I've noticed that many of the people on this list who have introduced themselves have mentioned that, among the other singer/songwriters they enjoy, Dar Williams is one of them (she being my personal favourite s/s in the world- no offense to Patty :) so I thought I'd mention that there is a page called "If You Like Dar Williams, You Might Like..." on the web. I think most of us share a very common taste in music and you'll find a lot of great people listed there (Jonatha and Catie included). It was compiled by a guy on the Dar mailing list and he's always looking for more suggestions so take a look and feel free to email him. I'm enjoying all this interpretation of Patty's lyrics, but would like to point out that as interesting it is to think what Patty meant, the beauty of truly lyric music is that it can take on special meanings for each of us based on our frame of reference....i'm really enjoying hearing what each of us take the lyrics to mean on a song that is very special to me and i think of in context of myself, not Patty was thinking when she wrote it....there are interpretations that are very different than I usually think of when I hear the song - thanks for sharing!! On another note - there was an instudio version of Forgiveness with backing musicians, etc that gets a fair amount of airplay around here...does anyone know where it's from or how to get ahold of it? I like the stark one better, i think, but I only ever catch part of it to make comparisons.... - - Laurel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jan 1998 12:37:40 EST From: Kashmyrkat Subject: Re: MM: More on Moses I commented that I thought there was a second person in the song, but didn't really say much else, I just thought I'd go a little further w/ my kinda sorta interpretation of the song - really it's just the mental image I get from it..... I just kinda get this picture in my head of a party with a woman (patty) kinda standing in the corner with her drink, feeling a little lonely and depressed - this is why she's thinking of the empty apartment and her best friend - and that there's a man there that she sees at these functions who always talks to her, but just seems to talk about himself (maybe he's trying to impress her), but never asks about her or seems to want to know about her. So, I guess a lot of my 'interpretation' is from the feeling it gives me rather than the her words - does that rambling make any sense at all? :-) Just my thoughts, as usual :-) Hugs to you all :-) Tammy :-) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jan 1998 13:26:03 -0500 From: wdb@obl.bidmc.harvard.edu (William D. Great informative site on various artist. I found it from the Patty Griffin mailing list. I noticed though, that everywhere I look for singer/songwriter's, no one ever mentions Lori Carson. She is a fabulous artist, used to sing with the Golden Palomino's, now has a Record out called "Everything I touch Runs Wild" Great Disc! She has been around a very long time and does have a few web sites and a mailing list which I joined but haven't had any feedback like I get from the Patty mailing list. It just makes me wonder if people haven't quite been properly introduced to her music. I feel like you all are really missing out! She is not really big commercially but definitely a veteran and worth checking out. I just needed to get that out..... Thanks, Heidi P.S. I just found out yesterday that Patty is coming back to Louisville on March 1 to play at the Guitar Emporium. Can't wait! I know I'm sort of late on the introduction/greetings front, but here it goes. I'm a 26-year-old guy who listens to and loves a wide variety of music, but was never extremely heavy into the female singer/songwriter genre until I heard Patty. She was performing at semi-famous antique/unique guitar shop here in Louisville. Even though it was sold out, I paid the owner the admission price to stand in the back of the store. It was about 90 degrees outside and 100 degrees inside. (Patty kept comparing it to a scene in "Coal Miner's Daughter" with all the southern ladies fanning themselves.) When she sang "Crazy" as an encore, I got chills. After the performance, I went looking for a late night record store to buy the LWG. I've been hooked ever since. I know we've said a lot, maybe too much, about the Moses lyrics, but one more opinion. Maybe I'm overstating the obvious here, but I think her use of the word 'queer' is just a simple elusion to the fact that this friend is definitely not her soulmate (Is that word too cheesy?). He's not the one who's going to be her lover, her Prince Charming, her "key to happiness", etc.... I don't think it's meant to be derogatory in any way, shape or form. But I'm a straight male, so what do I know? Moses is probably my favorite song on the album. I have at least five more pages of stuff I could write on this song, but I'll spare you. It's extremely interesting to see people from all over North America, even Australia, interested in her music. If anybody hears of any other dates near Kentucky, let me know. I don't get a chance to check the webpages dedicated to her that often. I don't think Patty thinks it is a derogatory statement, and I, myself, have many queer friends...and as someone has said, queer friends usually refer to themselves and other homosexuals as "queer." HOWEVER, in my interpretation of Moses, "queer" is used in a demeaning manor to make her life seem so much more tragic to the shallow world...when in reality, she enjoys her tragic life and her "queer" best friend. To them, it's like "oh she's alone, nobody bought her a drink, and to make things even worse, the only friend she can get is a queer."
