Ugh! Things are looking more and more like it's going to come ashore on Texas right around the weekend. Listened to it, and was struck again at how awkward Patty can be. She's both eager and not eager to please. The interviewer, Howard Berkes, used a word "piercing" to describe Patty's voice. Patty cut in before he was able to finish his thought, and "worried" that the word had a bad connotation. Turns out, poor old Howard was just trying to say that her voice and lyrics "pierced him to his soul!" Patty gets flustered easily, I think, which I actually have lots of sympathy for. She speaks eloquently much of the time, especially through her music, but she's both eager to understand the other party's point and to protect the artistic integrity of her work. It causes her to jump out a little. She also at times appears to both love and hate all the attention she is gathering. At her last S.F. concert someone yelled out how much they liked one of the bandmember's shoes, and she mistakenly thought it was a compliment about her boots. After a bit of confusion, she muttered her way through the 'embarrassment' and was clearly flustered. Don't get me wrong here. Patty's personality seems utterly delightful and, though some may disagree, a little goofy (I mean that in a positive way, because I like goofy). She's incredibly observant and smart. But I have noticed this tendency to poke fun or have a just slightly hostile response to some situations. Oh well, it shows she is human, and thank god for that. Julie Miller has a bluegrass/old-timey quality, also as she says, she sings like a little girl. I have the Buddy & Julie Miller CD that came out earlier this year and her voice really is unmistakable, and much like Patty's. http://www.buddyandjulie.com/ - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim and Justine Murphy" To: "Guy S. Wilco is playing at the Mercury Lounge Friday night before ACL fest. There were only 500 tickets pressed, 250 of which were sold through Wilco World a few weeks ago (and three of which belong to me!) another 150 are reserved for the guest list (Patty and other ACL performers?) and 100 will be available at the door Friday night. I hope to see you there. I'll be the 6'5" guy blocking everyone's view, with my 6'7" brother and my 6'6" friend, not to mention my 5'5" wife. We had planned on going to see the Gourds Friday night, as they are having a release party for their new one (Excellent disc, on of my top ten of the year for sure) until we heard abou this shin-dig. Plus, no guilt associated with skipping them in favor of Patty on Saturday. Personally, I am hoping for Gary and Mark from the Jayhawks to get up with Wilco and do a few Golden Smog tunes. A good friend of mine saw you play on a trip he made up to SF and said that you were going to send him a CD and that I had to hear you, but then he never got anything. So if you wanna send me one, I'll make sure he gets it and that I get a listen in too (his name's Brian, he's a big, tall bald gay guy, he was there with my Asian friend Andrew - don't know if that'll trigger your memory at all). It's funny 'cause he couldn't remember exactly how to spell your name, then here you pop up on the Patty Griffin list! Anyway, if you wanna send me one: Aaron J.
