["Paul Russell" Subject: MM: Greensburg show MMers , Hot off the press. Just got back from the Greensburg show , a mere 40 miles away. Set list: Poor Man's House Perfect White Girls Moses Silver Bell Sweet Lorraine Truth # 2 Top of the World Mary encore Tomorrow Night Yes , an opening act encore. I was surprised & delighted. Again , Patty was well received by the crowd. Judging by the shouts & whistles , she had a good number of her fans in the audience. Six of the songs were the same as her Sedona set , & I have the same comments about "Truth # 2" & "Top of the World" as I had in the Sedona review. "Top of the World" vocals are a notch higher when she does it solo , & the hook in "Truth # 2" isn't as prominent as usual. I've mentioned before that she dropped the "kiss their asses" line from "Perfect White Girls" , & mentioned that in Winnipeg , the song seemed so short that she may have eliminated other lines. I'm pretty sure that the line "I opened a tiny shutter & the sunshine blew me away" wasn't there. Then when she did "Sweet Lorraine" , the line "her father called her a slut & a whore" was missing , & I think a few others. I sure hope that the PC police don't change the way Patty makes wine. To my mind Patty's music has the power it does because it comes straight from the soul. The more her music & lyrics are homogenized by outside influences , the more likely it is that the detours will sap that strength. I hope I never hear , "go home to an empty apartment & call a best friend who's a dear" . Emmylou joined her for "Mary". When she was doing the "la la la " thing near the end , it added to the song , but not enough to make up for what she took away when she was doing the "Mary" thing. At one point , she motioned to some one to turn up her mike & I was thinking "you're too loud already". I was surprised when Patty said that Emmylou did "Mary" with her on "Flaming Red". I didn't know that. When I got home , I checked the liner , & there she was , listed for back up vocals. Buddy & Julie Miller , & the iodine Boys Choir are also listed. The fun part is that Max is listed as the background dog. Anyone know where he comes in at ? I don't want to keep spewing out the same superlatives , so I'll just say again that Patty's performance was at the high level I've come to expect from her. When Emmylou mentioned her , the first thing she said was that it was a treat to be on the same bill as Patty Griffin. High praise indeed ! Emmylou also said that , when they were doing the Land-mine benefit concert in California , that Patty did "Tomorrow Night" , & Bonnie Raight came over to her (Emmylou) & said that it was the best song she had ever heard anyone do anywhere. More high praise ! Patty did back up vocals & a little harmony on one number , but it didn't do anything for me. None of her back up work does. Patty's voice is always the focal point of her music for me. When Emmylou was 2 or 3 lines into "One Big Love" my daughter leaned over & said "she doesn't compare". I responded that "no one does , the funny thing is that she (Emmylou) has a great voice" . Emmylou also did "Wayfaring Stranger". I mentioned before that Natalie Merchant did it at a concert I attended , & that in spite of her great voice , her excellent rendition , & her talented band , that I would definitely prefer Patty & her guitar. I think that Emmylou did it with a touch of "Mariah Carey disease" . Stressing her vocal skills more than the straightforward delivery of the song. As far as I'm concerned Patty owns "Wayfaring Stranger" the same way that Judy Collins owns "Amazing Grace". In spite of my criticisms of Emmylou as they relate to Patty , she is an excellent singer with a great voice. She did a song that she said she wrote for (or to) her father , that I think was called "Bang the Drum Slowly" (also the name of an excellent movie with Robert de Niro) I remarked later that the song was definitely in Patty's league , composition-voice-performance. Emmylou also recorded a Beatles song called "Here , There , & Everywhere" , that continues to be a favorite. I got her "Elite Hotel" album just for that song.We didn't stay for the whole show because the early birds had to get to bed so they can get the worm tomorrow morning. I'm hoping to see the entire show in Philly on Sunday , because she got better as the evening progressed My daughter was a first time attendee at a Patty show. First comment after Patty's set.. Fantastic ! Sherie from Finleyville Pa , & the list , was also a first timer , as was her friend Erin. Sherie was already hooked on Patty's music , & now she may be hooked on Patty live. I think she might be joining us in Oberlin. One more special Patty fan. A few things I forgot to mention. Shades of "Living with Ghosts" .During one of Patty's songs , while she was just playing the guitar ,we heard a siren from outside. Patty smiled , & I think she said , "it's in the right key" . Emmylou did "Love Hurts" and used the line "love is like a stove , it burns you when it's hot" . Like a stove ? !!! Are you kidding me ? Buddy Miller , who was playing and doing vocals was right with her on that line. I had to look it up when I got home just to make sure. Love , Emmylou , is like a flame. I know this seems too short , : ) but I have to get the worm tomorrow. Until Monday. I would like to thank you for this continued medium in which Patty Griffin (and more) can be discussed. One thing I've been noticing, though, is that whenever I send a message to mad-mission@smoe.org there is a failure notice about delivery to one of the listees. That message goes a little like this (guitar please)... (sung to the tune of "The Final Countdown" by Europe) Warning, delivery failure! Holy cow! It has to be well over a month now since my last MM post. No guys, unfortuntely for you I haven't keeled over yet... I guess with the lack of Patty shows for me lately I have really had no reason to post.. until NOW that is. As Philly area MMer's well know, Patty will be gracing the stage at the oh-so-beautiful Keswisk Theater this Sunday evening. As you can tell, this is one of my very favorite venues in all the universe! .. right up there with the Tower Theatre and the TLA (both are also Philly area places).. it's no wonder I frequent this fine city so often. I can't wait to hear Patty's voice at this venue again! Ok, so here's my idea. There is a fine restaurant/bar (the Keswick Tavern) only a few blocks from the Keswick Theater. Last time Patty played here, Karla and I met up with Don and had a great time discussing everyone's favorite singer/songerwriter.. the Almighty Patty Jean Griffin! :-) I was thinking it would be nice if any MMer's who have the chance to go to the show a little early would meet up at the Tavern a few hours before show time. I would say my estimated time of arrival will be in the neighborhood of 5 o'clock Eastern standard time. (for those who will be embarking on a long journey, therefore crossing time zones) Don, Karla, Darcie, and myself will definitely be there... and it would be nice to chat with some other MMer's. Yes Evil Gary, even YOU. :-) (are you still out there?) Ok guys.. I look forward to seeing some of you this Sunday! GO Canes!
