You would have been in your element , sitting in the pews of Finney Chapel as she gave another stunning performance from on high. She even apologized for preaching during her lead-in to "Not Alone" She said that the first time she turned on the TV at her hotels in Cleveland & Oberlin , there was something on about white supremacists or the holocaust. Then discussed how those & other people seem to think that theirs is the only valid point of view in the world , but she thinks there are millions of valid points of view , & there's room enough for all of them. As Mark said , (Thanks for posting the set list) she told us that she had a wicked cold. Her speaking voice seemed to be slightly affected , & she seemed to stay away from her low range more than usual , but surprisingly , her high , powerful notes were as strong as ever. "Little God" was to be the high point of the concert for me. She introduced it saying that the Chix fans didn't "roll with it" very well & she hoped that we would. After a enthusiastic response to it , she thanked us for "rolling with it" much better. As she often does , she made note of the fact that so much of her music is about death. Then she related a story that I've heard before. She was playing "Happy Hour" at a local establishment when an inebriated gentleman interrupted one of her songs to request "Pretty Woman" because he was with a pretty woman. She responded , "Oh no , we're dark & tragic around here". I don't recall the "dark & tragic" line from the time I heard it. She also said that she had seen Nina Simone perform recently , that she was in her 80's & needed to be helped to the piano. Then she said if Nina could perform under those conditions , that she could certainly go on with a cold. One thing I noticed that I think speaks volumes about Patty , is that her smile is never as bright as it is when she makes a mistake , which she did during "Flaming Red". FR , by the way , was also a high point. The bluesy opening was as good as I've ever heard. Very sultry & intense. I didn't catch the name of the opening act , & it wasn't on the ticket. She was apparently a local favorite , as she got a great response when she was introduced. She only performed 4 songs , but I feel compelled to mention that she did a jazzy , Sade-like version of "Tupelo Honey" with just a bass accompanying her , that was outstanding. She said that she was honored to be opening for her idol , Patty Griffin , & that the hardest thing for her to do was to find 4 non-Patty songs to perform. Now , that I won't be going to the UK , & Patty has nothing else scheduled yet , I don't know what I'm going to do with myself. Maybe I should get a life , huh ? How about starting a new , grass-roots political party based on music being the most important issue facing the American people , with Patty as our first candidate ? I was disappointed that in all of the names mentioned as favorite female singers , some of my favorites were not included. Natalie Merchant , Chrissie Hynde, Paula Cole , & , if you want to get retro , Carole King , Janis Joplin , & the Wilson sisters from Heart. Very retro , Billie Holiday. Later. Trouble in mind , I'm blue But I won't be blue always 'cause the sun's gonna' shine In my back door someday R. M. Jones "Trouble in Mind" Performed by Nina Simone Don PS , I think I'll bore everyone with a complete list my favorite female singers in approximate order. Thanks so much for mentioning them. I heard them once and I had to hear more. Something in my mind tells me that Alison Krauss is their producer. I think I saw that somewhere. She's another good one to check out. I notice a lot of similarity between her voice and Sarah's, from Nickel Creek. I'm so glad that someone else knows who my favorite musicians are. First Patty now Nickel Creek. Can't find that anywhere around here. :) ~Eryn - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nancy Micciulla" To: Sent: Monday, November 06, 2000 2:23 PM Subject: MM: a few of my faves > hey everyone. . .it's been a while since i've posted, but i thought i'd put > my list of faves up, even though most of them have already been mentioned. . > . > > indigo girls > patty (duh) > tori amos > ani difranco > chantal kreviazuk > dar williams > aimee mann > dido > darcie miner > loreena mckennit > joni mitchell > sheryl crow > pat benatar!!! I've noticed everyone posting their favorite artists and I'd like to add a name. Has anyone ever heard of Carrie Akre?? She used to play in the band Hammerbox. After Hammerbox she was a member of Goodness. Now, she is just doing solo stuff and a side project with Mike McReady of Pearl Jam called The Rockfords. She started her own record label here in Seattle called Goodink Records. Basically she is a ROOLER...So, if anyone out there on this list lives in the Seattle area I HIGHLY reccomend going out to see one of her shows. She plays all the time around seattle and Portland. She also just put out a solo album called "Home" The cd is pretty good, but I think it makes it better if you have seen her live. See ya, Aubrey Oh, also check out Kim Virant you can download songs from both artists at mp3.com and on Napster ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Nov 2000 21:03:19 -0500 From: "Gary Jacques" Subject: [none] Please read this, since none of you know dooty. The misconceptions of latin bass?????????????????? Hey, what the hell's goin on here? Okay, my fav women artists are... blah blah blah blah. Everything already mentioned. Okay, I've drunken a few Martinis. however, they were stirred...not shaken cuz the gin bruises too easily. Thank God for stirring. The alcohol gods know that you're a poser if you SHAKE the gin. How brutal. hey, no one siad Aretha. She's da bomb. She smells like...flowers. Or Julie London. What a voice. She's got a voice you could suck on. And (already mentiioned)...Karen Carpenter. Smoove like buttah. Alright. Everyone's gotta favorite artist (mine's not particularly Tori Amos or that other chick....uh,.........................I can't remember. that "christians and the pagans" chick. but whatever). Okay, now that I'm here drunk and my balls are out....can someone tell me what the point of set lists are? I'm really curious. I've been on this list for like two years and I don't have a clue what people acutallly do with those set lists. Well, I know what I PERSONALLY do with them. I get drunk. But it doesn't take a setlist for that one. But right now I'm looking at my watch. What time is it? it's booty time. gin is such a delicate yet beautiful flavor. Why can't life be more like gin? Oaky, time to pass out. Or maybe I'll go to the bars now and get my fill. decisions descionsn.s wakka wakka wakka, paulster **************************************** * There is NO way you came from my * * sperm.
