I wasn't aware previously, but this is the third year that the VVAF (Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation) has presented the series "Concert for a Landmine Free World". If you can swing one of the dates, absolutely go -- a much needed organization (ticket price all goes to the charity), and a fantastic evening of music. It was a round-robin format featuring Emmylou Harris, Mary Chapin Carpenter (w/ John Jennings), Bruce Cockburn, Steve Earle, Patty Griffin, and Nanci Griffith (w/ James Hooker). You don't often get much more talent on one stage at a time! Remaining dates are: Monday Dec 3 -- Detroit, MI @ State Theater Tuesday Dec 4 -- Cleveland, OH @ Playhouse Square's Allen Theater Wednesday Dec 5 -- Pittsburgh, PA @ Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall Thursday Dec 6 -- Glenside, PA @ The Keswick Theater Friday Dec 7 -- New York, NY @ The Beacon Theatre Sunday Dec 9 -- Alexandria, VA @ The Birchmere Set list follows for anyone interested... Emmylou -- Red Dirt Girl Patty -- Truth #2 Steve -- Valentine's Day Nanci -- Clock Without Hands Chapin -- Come On Come On Bruce -- (?) "Justice done on somebody else..." Emmylou -- My Baby Needs a Shepherd Patty -- Top of the World (wow) Steve -- Hometown Blues INTERMISSION Nanci -- Traveling Through This Part of You Chapin -- Bells are Ringing (from "And So This Is Christmas", 1999) Bruce -- My Beat Emmylou -- The Pearl (stunning) Patty -- Ten Million Miles Steve -- Goodbye Nanci -- It's a Hard Life Chapin -- Late for Your Life Bruce -- Mines of Mozambique Steve & ALL -- Christmas In Washington (Come Back Woody Guthrie...) I saw her last year when she came to Sheffield, England and immediately got hooked. She'd fitted in a gig between her support of Emmy Lou Harris. She was on her own but filled the room. I was surprised to find she had quite a following with people coming from 100 miles away - a long way in the UK :0)- just to see her. SDhe's also pretty popular on other lists I'm on. Anyhow on to my question. Tony is obviously about a lonely boy, but the subtext seems to be the writer's loneliness and dislike of school. Has Patty talked about the lyrics for this song? linda Buy the perfect holiday gifts at Yahoo! By the way when I hear the word "Flame" I puke. LOL Just kidding. That said, I'm pumped for the concert on Thursday. Bruce Cockburn. Please, this guy is so f-ing good. Although, my guess is, he won't be playing "If I had a rocket Launcher", at a Landmine Free World concert. Damn. Steve Earle, who's song,"Christmas time in Washington", which they all play at the end, is genius! Emmy Lou, who the last time I saw her play, did nothing but stare at me in a most wanting way. I think Dave said she stared at him too, but he's delusional. It made it difficult to listen to the show. And then there is Patty Griffin. I think this is my 12th show? I wonder which Patty will show up? I've yet to see the same one twice. The mark of a great performer. The other two yaps can say home as far as I'm concerned. Mary Chapin Carpenter was at the Newport Folk Fest a couple years ago and I went to the back stage to watch Toshi Reagon. What a great move that was. If any of you get to see Toshi do so!! And now, all kidding aside, a very happy holiday season to everyone. We find ourselves a long way from peace this year. But hope springs eternal. Here's hoping for Peace and a Landmine Free World next year.
