I know she plays the guitar for "Rain" but can't remember if she did for "Chief". I'm trying to see if Chief has the same tunings as Rain. I am 99% sure the tunings are DADDAD with capo on 4th fret. I'm figuring it out but I want to be sure!!!!! Please let me know if anyone has noticed it, or if you play the guitar, try this out for Chief and let me know what you come up with. Some of the chord formations are very similar to "rain". I have most of it, but not sure if the beginning is right. I got a copy a couple of months ago (thanks, Bob), but no track list. I'd like to know the actual titles of the songs, rather than what they may seem to be (Top of the World/Little Songbird). If anyone can help me out, please email me. I don't believe I've ever posted before...although I have certainly enjoyed reading all of your's. :) I was wondering if anyone out there was driving from Indiana (or somewhere in that general vicinity) to the Newport Folk Festival or Boston or Providence on August 1st or so? My friend was supposed to accompany me to the festival but her driving buddies have backed out on her and now she can't come. Can anyone out there drive her? ATO should have the Balls to bring Patty Over here and release her album and not behave like the USA is the only region that matters/exists." True...and since ATO was smart enough to recognize the talent of the UK native David Gray and release him here, I'm sure they're always considering the possibilities of what can be done for Patty and where she'll benefit the most. Doesn't hurt to build the U.S. following, does it? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Jul 2002 22:05:18 +0100 From: "Matthew Smith" Subject: MM: FW: re: Patty/ ATO/Mary Gauthier Of course she should build the US following, I just feel as if i'm never going to see her, that's all. EM Mary Gauthier recently did a tour of the UK, and I saw her at the Borderline, playing to about 200 people, and she said that it was the biggest audience she had ever had. If she can tour on that fanbase, then i'm sure PG could manage it. Superb gig by the way. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-mad-mission@smoe.org [mailto:owner-mad-mission@smoe.org]On Behalf Of Dome93@aol.com Sent: 01 July 2002 19:44 To: mad-mission@smoe.org Subject: MM: re: Patty/ ATO >Doesn't hurt to build the U.S. following, does it? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Jul 2002 20:30:57 -0400 From: "Don Henn" Subject: MM: Patty on USA MMers , Just watched Patty singing with Willie for the 2nd time. With all the hours I've spent listening to her , & watching her perform , all I could think of , was that here is a performer for the ages. I can't remember when I've overindulged so much on something w/o it wearing thin. The traveling gets old sometimes , but Patty's performances never do. Fair warning ; I'm getting ready to post my reviews : ) Not going to argue with Patty. If she says it's "The Long Ride" , then so be it. Parked a few blocks away & walked. Got lucky meeting local fan Scott ( who's now an MMer ). He was a member of the Tralf , & got me in the VIP line as his guest. Front row center again ! Set list : Chief Rain The Long Ride Making Pies Be Careful Flaming Red / Patty & Doug Forgiveness / solo The Moon's Gonna' Follow Me Home Truth # 2 Carry Me Stolen Car Mad Mission Mil Besos Encore Let Him Fly / Patty & Doug Tomorrow Night / Patty & Doug Mary "Flaming Red" was great. I like the present version with Patty & Doug a lot more than the full band album cut or even Patty's solo version. FR & MM are 2 songs that I don't mind hearing at every performance. She knocked out "Forgiveness" again , & did a great version of "Follow Me Home". Not quite up to the HBG version , tho. She seemed to really enjoy "Truth # 2" , & I enjoyed seeing her flash that great smile a few times. Her vocals on "Carry Me" seemed to be stronger than usual on that song. I think the opening notes on "Stolen Car" are different , b/c it takes me a few seconds longer to identify it than it used to. Fine version , but I think I like the old intro. Another great rendering of "Tomorrow Night" , & another song I don't mind hearing at every show. Another great opener in Rose Polenzani. Saw her with Voices On The Verge at Wamfest , but didn't remember her from there. Will remember her now. Also had a great accompanist on the electric guitar. No flying fingers or loud volume , just support for the composition & vocals. Got a CD before I left , but like Eliza , it didn't do her live set justice. Her guitarist wasn't on it , & her vocals seemed to frequently get too loud , something I didn't notice during her live set. Rose related one of the funniest stage stories I ever heard. They stopped on their way to Buffalo , & when she went into the bathroom , she heard a little girl making some very distressing noises in one of the stalls. She was concerned & was thinking of checking on her , when she heard , "Mommy ! That was a big one" : ) Walked Scott to the bus b/c he wanted to see Patty before she left. Saw Brian there , & he asked me how I liked the show. I said "great" as usual , & that it was a step up from HBG. He said that they were pretty tired from the long trip. Found an excellent solo act a few blocks away. Had a few good compositions , but his covers were better. After he nailed Pearl Jam's "Black" , I asked him where his tip jar was. He wasn't getting paid , & he had no tip jar. Made me think of Joni's "Real Good for Free". If you play for the joy & pleasure of it , you don't have to be too concerned about your career ups & downs. He certainly was enjoying himself. When he finished , I walked out , heard some good loud music , & followed it to the source. When I was in LA , I took me & my red shoes back to the motel b/c I didn't want to deal with the predominantly gay scene there , but we strolled right into a gay bar/club in Buffalo. Didn't take long to realize it , b/c a pixie-ish young guy started dancing around me as I walked in. Never gave it a hard thought , b/c I was taken by the music , & did a little solo dance at the edge of the floor. I think I was hit on a few times , but nothing outlandish. The most overt was a guy who gave me a knowing smile & said he'd get to know me better before I left. After an hour or so , the show started , & I have to admit that some of the lip-synching drag queens were excellent at projecting the illusion of feminine beauty. Even those who didn't were entertaining with their over the top presentations. I think the difference in LA was that I saw so many severe looking , muscular guys hanging out. No way did I want them hitting on me. Fortunately , I was aware enough to only have 1 drink while I was there. When I left , my Mapquest directions had a different starting point b/c of where I parked , & I had a hard time finding my way out. I was so intent on street or route signs , that I missed a ONE WAY sign , & 2 of Buffalo's finest swooped down on me immediately , lights flashing. Don't know if he smelled anything or noticed my wristband from the Tralf , but he asked me if I had been drinking. I said yes & that I had 4 or 5 since 6:00. I was pleasantly surprised when he didn't demand a breathalyzer or roadside test , didn't give me a ticket for the one-way violation , & gave me clear directions to get out of the city. WHEW ! Got out of Dodge with all deliberate speed , feeling very lucky. When I mentally rechecked my drinking , I figured 9 or 10 in the same number of hours. According to my general theory of blood-alcohol level , I should have been under .05 , but I could tell by how I felt , that I would have been marginal if I had been tested. I guess I wasn't metabolizing as efficiently as normal. Within an hour or so , the combination of too much alcohol & too little sleep started telling on me. I spent the drive to Winooski telling myself that I'm getting too old for this , & that these all night drives are wearing a little thin. Once I got to my motel the next day , had a nap & a shower , I felt a little closer to fine, & when Patty started singing , everything was fine again. I had been very careful about my drinking when I had to drive before this , & I hope this warning is sufficient.
