Now that I've seen her live! I just saw Patty for the first time last night at the Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill, NC. What an awesome show! She was accompanied by a lone guitarist who I believe she introduced as Doug Lancio(can anyone confirm this?) who complimented her music perfectly.(except for the first number where the sound guy had the guitar mix out of whack) I'm a big, big fan of Living With Ghosts and at first listen to Flaming Red felt that the band mix somewhat overshadowed Patty's singing. The songwriting, however, is fantastic. At the show last night Patty did several numbers from LWG and FR as well as new material, but hearing the FR songs with the sparse accompaniment blew me away. With Patty's voice and lyrics right up in front, the songs sounded totally different. She performed the song Flaming Red and it was incredible. Sounded like it could have been from LWG II. Patty mentioned that she was having trouble getting CD's out but didn't go into any details. She did mention her next Cd would be called "Kisses From My Lips"(At least I think that's what she said.) It was evident from the crowd's requests for their favorite Patty songs that she had many fans at the show. She acknowledged this and said that she wished the record executives could see that there are people who like music by artists other than Brittany Spears!(not sure the term artist applies here at all.) I have the LFML CD set, but someone at the show mentioned that there is another recording from a Calvin College show. I would love to get my hands on this or any other recordings out there. If anyone could help me with this I would really appreciate it. Last night at the Cat's Cradle was also my first time seeing Patty, and she also exceeded every expectation I had. I had plans to write a nice review, but DuVal said everything I was going to. I think she said the name of the new record was going to be "A Thousand Kisses", though. I'm completely in awe. ~Steph ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Jul 2001 00:00:13 -0600 From: Jessica Byers Subject: MM: Re: male singer/songwriters Dave Carter http://www.daveandtracy.com Mark Erelli http://www.markerelli.com Peter Mulvey http://www.petermulvey.com Tom Catmull no web site yet you need to hear those guys. dave carter is the best songwriter i know of right now. - -jess - -- Jessica Byers 23373 Highway 93 North ~~~ http://www.blackfoot.net/~jess913/ Arlee, MT 59821 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Jul 2001 16:24:31 EDT From: Mooodeee@aol.com Subject: MM: Re: male singer-songwriters Oh and how could i forget!!! Okay, they were god-awful tan instead "obey-me" black, but they were lusciously almost thigh-high. If she was wearing fishnet stockings with those, I might have fainted. But I couldn't tell because you could fit Wonder Woman's invisible jet between me and the stage. And with my total lack of a memory, it could have been Emmylou wearing those boots. But I think it was Patty. And Emmylou's "One Big Love" doesn't sound as choppy live...probably because Patty Griffin is singing background and the whole second verse. Also, it said in the brochure that she's expecting Silver Bell to come out early next year. But that sounded to me like a statement of pure optimism. It also said that Patty Griffin likes designing jewelry. Does she have a line out that I don't know about? Ever since I stopped wearing all my earings and chains (every once in a while I get them back out and dust them off though), I stopped buying jewelry. But I might be willing to shell out some bucks for Patty Griffin originals. And the B-52s are gonna be at the Chastain next month (Aug 11). And Britney Spears is an artist, by the way. Later.
