Homepage & Guide is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup * * aka DuckOfPrey@aol.com WhyADuck55 on AOL Instant Messenger ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V2 #86 ********************************
