Rob died yesterday in a Pittsburgh hospital of liver failure. He co-wrote many of their songs including These Are Days, What's the Matter Here and Hey Jack Kerouac among many more. Living in Buffalo most of my life, I've had the pleasure of seeing the Maniacs many times over the years (with and without Natalie Merchant).. Lots of screaming girls would go to see Natalie. But I always went to watch Rob. He didn't move around a lot - his stage presence was closer to Bill Wyman than David Lee Roth. But wow, could he play guitar! I think it's his guitar that gave the Maniacs their unique sound. Haunting and ominous are the only ways I can describe it. Listen to his work on songs like Eden or If You Intend or These Are Days. The early stuff is just wonderful. Anyway, I don't want to wax on too much about something non-Patty related. There's more on Rob in the attached story. http://www.cnn.com/2000/SHOWBIZ/Music/12/20/guitarist.dead.ap/index.html Leigh "You've gone away without saying saying 'good-bye.' 10,000 Maniacs ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Dec 2000 20:41:31 -0800 (PST) From: Ronda Subject: MM: NPC - Rob Buck Thank you for posting this; I hadn't heard. The Maniacs were the very first band I ever truly latched on to. Natalie never sounded quite as good after she left ... and I think Rob is the reason why. What a sad day.
