According to an article I just read on the Dixie Chicks, "Wide Open Spaces" and "Fly" have sold over 10 million copies EACH. Doing the math, for one song by Patty on one Chicks CD at a royalty rate of $0.071 per CD sold (assuming all 10 million CDs were manufactured prior to January 2001) whoever owns Patty's publishing for "Let Him Fly" (assuming it's Patty!) would net $710,000.00. Now, if the new Chicks CD has TWO Patty songs and does as equally well as their prior two releases, one can see the likelihood that Patty would clear $1,420,000.00 off of royalties for her contributions for the new record, giving her a total of $2,130,000.00 for writing three little songs. Wouldnt you think with that kinda dough, Patty could afford to buy back Silver Bell if she really wanted to? This is of course assuming Patty owns 100% of her publishing on these songs. Mimi PS: Kinda makes sending a few bucks for silver bell bootlegs seem kinda... well... uh...... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Aug 2002 10:56:50 EDT From: Mooodeee@aol.com Subject: Re: MM: holy cow! oops! did the math wrong on that. The new chicks CD would be under the *new* mechanical royalty rate of $0.08 per CD, so with both the new CD and Fly selling at 10 million units each, with Fly being the 0.071 rate and the new one being at the 0.08 rate, that comes to $2,310,000.00. I was underestimating it by $180,000.00 there. Sorry about that!! It would be nice if fans didn't drag their "real men" , who usually aren't appreciative of Patty's music , along with them. She responded with her usual class. The moment I remember most vividly was when she went into the high notes at the end of MP. She went for them with a mixture of hope & apprehension in her eyes , blinking rapidly. Attended both shows with Lisa Zwick who had to stress over the show again. At Joe's Pub , she couldn't find out if it was over 21 until the doors opened. This time she had to sweat out a possible cancellation. All's well that ends well. She went into "Forgiveness" for the 2nd solo , but stopped , & then went into "Falling Down" , a replacement that killed any disappointment about changing up. I think she said she forgot the chords. That's when I started wondering about trying some steroids myself. Didn't seem to bother her at all , as she was in a very playful mood for awhile. I think she must have said "Tooney-Shmooney" , b/c I have a note about tuning , & that's what she usually says. Have 2 !! for LHF. That's one of the songs where I notice the biggest variance in Patty's vocals. Some nights it's merely good , other nights it's !!! "Follow Me Home" is always a highlight when she does it. Not quite "Ruby's Arms" , but I always like it when a great new song is one of Patty's own. Have to keep up the composition legacy along with the performance one. Hi Everyone! I hosted the Ohio/Michigan Tori B'day Bash for RAINN last year in Toledo, Ohio and was all set to do the same this year. With planning starting earlier this year, I just knew this one would top last year. Unfortunately, I had 6 days of 10+ hour work days for months coupled with a few personal issues that prevented me from planning this years event. Last week, when things slowed down enough for me to think about it I decided maybe a last minute thing would still work. After reading some of the posts yesterday and today about disappointments and realizing the worth of even just a FEW people "getting it" I have decided to do the last minute party. This year's RAINN benefit will be held at my home in Toledo, Ohio and will showcase artists that perhaps don't get the credit they deserve. There will be live video footage shown throughout the day, raffles, good food and music. This will be a more intimate setting than last years event but hopefully it will provide the environment to meet like minded people and raise money for a good cause. So here are the details....... Ohio/Michigan Tori Birthday Bash for RAINN Date: Saturday, August 31st 2002 Time: 3 pm until..... Where: Toledo, Ohio (once you confirm I will send directions) Cost: Donation $15 minimum to RAINN Events: Live video footage of artists below will be shown throughout the day and evening... Tori Amos - DVD format Dallas Texas SLG Tour Patty Griffin - The Gem Theater, Detroit, MI 2002 Julia Fordham - Smith's Olde Bar, Atlanta, GA 2002 Emm Gryner - Brazil Coffee Shop, Royal Oak, MI 2001 Sarah Slean - Various performances from 1999 - 2001 Aimee Mann - Various Rarities Patti Smith - Goddess of Punk Rock....surprise video footage There will also be other surprise video footage shown throughout the day as well as raffles that include Tori items, rare T-shirts, collectibles, etc. from other artists. These raffles will be posted by Wedneday of this week, so stay tuned! If any Detroit/Ann Arbor/Toledo artists would like to perform at this bash, please email me privately. You will need to RSVP to me by Friday, August 30th to confirm attendance. I look forward to hearing from you all this week! If you recieved this email and do not want to hear about updates to this event please let me know. She caught my attention opening for Patty at the Rams head last year. Met up with Dave in Charlottesville for a 4 show tour , then met up with Andy Scheiner & family for the in-store & show. I have "Goodbye Old Friend" on the set list. Don't know if she said the name or if I surmised it.I thought it was the one that Mary Chapin Carpenter was doing , but according to Dana's post the name is different , & the lyrics that Andy & I recalled don't jibe with it. Any clarification would be appreciated. As mentioned , my abbreviated review was , "More steroids ! " Patty was intense & focused throughout , just blazing away in her red dress. She was really enjoying herself , & I'll assume she's aware of the law of diminishing returns when dealing with drugs. Where can I get some of them steroids ? A lot of individuals in the crowd were very vocal in their support of Patty. I'm sure that she gained a lot of new fans too. Dave & I haeded out for Carrboro after 2 Lucinda songs , & in the "misery loves company" department , he had the unique pleasure of waking up in the car after a few hours sleep. It usually takes me an hour or so before I even start thinking about feeling normal. What a great venue ! A small converted church holding about 200. With a stage so small that Patty was on the front edge with the front seats about 2 feet away. Dave & I were there for a awhile before anyone else showed up. Set list : Be Careful The Long Ride Rain Chief Making Pies The Moon's Gonna' Follow Me Home / solo Poor Man's House / solo Goodbye / Patty & Doug Flaming Red / Patty & Doug Truth # 2 Stolen Car Mad Mission Mil Besos Encore Let Him Fly / Patty & Doug Tomorrow Night / Patty & Doug Sweet Lorraine Dave mini-tour timing was impeccable. Another top-notch show. A few people have mentioned Patty's childhood story , but I had a slightly different take on it than them. My impression was that she thought the choir box was heaven , & the nuns were angels , & that she tried to sing along , so that she might be an angel in heaven too , when she was shushed. So it seems that the genesis of Patty's career bent may have just been a little girl wanting to get to heaven. I rarely notice Patty looking at me beyond the glance stage , but when I looked up from writing this note she was looking straight at my note paper. I hope Dave was kidding when he said that he never saw her glare at anyone like that before. She didn't look pleased when I looked up.Thanks again to Andy & family. Dropped Dave off at his car about 5 am , & we headed off into the sunrise. Best outdoor Patty show I've seen so far , ranking with her best shows overall. She was in the middle of her Chix tour with the Dixies attending , & she & the band were primed for a headline show. This one was very good , but not up to the 2000 show. "Tourist trap" springs to mind. OK if you're just looking for a good time , but when I'm on a Patty tour , I'm always asking "where's the depth". Spent a few hours before & after the the show. Best thing I heard outside of Patty & Eliza was Clapton's Blind Faith doing "Presence of the Lord" piped out from one of the bars. Stood on the street watching the birds soar as I sang along (quietly).
