Patty Discovering Patty...1996...I had been told to check out Jann Arden and was considering attending her concert in Seattle. I went into Borders to see if I could listen to some of her stuff, and as I perused the CDs, I heard this *voice* coming through the speakers. I found out it was Patty, and also found out she would be opening for Jann. Needless to say, I bought LWG immediately, went to the concert, was blown away, and have since forgotten about Jann and also Billy Mann, the third performer at that concert. OK, I still have their CDs, but let's just say they only get played when I do my "A to Z" marathon... Can't wait for Tuesday!! I sat in my car and listened to the whole song, mesmerized. That night I went out and bought Living With Ghosts, the rest is history. Patty is one of those few artists who I can remember exactly where I was when I first heard them. The best thing, though, is that I haven't tired of her at all, unlike most of the others. I have to say, KSCA totally ruled. They turned me on to Dar Williams as well. - --Elena > Discovering Patty...1996...I had been told to check out Jann Arden and was > considering attending her concert in Seattle. LWG with a full band. it was awesome. the fans were just as great. i was totally taken with the entire experience. the way people were dancing and singing to her songs and just loving it.. i mean.. really loving it. i had such a great time and i fell in love with her music and have been playing LWG since then. i NEVER get tired of it. the only downfall is when i play it i have to be alone.. or with someone that isnt going to bother me because i HAVE to sing out loud.. really loud. the music just takes over...lol i get annoyed when people interrupt me. thank God for replay. ~~Kim ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Apr 2002 10:03:39 -0800 From: "V Chenevey" Subject: MM: Re: The patty discovery thread Wow Elena, that was my experience, exactly! (ok,'cept maybe for the getting outta the car part. I was probably driving on the freeway.) I was also going through a divorce, and I thought that was the best breakup album of all time. Every song just struck a chord. I miss that radio station, too. They also used to play "Walk Like A Camel" by the Southern Somethings on the Skids - ok, that's not exactly right, either, but I'll betcha lots of you guys know who I mean. All I can think of is "Southern Comfort". I first heard about Patty in 1998, when, after attending = Lilith Fair, I threw in the Song Sampler CD they were giving away = free...I heard One Big Love, and ran to find Flaming Red. I loved that = disc to death, and then was going to see Patty at the Odeon in = Cleveland, but her show was cancelled. Just last year my girlfriend = gave me Living with Ghosts for my birthday. Now, I will finally get the = chance to see her sing, at the Odeon on April 20, and I cannot wait! (I = was going to go to the Landmine concert, but decided to be a Patty snob, = and wait until I could just see her!) Subject: MM: getting into Patty As ever, I'm lagging ever so slightly behind in threads (some I chase, some I give up on and just enjoy from the sidelines). However..... five years ago, on a trip back to the States, we were staying with some old friends of my partner who had settled in Delaware. They were also music lovers, and in the evenings we'd sit around, get stoned, have a good laugh and listen to music. One night they slipped "Living With Ghosts" into their cd auto-changer-thingie, and eventually "Every Little Bit" came on. It was one of those moments. Like a diamond bullet, as someone once said, pushing its way across the room, boring its way through the many layers of self that have built up over the years, striking into the heart and resonating like a bell that only I could hear. All the messed up relationships I'd ever had (which is pretty much all of them up until my partner) came flooding back, having found the perfect soundtrack. I wanted to hear that song again and again, just to live through all the pain and love again, to strike that perfect balance between love and hate. So anyway.... Many thanks to Melissa, by the way, for giving Matthew Jay a mention. His "Draw" cd was one of my favourites of '01. Highly recommended. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Apr 2002 18:15:11 EST From: Goodnessbeef@aol.com Subject: MM:discovering Patty I discovered Patty though a compilation cd called "Live at the X Lounge". It was given to me by a friend in summer 1997, and I think it came from 100.7 in Birmingham, although I'm not sure. But anyway, she did an acoustic version of "Tony" that blew my mind, and I had to hear more, so I bought "Living With Ghosts" and was completely hooked. It was last summer until I actually got to see her perform, and it was even more amazing than I had anticipated. Oh, and it's Southern Culture on the Skids. Great stuff, and really, really good live if you like that kind of sound. :) ~Steph ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 03 Apr 2002 18:34:11 -0500 From: Jennifer Caputo Subject: MM: FWD: Patty Griffin Live Broadcasts, Tourdates, In-Stores and more!! Quite a pity that a city as large and 'diverse' as L.A. can't support one single radio station that plays this format when nearly every other large city (and smaller ones). And KCRW doesn't count 'cause you'd have to listen to 60 hours of news and talk to get to the music they play (and most of that at off hours when I CAN'T listen to the radio). A few years later, 103.1 popped up, only to go the same route after a year or so (make way for the Spanish-language station!). Any millionaires out there who wanna buy a radio station in L.A. and let me program the music? ; P Thinking wishfully, Aaron On Wed, 3 Apr 2002 09:29:37 -0800 "Elena" writes: > I was listening to the now long-defunct KSCA 101.9 (in LA), in my > car, I > think it was late summer/early fall, 1996 - I had just parked and > was about > to get out, and I heard the first few opening lines of "Every Little > Bit" > and my jaw dropped. They should at least do what they do with the Country Music Awards, and re-name the award "Breakthrough Artist" so at least they'd be able to recognize an artist (new or otherwise) whose work finally reaches a level of mass acceptance with slapping it with a ridiculous "new artist" label.
