Jessica knows much more about this stuff than I do.. but from I've learned it's MUCH more costly to promote a CD, get all the artwork done, distribution, send the artist on tour (w/band) than it probably was for Patty to record the entire CD with a relatively unknown producer such as her friend Jay Joyce. They are more willing to eat the cost of the original production than send her in to re-do certain parts and then do all the above mentioned things. Bret Alexander from The Badlees (a band she used to open for) is a brilliant producer/songwriter/guitarist, and has just started his own record label as well as owning his own studio. I know he LOVES Patty's music. He produced an INCREDIBLE local artist and fellow MM'er Darcie Miner, as well as his own bands and many other musicians. Hmm.. (sorry, just thinking of possibilities in my head) .... maybe Patty should sign on with him?? Dave-- Patty G Rocks! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Jun 2001 17:58:22 -0700 From: "Elena" Subject: MM: Re: RE: Silver Bell stuff.. My assumption is that it's exponentially more expensive to market an album (and the artist who created the album) than it is to produce or make one. I would assume that the actual cost to the record company of making an album like Silver Bell is somewhere around $20-30k (I think I've heard this number thrown around before). I can't imagine the cost of Distributing, Packaging, Advertising and Publicizing an album and the artist, not to mention how much it must cost to get some airplay for the chosen singles (remember that article about radio station payola?) In this case I can see how if a record company is convinced that an album won't sell, there's no way they're going to pony up dough that the "marketing research" doesn't stand behind. What boggles my mind is the fact that this is a business that is completely run by marketing /crap/. It frustrates me to no end to see that an industry that makes money exclusively by selling a crappy product in a brilliant way doesn't feel that it's able to sell a brilliant product. "Marketing Research" is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Produce crap, play it over and over again until the masses start to "like" it, then ask them what they like, produce more crap based on this completely influenced feedback, repeat ad nauseum. That's my theory anyhow. - --Elena Who is completely deflated and depressed thinking about what these music industry morons are doing to her hero... - ----- Original Message ----- From: Sandi Campbell To: ; Sent: Monday, June 04, 2001 4:48 PM Subject: MM: RE: Silver Bell stuff.. > OK, so maybe it's my naive understanding of the music industry (I don't know > anything about it), but everyone keeps saying it's all about the money - > which I understand but don't agree with, especially as a Patty fan. After clicking on the artwork link, it should automatically download into your Adobe Acrobat program (in my case, I have Acrobat Reader 4.0. I believe this is the latest version). You will notice at the bottom left of your screen, the image is currently set at 72%. You must change this to 100% before printing. Caution: You will also have to change your print option to landscape in order to rotate the postition of the front cover. You want to make sure it prints the long way, top to bottom. The front cover is double size and folds in half. This adjustment will vary depending on you printers software, etc. Take care, Bob In a message dated 6/4/01 8:28:41 PM Eastern Daylight Time, adamk@zoom.co.uk writes: << Earlier, someone mentioned problems with the size of the LFML artwork. I can imagine it really taking off. It would also make a great video. What is the matter with them? I hope she can still put this awesome song out for others to hear. I think she should do it herself or maybe another artist, as has been suggested, might do it- c'mon Patty- find someone. How about Jackson Browne, he has produced before . Do it yourself- go on tour all over the place in little places then if you have to and sell them at the shows like lots of other artists do. I asked the Freight & Salvage here in Berkeley to book her and the man who does it thinks that she would not do such a small venue anymore- only about 100- that is still 100 people who might buy- 1-2- or 3 CDs! I still have hope that she will figure this out- I think she loves being in concert and she is a prolific writer- not going to quit any time soon. No one can do her songs like she can and once people turn onto her, they really get into her- so many don't even know her name when I mention her tho. I keep sharing her music whenever I can find a willing victim- and most have loved her music. There has to be a way thru this. Dana in Berkeley PS- Dave, I hope I never get you mad at me! You used to be so sweet. I guess you can hold your own in a fight! ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V5 #132 *********************************
