Patty will be performing at the Borders bookstore on the same day as her Ann Arbor performance at the Arc. I think this is an awesome promotional opportunity for Patty, performing for free, during the daytime, at a downtown bookstore. But at the same time, the idea is crazy. I am only guessing here, but I estimate that she'll have anywhere between 100 and 400 people who want to see her at Borders. I didn't get tickets to see her at the Arc this time around (money is very tight), but count on 4 of us in our family going, and my wife told two of her friends from our kids' playgroup who also like Patty, and they are going, and countless more who are in the same boat will probably be there, as well as some of the 500 going to the Arc performance. I am reminded of the footage of the Beatles playing a surpise free concert on the rooftop of Apple records (I believe it was) in the afternoon, and the thousands who stopped having a lunch break to enjoy the jam. No, she is not as big as the Beatles, and probably never will be, but still... the Borders only can hold about 50 people in that little area upstairs. It is going to be mobbed. Don't get me wrong. It would be great if there were 10,000 people at every performance, each buying a CD and becoming a lifelong fan, but my mind is boggled by the logistical nightmare Borders will have on the afternoon of the 21st of April. HMV On that note, has anyone on this list ever experienced an in-store performance at HMV in Cambridge? I can't picture where they would set up - besides that, it's not a very big place. An hour before it started the place was packed! There were hundreds of people there and it wasn't worth standing around (I left and went to the bar :-) hehe) But you'd be suprised how many people they can pack into the upstairs of that particular store. However, I've also attended a few of Patty's in-store performances at various MI Borders, and there were probably less than 100 people at either.... I think we'll be OK - I'll see you there :) - Jen www.pattygriffin.net > From: David Tumbarello > Sent: Sunday, April 07, 2002 11:24 AM > > Let me get this right... If it's at 2pm do we need to be there HOURS before? (i'm assuming).... sorry to post to the whole list, but i thought perhaps Jen might have good advice for others attending an in-store as well... :) Thanks! John Mayer is huge here so that's why it was so packed for him. I'll probably show up around 1:15 or so. Hopefully it will be a nice day for waiting outside the Ark later on as well :-) hehe. She's gonna be here in NY at 5 i think (i guess she's doing the whole chain of Borders?) and i was thinking of getting there at 3. It's not like I have so much time on my hands to sit waiting for 2 hrs...but I have a feeling the waiting would be worse if i come in after everyone else.. - -Lisa - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sarah Stanley" To: ; Sent: Sunday, April 07, 2002 12:36 PM Subject: Re: MM: RE: Free performance at Borders > Jen, what time would you suggest getting there? > If it's at 2pm do we need to be there HOURS before? > (i'm assuming).... sorry to post to the whole list, > but i thought perhaps Jen might have good advice for > others attending an in-store as well... > > :) Thanks! > Sarah > > > >From: Jennifer Caputo > > >However, I've also attended a few of Patty's in-store performances at > > >various MI Borders, and there were probably less than 100 people at > > >either.... > >I think we'll be OK - I'll see you there :) > > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > "May you dream you are dreaming in a warm soft bed > And may the voices inside you that fill you with dread > Make the sounds of thousands of angels instead > Tonight where you might be laying your head... > I wish you well..." -- Patty Griffin > > > _________________________________________________________________ > Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. > http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V6 #119 *********************************
