Why is someone like myself, ostensibly with a life and carreer outside of the internet, compelled to join a "fan" mailing list for an artist like Patty Griffin? Admiration. Validation. Connection. In our materially oriented, lookout for #1, style-over-substance culture, it is indeed rare to find an artist who speaks, from the core of her soul, to those of us who realize a deeper meaning to all of this. My personal musical transformation began in 1992 with Tori Amos' Little Earthquakes, and has carried me past the mundane and trivial works of all those lesser "artists" who have no idea, no concept of emotional risk. Of the incredible value of sharing their real identity, their true self with the rest of us, desperately searching for someone to relate to, to validate our travails, our fears, our lives. So when you find someone like Patty Griffin, who comes directly from the heart and puts herself so completely on the line, you cannot help but be refreshingly, thankfully, and totally...blown away. All I can say is that WE, those of us who understand the true nature of the human spirit, with all the obstacles life throws at us, and all those vain attempts to educate those less enlightened, must come together in whatever ways we can, in order to create a society which relies on truth rather than dillusion, on humanity rather than selfishness, on compassion rather than fear.
