I got to hang out with Edwin McCain a few nights ago at the Tin Angel, (great things occur when you have good management,) and we were talking about Beth, and he said she should be almost done with her new album. Wahoo! P.S. ---also was told she got hitched!!!!! Anyways, Beth was only doing a few shows I think because of making her album, Janis' sister, (laura ?) asked Beth to come back and do a few shows, and that Cathy chick was gonna do the rest. It's sorta hit or miss. I know some people who went up there to see her, and were dissapointed that Beth wasn't the one singing. She wasn't the one acting, just the 'singing janis.' I would love to have seen her though. ~darc http://www.darcieminerband.com "who's yo housekeepa whatcha keep in yo house" -ludacris Don wrote: "Sorry for my diarrheal posting today , ( oops ! did I just become a potty-mouth ? ) , but I could have sworn that someone mentioned Beth playing Janis off-broadway. I've heard comparisons to Janis since her demise , but when I saw Beth in one of Dave's favorite hangouts last year , she was by far , the closest anyone has gotten. After seeing her show , I was afraid that all other shows would be too tame by comparison. Besides being a wild woman , she has all the skills ; writing , singing , also great on the keyboard. I am sorely disappointed. Hope she didn't have another relapse." Get more from the Web. If you (like me!) spent lots of time sifting through the various versions of the tracks on Audio Galaxy, I may be able to help you out. It took me about 10 different downloads to finally find the studio versions of "Top of the World," but, I did finally find it! Same thing happened with the other tracks As a a courtesy to everyone else, I renamed my track as follows: Instead of "top of the world", I saved it as "top of the world (from Silver Bell)" I added the "(from Silver Bell)" to the end of all 10 tracks. At first, it will be harder to find these ones, since there are fewer copies, but after a while, hopefully they will take over as the most popular ones! Best of luck, Scott ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Mar 2002 16:32:45 -0500 From: "Don Henn" Subject: MM: SPC , SNSC ,SDC , BMBHC MMers , Some Patty content , some Nina Simone content , some Don content , but mostly Billie Holiday content. Got a new computer a few months ago , & am finally making compilations of my favorite non-Patty artists. I made a few while I was learning , but started in earnest a few days ago , so I would have them for my trips. After doing Pink Floyd & Kansas , I decided to finally tackle the 16 Billie Holiday CDs I have. Mostly found in bargain bins. I started once before with my music recorder , but it was an overwhelming task , trying to sort out what I wanted , & recording it in real time. With the many features the computer has , compiling is probably 5-10 times faster with it. As I was recording & listening , being drawn into Billie's music more than ever , I was struck by the parallels with Patty. The main thing that I think they have in common is that exceptional emotive quality in their voices , & I'm sticking by my story that Patty's music is going to outlast all the choreographed wannabes we see in videos. I think it may have been a big break for Patty when her produced version of "Living With Ghosts" was rejected in favor of the demo. That's where that quality shines through for all to hear, with just her & her guitar. I mentioned before that the depth of Patty's singing seems to be greatest when the music is sparse & the performance is more dependent on her voice. I noticed the same thing in Billie's songs. I'm a lazy guy , & if I were in charge of a new album , I would do it the easy way. Record the live appearances , & pick the masterpieces up as they fall from the tree. When my Media Player went to a web site to get info on a CD that didn't contain it , it showed a figure of 323 items by Billie.I went to CDnow , & they listed over 200 items. More interesting was that Billie died in 1959 , & there were no releases of hers between 1958 & 1979. Then again between 1979 & 1991. Since then she's had 85 , 23 in 2001 alone. There must be thousands of songs scattered thru her body of work. The cream always rises. Billie's did & Patty's will. As I was finishing , I recalled having a few cassette tapes of her , & checked them out. Most of the first 2 were duplicates , but the 3rd one , "The Billie Holiday Story" had about 10 songs that weren't on any of the 16 CDs , & at least 1/2 of them were among her best work , so I put it on a separate CD. I think it's the best of the 19 , & went to order it , but it wasn't one of the more than 200 that CD now has available for sale on their site. I got the 16 CDs down to 9 , & made a single compilation of my favorites. It would have been less , but I copied many alternate versions that I couldn't make quick decisions on. After I listen to them a few times I'll probably get them down to 4 or 5. I said a number of times , that I never owned a bootleg , or was interested in owning a bootleg , until Patty Griffin came along , but I'm glad that there are many versions of Billie's songs that I can choose from , as with Patty. I mentioned once that she did an upbeat version of "My Man" that I found wanting , & said that I thought Barbra Streisand's superior. Well , she has a few versions that matches Barbra's. The only song she does that doesn't reach the level of someone else's version is , "I Loves You , Porgy" by Nina Simone , which I finally , & happily found on CDnow today. I had been looking for the original version by Nina for a long time , but could only find 2nd rate live versions. I hadn't thought of it in previous visits to CDnow. Nina's also seen a resurgence of interest , with most of her releases coming cince 1998. Was hoping to find the original version of her "Trouble in Mind" too , but no luck , only 2nd rate live versions there. Those 2 songs are what put her in the rarified air of Billie & Patty's music. Patty's going to be a big seller in 2050 ! Thanks to anyone who had the time & patience to read this far. Peace & Music.
