I just turned around, smiled politely, and made to be listening to their conversation. Ready, if asked, to say "Hey, I paid #18 to hear your conversation -- I wouldn't miss a word!". Luckily, it didn't come to that. Luckily for me, that is. Rod Picott -- yep, alan, I think you mentioned him to me, and he just played the 12-Bar Club last night. To my eternal shame, although I was meeting someone in the cafe there, I forgot to pick up a cd(I believe they were selling them there), and having just seen Helen Watson there the night before (good gig, by the way) couldn't handle another late night. I have the bumpf from the 12-Bar Club in front of me, though, and it says he's "built a reputation as one of the best of Music City's young singer-songwriters. His debut album, 'Tiger Tom Dixon's Blues' features narrative story-telling delivered with grit and elegance, from laments to lost love to down and dirty, defiant rock and roll. His smoky delivery and gift for storytelling has drawn comparisons to Tom Waits, Steve Earle and John Hiatt." sounds good. BTW, when the list was throwing out Patty-like artists, I can't remember if anyone mentioned her, but I just got Oh Susannah's "Sleepy Little Sailor", and it's VERY Patty- like, kind of after-hours Patty -- smokey and evocative. adam k. I was at Fibbers in York (UK) last night to see my friends band, and they're advertising Thea Gilmore on Thursday 21st February. (#7/8) I was just wondering if any of you have seen/heard her and like her. "Rain" and "Chief" are both fantastic, but "Makin' Pies" literally made me cry. I'm serious. The weepy accordion and the snare brushes shuffling along like tired feet... I was at my desk, eat my little BBQ chicken breast I brought from home in a tupperware, and all of a sudden I just lost it. It's just the most profoundly depressing and profoundly true thing I've heard in a long long time. LOVE IT. On a happier note, I don't think anyone's posted that you can hear Patty's track (a clip) - as well as all the others - from "Evengeline Made" at the Vanguard site: http://www.vanguardrecords.com/evangelinemade/ - -Corey in Mo-lympic Town USA ******* ******* ** "El teatro es la poesma que se levanta ** ** del libro y se hace humana." ** ** ** ** "Theatre is the poetry which rises ** ** from the page and is made human." ** ** ** ** --Federico Garcma Lorca ** ******* ******* _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2002 16:24:05 -0500 From: "Gary Jacques" Subject: [none] Rain...The opening is as haunting as anything on LWG. I can tell it's great because it makes me want to kill myself. LOL You know what I mean. Chief...What comes to mind. Acrostic Cafe with a little Irish Pub thrown in. Yes, until a little further in when you here a tiny bit of Cajon influence then back to the Pub. Fabulous Babs! Making Pies...OK, I guess at this point I have to confess that I have heard Patty do this several times. And, oh boy, I've never been a big fan of this song. However! I may have to change my mind. The recording is very well produced and I'm coming around. The thing I like best is the Cowboy Junkie sound in the background. And of course the best singer ever in the frontground. Is anyone else having problems playing the songs?? I even tried reinstalling the latest version of Windows Media Player, but no luck!
