In a word: 3No.2 Don, where are you? It9s been a couple weeks since your last post/review. Here9s the set list: Chief Rain Long Ride Home Makin9 Pies Flaming Red Poor Man9s House Top of the World Truth #2 Goodbye Be Careful * Ruby9s Arms Mad Mission Mil Besos 1st Encore Let Him Fly Tomorrow Night Sweet Lorraine 2nd Encore Mary * Note that I cannot recall when exactly during the set she played Be Careful. Sorry for the inaccuracy. I beg forgiveness of my fellow MMers, but I9m just too tuckered to write an elaborate review of PG9s performance. I could blather about all sorts of stuff. Patty mentioned Mercury being in retrograde a few times, and I chalked it up to being a double entendre for not only the present moment but also her awareness that she was back in an 3industry2 town wherein live the beasts that turned away from her talent (As John Lennon once sang, 3How do you sleep?2). This town9ll leave even the heartiest soul uncomfortable at times, and that PG seemed only slightly nervous is a credit to her tenacity and confidence in her craft. I9d say the audience was composed of 85% PG fans and 15% industry comps who I hope were knocked out of their jaded doldrums by evening9s end. They seemingly were, as PG was genuinely effusive towards the audience before she left. And what of her music? Most of you should know sight unseen, ears unheard, that PG gives great sound & word. Her band is top notch as well. Doug Lancio plays a lovely slide guitar that perfectly compliments PG9s voice and rhythm. And, she played one of my favorite Tom Wait9s songs, Ruby9s Arms, which she owned this evening. I9m pleased she continues to include it in her sets. I wish you all as swell an evening as I had in a long, long time. G9night. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 May 2002 05:31:51 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: MM: FWD: Patty Griffin In-Store and Radio Performances!! While I knew he'd put on a great show, I wasn't prepared for how much I would enjoy the intermission. Maybe I ought to call it inter-MAD-mission....As everyone is filing out of the Andrew Jackson Hall for the restrooms or refreshments or to smoke, I hear Patty's voice coming through the speakers with "It's hard to listen to a hard, hard heart...." 1000 Kisses played all the way through "Nobody's Crying" before Jackson took the stage again & while I wasn't disappointed to see him, I could have waited happily until the end of Patty's cd. If the artists pick their own music to play, I think Jackson Browne and I must have something in common....Steve Earle's newest release "Sidetracks" was playing before the show. The only thing better would have been to have all three performers in the same place, live and in person. Maybe in Sedona in October. Melanie - --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Is anyone here (besides me) a fan of Amanda Kravat? Or Marry Me Jane, her old band? Her solo album kicks ass, and the 2 MMJ cds were awesome as well. Not a big fan of Tick, but their self-titled debut, if you can find it, is definitely worth a buy. It goes for $0.99 on secondspin.com when they have it, and there's always one or two on eBay or half.com. Good stuff. Russ > I'm a bit late with this, perhaps, but... Patty was wonderful again but it seemed a little less tight on some songs...Mil Besos, for instance. Maybe she was getting tired. But overall, she was incredible. Her energy on songs like Truth #2 and Ruby's Arms was phenomenal. I saw Don...I'm sure he'll be writing soon. Give the man a chance :) It's gotta be tough being on the road all the time. PATTY was in a lovely blue dress (my Belly Up commentary made it sound as though Don was in the pink dress that night: my apologies. He looked great, but I don't think pink is his color). The crowd was interesting: warm and supportive like the crowd in Belly Up but full of a lot more people who evidently thought we were paying to hear THEM sing rather than Patty. One person kept singing the opening line right before Patty...nice and loud too, like Patty might just hand over the microphone and say, "Oh, you know this one? Go ahead." I get the "sing along" concept but it was a little strange. Have to admit I was a little disappointed that the set list was exactly the same...was hoping to hear Nobody's Crying or Tony but I'm still amazed to have heard Goodbye, Truth #2, Ruby's Arms, Let Him Fly and Top of the World all in one evening (well, 2 nights in a row really). Hope some other MM folks were there enjoying the show...hope we don't have to wait another couple of years to see her in so. California again. It's unfortunate but there WERE quite a few people who seemed to think that they were the center of attention for the night, as well as a few others who lacked general consideration for others - but hey, this is L.A. right? ; ) For instance, there was a woman right up by the stage who I'm assuming was with the press because she had an enormous camera that she couldn't have possibly snuck past the guy at the door and she was loudly snapping pictures through even some of the quietest parts of Patty's show. She was clearly not a fan and was irritatin the lot of us who were right by her. It was a great show though, and if anyone out there on this list was able to boot it, I would love to make arrangements to get my hands on a copy, which I would then be more than glad to share with others who are interested. Oh, and for those who were unhappy with Michael Fracasso as Patty's opener, we were treated to Maia Sharp whom everyone I was around enjoyed quite a bit, so check her out if you're so inclined. Maia Sharp was probably the best opener I've seen in a while. She's no Patty, but she was good. The first song she did was pretty good, as was the last song which I thinks her current single, "Willing To Burn," or something of the sort. Met some nice girls before the show who saved my spot in line as I went to will call. If you're on here, thanks. :} Some highlights of Patty's show... I though "Long Ride Home" was excellent. With the backup vocals they have going on and everything, the song sounded wonderful. Maybe it was just where I was on the balcony, but I couldn't hear most of "Ruby's Arms." It was all drowned out. I was really pleased she did "Top of the World" and "Goodbye." I have to say, watching her be playful on "Mad Mission" was entertaining. MM was the highlight of the evening. As for the woman with the large camara down in front, she must have been press, I mean she shined a light in Patty's face a few times and Patty said nothing, so... All in all, a great evening. Loved the venue too. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 May 2002 19:18:00 -0700 (PDT) From: ronni heggen Subject: MM: mm: willie special i finally got to watch the Willie Nelson special that i have tivo'd and I just have to say that Patty blew me away--that voice--my gosh I love that! Norah Jones was good too and I loved Keith Richards--he was great--and the Lost Highwaymen! Just had to say it. Anyway, I saved it on tivo if anyone needs a VHS copy they can send me a tape and I can record the whole thing or just the Patty song. Let me know. Ronni in ND who still hasn't seen Patty anywhere near her neighborhood and is verrrry sad about it.
