Despite all the sudden flying crack babies ( was that a joke ? ) I'm really happy with Patty's picks for the album. My favorite Patty song is "Wiggley Fingers", and despite yelling for it at the last two concerts, I haven't heard it in a while :). "Go Now" is cute and sweet, "Goodbye" is heart-wrenching and beautiful, and "Mary" is touching with great lyrics. Now, a bit of a challenge... I see that people are upset about "We are Water" and "Cain", so maybe this isn't the time to ask, but... what is Patty saying in "Cain" ? I think I've figured out the first verse in the past year and a half, even with an incredibly good concert tape. A rocking song only means so much to me if I can't tell what it's about... Patty has a few songs like that that are almost completely undecipherable to me :). So... if anyone has the lyrics to Cain, can they please post them or send them to me ? Thanks a bidillion :) Rachel :D ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Mar 1998 07:13:17 -0600 From: Mark Cicero Subject: MM: Lilith Fair CD -Reply Are these all "LIVE" performances??? Since I spared you my "Tony" comments, I'll offer one here. Perhaps "Cain" isn't on "Flaming Red" because it IS on the Lillith Fair CD. When "Living with Ghosts" was released I was disappointed that "I Write the Book" wasn't on it, but I was soon over that when I was able to really enjoy the songs that WERE on the album. And 20 years from now "Cain" will probably end up on the "Best of" boxed set ;> - --Jane ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Mar 1998 14:32:33 -0800 From: Lindsey Padgett Subject: Re: MM: Flaming Red... I don't know the words to Cain (that'll be my next project!), but I have deciphered most of the words to We Are Water. This is a great song...and, I'm sure most will agree that the lyrics are really great too. The omission of this song does make me feel kind of sad, but I am also excited to hear the ones I have never heard before. :) Anyway, here is We Are Water (??? denote the areas I am unable to decipher...any help would be greatly appreciated)...Also, thanks to Jerry for helping to fill in some of the blanks: We Are Water My friend, my friend you are traveling Some of these secrets are unraveling Some of these pictures coming into view I see the water washing over you The water's speaking now, it speaks your name I hear you talking to me sometimes when it rains Telling me your story of joy and pain But, I got no regrets, baby, I got no shame Cuz we are water, we flow and flow I feel you pouring through every inch of my soul I really must tell you this, baby, before you go We are water...we flow and flow I am a river, baby, I got plenty of time I don't know where I'm going, I'm just following the lines There's just no telling where this river will flow Got no choice in the matter, baby, just go where it goes I'm making my bed tonight right under this ??? Sometimes the lightning's so frightening sometimes the river's(?) so ??? But still I know this tide is always kissing my heels Sometimes I think I'm drowning all these things that I feel And we are water, we flow and flow I feel you pouring through every inch of my soul I really must tell you this, baby, before you go We are water...we are water We are water...we flow and flow Out on the beach today I did not find One single footstep that we had left behind So I went swimming in the deep blue sea And I could feel that water all over me Cuz we are water, we flow and flow I feel you pouring through every inch of my soul I really must tell you this, baby, before you go We are water...we are water We are water...we are water We are water...we are water We are water...we flow and flow We flow and flow There you have it.... She has to make the decision and I'm sure that there are reasons for her leaving off a song while including another. Maybe the song she left off doesn't hold quite as deep a meaning to her as the one she included holds. I don't know. But since they are HER songs (most of them at least) I think that all of the nasty comments I am seeing on some of the e-mails sent to the list are really uncalled for. I mean, we are all on here because we love Patty's music, right? Then we should respect her choices and express disappointment in a nicer way. She couldn't include EVERYHING on the new album. Maybe she wants to save some songs for concerts only. Just a thought. Anyway, I'm looking forward to her new release and will be very happy with the songs she includes on it, even if she leaves off a few that I would have loved to have had her record. :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Mar 1998 21:31:28 -0500 From: "Joseph Silin" Subject: MM: songs missing from CD to all members of the list who are interested, The reason i think that the songs "We are Water" and "Cain" are not on the first or second CD is that they are older songs. Unless my memory is wrong, I heard her play those songs back in 1993 during a radio interview, a show called Women in Music, WERS, Boston and at Club Passim in Harvard Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts. The funniest thing I heard her say at one of those shows, and it was because it was being broadcast over the air, on the 'Saturday Afternoon Live From Passim's Radio Show' was that some boy had left his pants at her apartment and she wanted him to come and retrieve them. :-) thanks for listening Patty Rules joesi ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V2 #78 ********************************
